What a disappointment!!! 3/15/2009

The service wasn't the greatest and the prices were terrible. I can't see spending twice what I should for something like kitchen cleaner and laundry soap. Even the toilet paper and paper towels were too much. I can get better deals on all these things at Wal-Mart!! more

Great Store 5/8/2008

I love this store. They have every plumbing thing I will ever need, even down to 1/8" threaded steel. Who has that anyways? Augh, I can't remember his name, but the guy who works at the White Center plumbing department is awesome. I've gone in there 5 times on random assignments this past year, and the guy even recognized me and said hi! "What you doing this time?" The plumbing fittings even cost less than HD a lot of times. This store may not have everything, but their plumbing selection is first class. They even have steel nipples up to 6" sometimes. That is dedication. more

Consumer Stumped 11/9/2007

I bought a ton heating pellets (only source of heat) from McLendons. I paid right then. Went out back to pick up, they said " You don't have take them all now. You can pick up as need them. I thought, Nice, they'll stay nice and dry. I went back the 3rd time, they didn't have them. We'll have them next week. Next week " We'll call you " After the tried time, I was confused " I already bought them" ! It wasn't the point of getting my money back and paying more for what i already paid for, It's the point I paid for something, hey offered to store them (not telling me they could sell them twice). But still they haven't called me once, to fill their obligation to me. I probably took it harder, because they're the family, we care store. But to not ever try to resolve the issue. Not a second thought. Only sort of heat, newly limited income, disabled. I was very put out. How would you resolve this issue? Marie Grubb 27407-144th ave se Kent, Wa. 98042 253-709-6676 more

Home Depot and McLendon both have strenths and weeknesses. 8/10/2007

If you have no knowledge of wiring, plumbing, or home improvement in general, and you are intimidated by the giant warehouse type stores, then you may get better service for very basic issues at McLendon (with Home Depot the secret is to find the person who actually manages that department... if you can). But if you know what you are doing and are shopping based on selection and price, then Lowe's or Home Depot is usually the better option. That's why they have displaced the traditional hardware store. People have a tendency to romanticize what they perceive as "Mom and Pop" stores. They nostalgically want to believe local stores are better then the evil big chains. While I have no love for the big guys and like the idea of a local store, I have been consistently disappointed with the level of service/knowledge/selection at the White Center McLenden Hardware. The selection is not great, the store is crowded because the isles are small, and the parking situation is just awful. While the staff is more plentiful then the big box stores, they do seem unmotivated, and they are not terribly more knowledgeable (they may know the difference between a hex key and a pipe wrench, but are not a great help). more

I love McLendon's Hardware 5/25/2007

I have chosen McLendon's as an alternative to Home Depot (which is closer to my home) simply because the folks who work there are available, knowledgable, and helpful. Recently I was in there because I was refinishing a table given to me by my grandma and wanted to do it well. The man working in that department was EXCELLENT- knowledgable, and gave me information based on EXPERIENCE- something Home Depot seems to be lacking. more

I really WANT to like this store but I can't........... 4/2/2007

McClendon's would seem to be a great alternative to Home Depot or Lowes but the customer service is worse than bad......it seems that the people here go out of their way to avoid eye contact or so they don't have to answer a question or tell where to find something. If you do manage to "capture" someone long enough to get some help they do the minimum to answer your question and at the same time act like you are imposing on their important time. It reminds me of going to the dept. of licensing or some other government agency where there public must go there are the worker cannot be fired and are not only untrained in manners and customer service, but seem to have the impression that there job is to act gruff and displeased that a customer dares to speak to them or interrupt their day. I understand that this is retail, and you may have to scrape the bottom of the barrel to get workers, but why cant they at least insist on simple politeness to the customers that keep their store open? Another thing that I have encountered numerous times at this store is the employees standing around in a group talking and they don't even stop when you approach and stand there!! You have to actually interrupt a conversation to ask where to find something! Unbelievable. By the way, these comment are about the Renton store, but I have also found the same thing at the Kent store. more

Plumbing 3/20/2007

Not as helpful as one would hope, "we don't have any in stock right now, alrighty? bye" and a hang up... didn't even get a chance to ask if he would know an other avenue to get the product I'm looking for. Believe it or not I actually had better help at Home Depot or Lowes... which is on the bottom end of customer service. Thanks for nothing McLendon ... more

Service and real live checkers! 12/12/2005

If you need a home product that works and does not need to be returned, this is your place. Unlike the big box stores, you get service, quality parts, and a boat load of checkers to get you out of there quick as a wink! Except for Saturdays, when the lines are long. I saw six checkers in a store 1/4 the size of Homer Despot! more

Great little store for all of your needs. 10/3/2005

While part of me happy that they moved Home Depot to SW seattle, a part of me was sad because of the business it will likely take from McLendon Hardware. McLendons has been in White Center for many years and while its not quite a Mom and Pops hardware store it has all the charm of one. They carry just about everything under the sun and I always try there before I go to HD. more

The feel of a neighborhood hardware store... 8/19/2005

I enjoy shopping at McClendon's. It makes me feel like I did 20 years ago when I was a little kid. It definitely has an old school vibe to it that you don't get when shopping at the Big Box Stores like you know who. The employees at McClendon's all seem to know what they're talking about, they help you find what you need, and they seem to enjoy being there. McClendon's is a pretty big store but the amount of stuff they sell there makes it seem much bigger. You can pretty much find anything there that you need. Another thing is the price. I've found their prices the exact same as Home Depot and sometimes I've found them cheaper. I bought pressure treated fence board at McClendon's for about 30 cents cheaper per piece than Lowes or Home Depot. Pretty big difference! more

McClendons Hardware 8/17/2005

McClendons is an old fashoned hardware store for a modern time. They've managed to stay up to date with their products and technology while maintaining the old fashoned goodness of employees who actually know what they're talking about. They really understand what is needed to keep a house running and make sure that every size and style of every important piece are in stock. They are a locally owned hardware store that was started in Renton, and now have a couple of stores in the Seattle area. They have better selection than either Home Depot or Lowes, and also way better help. Highly recommended more

A great neighborhood Hardware Store 6/12/2005

Youd be surprised at all that in compacted within this place. I often go in looking for one thing and come out with a bunch of items! Their prices are very competitive and the selection is surprisingly good for such a small operation. They have a lumberyard, a plant/garden section, plumbing, paint, lighting, and so on! Its like a mini- Home Depot! Go check them out! You wont regret! more

Great for old homes 5/5/2005

If you live in an old house or building this is the place to go. Little known parts and accessories can be found at McLendon Hardware and the staff has the knowledge to match. I was able to find a door handle spindle here for a 1928 building. Door handles are not made with spindles anymore. At Home Depot I had to explain what it was to the staff. The slight downside is the overall selection doesn't compare to Lowes or Home Depot. more
