Worst place to go to. WARNING 10/9/2010

Terrible place. The owner seems friendly and nice until he tries to take extra money from you. We had called him up a group of over 20 and were basically make reservations so we dont end up going there and have no room. We were assured it would be fine. When we showed up there he wanted to collect 15$ per person at the door AND ONTOP OF THAT you still have to pay for everything..This was on a thursday night like its a club or something. Moreover, their ""dj"" (a kid playing itunes on his laptop) is a teenage nuisance always looking to cause trouble. That thursday night he started a massive brawl that over 40 people partook in. Terrible place to go to terrible owner terrible staff. My hispanic friends werent allowe in because the owner said ""I dont like that kind of crowd here"". So ontop of all this hes a racist owner too more

Terrible food and service with a smile 2/15/2010

My husband and I decided to try this place out for Valentines day and unfortunately we had not read all these terrible reviews I'm reading now. The place is a huge draw for the teenagers in Astoria because of the loud music and hookah which is fine though not what we were looking for. We decided to go with the vibe and try to enjoy our food. The lamb tagine and couscous got rave ratings in the few reviews I did read. I have to agree with previous reviews on this site, the meat was fine, except for the fact it was not lamb but beef, the food was flavorless and the plate was mostly filled with canned peas and potatoes, the couscous was the same, no flavor! The tagine according to the menu is supposed to come with rice, and when we questioned the waiter and chef they both denied that it should even though the menu cearly says so. The ""Moroccan"" bread that came with our meal was actually italian bread. Unfortunately, we had already ordered a hookah and the Moroccan tea before we discovered the terrible food, however, these two items were actually good, so we stayed and finished up and our bill still came out to 25 dollars with a 4 dollar gratuity they added themselves. Luckily there is a great Afghani place across the street and we were able to salvage our Valentines day dinner. Overall, this place was a complete and utter disappointment food wise, but if you're a teen and you like hookah check it out. Pros: morrocan tea, hookah Cons: really uncomfortable seating, terrible food more

As a former waitress...DON'T EAT HERE 12/2/2009

I worked as a waitress at Jour et Nuit a few years ago. The owner was kind enough to give me a job when I was in NYC for the summer which I was grateful for, but I quickly realized working here was a big mistake. The owner would purposely unplug the credit card machine and make me tell customers that it was broken and they'd have to use the ATM across the street. He would also make me add a service charge onto the bill when I knew the food wasn't good and the customers were unhappy. It put me in a very awkward situation. I never saw him mop the floors or clean the restaurant and we had to tap out the bread baskets on the sink ""in case there were cockroaches in them"" before putting the bread in to serve to the customers. The only thing I would eat from there is the french fries and the tea. How this place got a Zagat rating I will NEVER know. Not to mention the fact that he hardly ever paid me for my work, in fact he still owes me money but I'm NOT going back there to get it. Cons: way too many more

Not a good choice at all. 11/14/2009

To start it off, when we walked into the restaurant, we didn't even receive a menu! When one of the many waiters/servers we had that night approached us and asked us if we wanted drinks and hookah, we were left with just our drinks, waiting to be attended to. After we caught the waiter's attention and asked for menus, she replied with, ""Oh! I thought you guys just came in here for drinks!"" Ok, so that was number 1. Number 2, when my hubby and I ordered our food, which was lamb tagine and lamb kebab, we were thinking that it was going to come with rice and Moroccan bread, as stated on the menu, but it didn't. Instead, another waiter brought us our food along with one side of french fries and not Moroccan bread, but Italian bread. Hubby didn't even get fries! I called the waiter back and explained to him that the menu said our dishes come with rice, and he said that they had no more rice, then offering couscous or french fries in its place. I said that the couscous would do. So, he brought out couscous for me, but keep in mind that hubby never received his side. So, I called him back and told him that hubby's order was supposed to come with rice and he didn't receive anything in its place. He said, ""Well, the couscous was on the house, so we can't really give you another side of couscous."" Why not? The couscous was supposed to replace the rice that we didn't receive. Never again. Plus, they added a ""service charge"" of $6, which I'm guessing was because they knew they weren't great and wouldn't have received a tip from us. The music and setting were nice, until they started to develop technical difficulties with the CD and changed it to very loud, obnoxious rap music that totally didn't fit the theme at all. On a positive note, my lamb kebab was seasoned perfectly and the lamb in the tagine was very tender, (even though there were more peas, olives, and other additives in it to bulk up the lamb tagine than actual lamb). Pros: Food is seasoned very well. Cons: Too many to say in such a small box. more

Wowwwww! 11/3/2009

Great atmosphere, but terrible service, and owner always rips people off with money more

Tagine and Couscous 4/7/2009

Stick to the Tagine and Couscous and you are going to love this place. You can also try Sheesha but i am no hookah smoker. Pros: Awesome Tagine and Couscous Cons: Limited desserts on the menu more

Terrible, disgusting restaurant 2/18/2009

My husband and I went to this restuarant for Valentines day 2009. I have never been more turned off by food or service. Ever. Even in cheap restuarants in developing countries. more

yummy Moroccan food 6/1/2008

My husband and I absolutely loved this restaurant. We have many Moroccan friends and are no strangers to Moroccan food. We brought our family including our 2 year old niece. so there were 7 of us. We thought the food and service were great. Don't let the bland entryway fool you.. The decor inside was artsy and authentic. We'll definitely go back often. Cons: from the outside ..it doesn't look like anything special. more

Terrific, if you enjoy paying for terrible food and service 5/31/2008

O, where to begin? Pros: Friendly if inefficient waitstaff Cons: Everything else more

Very disrespectful to neighbors. 5/30/2008

This restaurant plays HORRIBLE music every friday and saturday night. I have been living in Astoria for 24 years and have never encountered an establishment that has absolutly NO REGARD for its neighbors. LOUD MUSIC FROM 12 AM to 3 AM?! It sounds like I have a live band in my living room, LITERALLY. Cons: HORRIBLE more

The worse place I have ever been too.... 5/12/2008

terrible terrible service..took the owner (the only waiter as well) 20 mins to bring a can to sprite to me..then..no glass, no ice. food sucked except for the french fries (which is very hard to mess up)... refused to have everyone order thier own dishes cuz it was ""too hard"" to feed 20 ppl...(plz keep in mind that there was only us and and another table that already had thier food) only gave us the option of buffet style and then there was barely enough food for everyone! the owner send guest home becuz they couldnt fit at our table. the place was empty!!! Pros: Seating Cons: Everything else more

The owner and service-both horrible! 5/12/2008

The owner was just plain mean and rude. I had my birthday dinner there, and he had a nasty attitude with my guests. I even reserved the place for 30 people, on making reservation he was all kool but then it was just about him getting the money. Pros: Nice place Cons: The owner. more

Perfect Birthday Treat! 5/11/2008

My dining companion offerred to treat me to ""any restaurant you want"" in Astoria for my birthday, probably thinking I'd chose our favorite. Instead, I chose a cuisine neither of us recall having tried before and we were very pleased! The food we chose was very flavorable but not overly spicey, very fresh, and had good portion sizes. The decor had us feeling we were on a mini-vacation - less than one mile from home! The service was attentive but not overbearing. The music added to the atmosphere. The prices were very reasonable. We would both definitely return. I asked about previous negative reviews on service and was told that it had to do with a prior waitress. We can't verify that but had no problem on our Sunday evening out. We were very happy and had a good time...a memorable birthday treat. Pros: Too many to list! Cons: none at our visit more

Excellent Moroccan place 4/19/2008

There was music and it was a very cozy atmosphere. The wine was reasonably priced and for the someone who never had Moroccan food before, the Kafta Brochette was great. It was a unique dish. The portions, price and service were great. The hookahs were fun as well. Pros: food, hookahs Cons: they should have reminded me to get a mint tea, totally forgot to do that more

Authentic food, friendly owner, HORRENDOUS service 3/9/2008

The food is authentic and excellent. The lamb tagine is excellent as is the fish tagine and roasted fish entree. They can improve on service though. We went on a Saturday night, and they didnt have 3 of their 5 appetizers available, weird. We will take the pate canard ""Dont have it"", ok the pate maison ""Dont have it"", ok the shrimp pastilla ""Dont have it"" Hmmm what do you have? ""Calamari, chicken pastilla, salad sampler"" Keep in mind this was a SATURDAY night! It took about 25 minutes for the waitress to take our orders, and we never got our water or anything like that. When we arrived there were 3 other tables, so its not like she was swamped. Looking back on it, she was apparently stoned (it became indisputable when she poured wine into someones beer!!!) The food is excellent, the belly dancer was good too. We finished our plates and waited literally about 30 minutes for the plates to be cleared...cmon. The hookahs are excellent too. The sheesha is fresh and they have a nice assortment of flavors. It also took the waitress another 20 minutes to calculate our tab. Definitely stoned. Pros: ambience, food, authentic grub Cons: service service service more

Warm and friendly server and host/chief, homey, Moroccan atmosphere and absolutely delicious food! 2/4/2008

We've always had the thought of finding a nice Moroccan resturant to experience on the back burner. But last night, we bought the ticket and took the ride to Astoria. In short order, we found a wonderful, warm and cozy place on Steinway Ave. Jour et Nuit is the name of the resturant. We we were greeted by a friendly host who showed us to a lovely, candle lit table. The floor is beautiful Moroccan tile and the walls are adorned with tapestries. We started things off with nice portions of salads - one called, Shakshouka, was a mix of roasted mixed peppers, tomatoes, marinated in herbs, spices, olive oil, and a light vinegar. The second was called Barba salad - a refreshing mix of chopped beets, herbs and spices in a tangy vinagrette. Next we had Chicken and Lamb Tagine and TFay Couscous. When they arrived, all were wonderfully aromatic and nicely plated. Everything was delicious and perfectly cooked. One of the best things though is that you also get excellent, home made bread to wisk around the plate and sop up all the juices - a little secret that the host and server told us about when the feast arrived. Anyway, Jour et Nuit serves up some fantastic, authentic Moroccan fare. Besure to visit when you are in Astoria. Ask for Michelle. She helped us to understand the cuisine and made us feel very much at home. more

Met Every Expectation 9/12/2007

I can't begin to say how great and authentic the cuisine is at this humble establishment. My wife and I spent time in Morocco recently, and have been on the hunt for a Real tagine and mint tea done properly. Well, we have found it. Bottom line, if you want to experience an authentic Moroccan meal, look no further. Make sure to order a Tagine as well as a few, if not All of the salads. The mint tea is a MUST! It's exactly the way they do it in Morocco. So what you waiting for??? p.s. parking in Astoria is usually a nightmare, so take the ol iron horse instead. Pros: authentic cuisine Cons: parking more

Authentic Moroccan food 7/11/2007

Jour et Nuit reflects a true sense of Moroccan food and presents a pleasant atmosphere. Both of which will encourage another visit. The place has a sense of simple life and basic good food with wonderful aromas and flavors. I would suggest they improve their wine offering with better prices as their basic bottles are offered at rather steep prices. But, when the meal is so reasonably priced, you can accommodate minor transgressions. Overall, if you live in Astoria you really should visit at least once. If you?re not from Astoria, it?s certainly worth stopping by. Pros: Food is great Cons: Wine is lacking more

My new Favourite 3/6/2007

I've had a lot of Morrocan food in my life, one of my best buddies is from Morroco and eating over at her place was always a delight. When I moved to New York, it was obvious it was going to be hard to find a restaurant with food as good as my friends mother could make it. Then I walked into 'Jour et Nuit'. Pros: Food, service Cons: location, little too far away for me more
