Best

The food was great, the service was very attentive, the view and atmosphere was lovely. I had a great time in Manhattan Beach mostly due to dinner I had.

Worst

But, now it's the other way around. I cannot fault the wait staff at all. The cuisine on the other hand, was bland, and so... not Italian. When I go to an Italian restaurant, I...

Great Place 11/9/2011

This is a very cute and cozy place to come enjoy your evenings. Food and service was great. Depending on what you order and how much you drink it may get a little pricey, but worth every penny. Pastas and Martinis are great!!! And make sure you order the chocolate souffle for dessert !!! Highly recommend this plc. more

It used to be good food, bad service. 9/2/2010

But, now it's the other way around. I cannot fault the wait staff at all. The cuisine on the other hand, was bland, and so... not Italian. When I go to an Italian restaurant, I want it to remind me of when I went to Italy, and the food. I know most people can tell the difference....So sad what u pay for... more

Doesn't look so great from the window, BUT 7/27/2009

Doesn't look like anything special from the street, but tunneling to the cozy back tables of the restaurant, with delightful service and a nice menu, added up to a VERY pleasant evening. I have lived in Manhattan Beach for 37 years, and could smac* myself upside the head for not trying it sooner. Pros: Very good menu, ambience and service Cons: Not free more

Ignore the other posts...the food is exquisit as is the service 10/27/2007

Wonderful wonderful wonderful. Everything prepared with the utmost skill and expertise. The service was slower than I car for, but thank goodness it was as they did not rush you through your meal. Everything was fused together perfectly and no taste overpowered another. Highly Recomended. Pros: High Level of Culinary skills Cons: Parking more

Poor Food but very polite and courteous servers, bartender and waitress. 9/26/2007

My girlfriend's birthday was yesterday, she picked Mangiamo as her restaurant of choice for the evening. The two of us arrived early to enjoy a glass of wine on me before a few more of our friends arrived for dinner. The Bartender was super nice and attentive, we enjoyed a reasonably priced glass of Joel Gott Syrah, it was really good and the bartender gave us a great ""pour"". We were both a bit hungry and had an hour before dinner reservations thus we orderd the lobster ravioli appetizer, as they had no cheese plate or antipasti type of starters. The lobster ravioli was oily flat and very very bland. Little did I know that oily, flat and bland would be the theme of my dining experience at Mangiamo. \r We sat down for dinner and I ordered the ceasar salad to start and then chose the penne pasta with grilled chicken and sun dried tomatoes etc. The ceasar salad was on par with what you would order in a mall food court and the pasta dish was equal to what I had on my last flight from LA to New York. The meal was just plain ""bad"". My friends all seemed to have fared better than I, my friend Curt ordered the braised beef that tasted pretty good, (he shared a nibble), the birthday girl ordered the spinach and mushroom salad and had the tuna tar tar as an entree, (did not resemble even a semblance of Italian). My friend donna orderd some sort of fish with risotto which was equally disppointing. Even the desert was a let down, strawberry short cake that did not taste home made and a sugary syrup masquerading as strawberry something or other. The best part of the meal was the hostess ( a very pretty) woman who took delightful care of our group. Pros: great service from the bartender and hostess Cons: food was inedible more

Romantic restaurant with an Oceanside View 5/21/2007

Mangiamo Restaurante and Bar is nestled comfortably in the Downtown section of Manhattan Beach, located just off the ocean. Perfect for a romantic dinner date, this restaurant offers an array of steaks, salads, and pastas--and the wine list is even more varied. Be sure to get there early--parking tends to be tricky during the evening hours. Pros: Perfect for a romantic date Cons: Parking--the nearby public parking lot tends to get congested during the evening more

Unique romantic dinner spot in Manhattan Beach 3/1/2007

After walking up and down the street, we decided upon Mangiamo's for dinner. First off, they carry my favorite gin - Hendricks - and the crowd was trendy. The greens were good (they serve a peppery salad), and teh swordfish that evening was outstanding. Creme brulee for desert was thick and mixed with ripe blueberries. We went on a weekeday but I imagine it's quite crowded on weekends. Pros: fish, wine, ambience, service, location more

Very romantic 12/23/2006

I went here a few months after passing by it so many times. This restaurant is one of my preferred restaurants in the South Bay I don't remember the food being anything spectacular, the restaurant is a bit small and loud but it's really romantic which I really liked-good date spot. more

Pause 5/19/2005

Mangiamo is a lovely upscale dining experience. The food is delicious and they have a great variety of menu items. Dessert ladies? Anything with chocolate (cake or souffle) ala mode is heaven. Service is good but will someone please tell them to pause when coming to your table? There's nothing worse than today's wait-staff eager to butt-into your conversations to mention today's specials. Stop being so rude! more

This is NOT an Italian restaurant 5/16/2005

It may have an Italian name, but it is definately NOT an Italian restaurant. Anyone can serve pasta, but to be an Italian restaurant you need to serve pizza, and more then one kind of pasta. Your food needs to be RED WHITE AND GREEN just like the flag. This is an expensive steakhouse with an Italian name. If you want Italian food, go elsewhere. If you are upper class white people who think they know Italian food, this is yoru place. If you want a steak and to possibly see a star, this is your place. Pros: Great filet steak, You can see stars Cons: No pizza, No "Italian" food, Price more

Wonderful Manhattan Beach Dining 1/21/2005

The scallops are plump and flavorful, the veal - succulent and tender... We had a large group and everyone enjoyed their meal, the wine, the service... The whole evening was perfect! Pros: romantic, food, location more

Exceptional Taste & Service 9/12/2004

The food is excellent! There is a wide choice of seafood/italian at a moderate price. I had the crab cakes, which came served with mixed greens in a sweet vinagrette and herbed risotto. My friend ordered the shrimp risotto which was superb as well. The service was very attentive, even when the restaurant became more and more packed. We had a party of 15 and they treated us graciously despite our size. The atmosphere is intimate and above average. Would definitely come again! Pros: Service, Food, Location more

must try!!! 6/25/2004

it was great that we didn't have to wait for a table since we went for an early bird dinner last nite. all the staff in the restaurant are curteous and friendly. our waitress made some great suggestion on my food choices, and they came out perfect in every way. i had the Charlie Halibut, which Charlie (not the inventor thou) actually brought me my dish... =) Mangiamo offers delicious dishes from the beginning (appertizers) to the end (dessert). this is a definitely must try and must re-visit. Pros: delicious food, friendly service, quiet romantic settin Cons: , might get expensive more

Scrumptious Surprise 9/22/2003

We brought our own bottle of Syrah intended for a special occaision and found the $18 corkage fee a bit high. The escargot was amazing with a perfect texture- not too chewy- in a lemon butter pesto sauce. The service was appropriately attentive, as well as sincere and educational. The entrees of Lamb Osso Bucco and Three Mushroom Farfalle were delivered in a timely fashion without rushing. The pasta was perfectly cooked with a brown butter and wine sauce accompanied by a variety of plump, full-bodied mushrooms. Saving the best for last, the savory flavors of the Osso Bucco penetrated the thin fatty-layer of meat just perfectly allowing it to fall right off of the bone. The polenta with fresh baby carrots. diced tomatoes and spinach made for delicious accompaniments to dinner. Bottom Line: A great value for an amazing meal for any occaision. Pros: True Italian, Great Value, Inviting Ambiance more
