What was meant to be a celebration for a friend turned into THE WORST dining experience of my life by far. Our party called to make reservations and we were quoted a price of $35 per person by the owner/chef himself. We were informed that dinner would last about 3 hrs in reality it stretched on for over 6 hrs; 85 % of that time was spent waiting for our food to arrive. When the meal was finally served, we were starving and the food was mediocre and tasteless. Our party was informed that the price would be $45 per person instead of the quoted price only after we had been served. The over priced dessert was a stale store bought brownie with ice cream in a martini glass. The corking fee is a joke. At first, we weren't told about the fee and we uncorked our own wine with a cork screw we brought. We also had sparkling juice that we opened by hand. At the end of the night they tried to charge us for all the unopened bottles of wine, and the juice. The service was poor, the only time we really saw anyone was when they came in to count the wine bottles we had opened over the course of the night, and to occasionally bring us tap water in recycled wine bottles. Shabby, chic...I think not, just plain shabby. After tracking down someone on staff and much debate some of the charges were taken off which brought the total to about $1,020 plus a ridiculous tip they automatically added to the bill. To leave, we had to find the owner/chef to unlock the gate around the parking lot across the street where our cars were. We escaped the madhouse sometime after 1am and were made to pay a ransom just to leave. Our bad dining experience added up to be a little over $80 per person. When all was said and done, our bill was enough to pay the mortgage for a standard house in Houston. House in the Heights is considered to be a bad word in my circle of friends; we couldn't speak of this experience for months after it happened. The worst experience ever! I was in the restaurant industry for years and I am completely offend that someone would try to pass this off as dinning experience! Part of a dinning experience is to have good service which we did not, we had no service. Who is writing these good reviews are they just friends of the Chef's or what. And said friend is a very accomplished chef. Patrick greeted us at the door like we were old friends and showed us to our table. One thing Patrick stressed to us once we were seated is we were to dine, not eat out. There is a difference. Dining is an all evening affair, something to be savored slowly, not rushed. I would not make other plans for the night if you go to dine at the House in the Heights. It is a place to get comfortable and enjoy 4-5 hours with your loved ones and friends. Don't come here and expect to be in and out in an hour or two. That is not the point of coming here. Pros: Bring your own wine, comfortable environment more

My husband and I went with friends to House in the Heights twice, once years ago, and once in the new location. The first time was a nice, ordinary dining experience. The second time, though, was so bad we are still laughing it, and judging from some other reviews, it wasn't unique. We arrived at 7:30 and were the only patrons for the evening. The owner was serving, cooking and cleaning up himself with no other help. We waited over an hour to get our bread, then another hour for the first course. Talk about being held hostage! They said $45. It was $80 after all the additional fees. They charge extra for coffee and make you pay if you bring your own dessert, and charge for no-shows in your party. My food was tough and overcooked (and others in my party had complaints about the food). We got there at 7 and didn't escape until 11:30. Fairly disasterous, there was no one to welcome us at the door, and we had to search around the house with the other parties to find someone who knew where we were to be seated. Most of the employees had no knowledge of the reservation list in order to guide us to a table. Pros: Food, quirky Cons: Poor, EXTREMELY slow service more

What a GREAT night to dine, was enjoyable from start to finish! When we walked in we were greeted and lead to our own room, it seemed all the tables were in seperate rooms but they were open to one another. What INCREDIBLE bread they brought out to us, was fresh baked and told it didn't get baked until they knew we were sitting down. Why can't the other places do that??? All the courses were absolutely delicious, had Chicken layered with fire roasted tomatoes, apple smoked bacon and goat cheese. Can still taste it, they know how to do it!! Had something called Creme Brulee Martini with hot butterscotch for dessert. Gotta get back there SOON! more

I was forewarned that the dining was an ""experience"" here and to expect 2-3 hours minimum. We were a party of 6 and all showed up by 7:00. At 8:15, we finally received the bread, the soup and salad course followed shortly after. At 10:00 PM we were informed that there was a slight malfunction in the kitchen and the entree' would be served shortly, 10:25 we received uncooked Salmon, rubbery chicken and refrigerator-cold pork. It was one of the worst dining experiences of my life and to top it off the owner/chef never checked on us when he received untouched entrees in the kitchen, yet charged us full price with no apologies. Oh my GOD!!! What a rip-off! To start, the cost is $45.00 per person. What do you get for that? Tap water, bread that takes 45 minutes to get to your table!, cold dry chcken, soup out of a can and a bad attitude from an owner who drinks too much in the kitchen. Wait, did I say kitchen? I just recently was able to visit House in the Heights for a special dinner I had with a dear friend visiting town. We were both so impressed with the wonderful homemade bread with a delicious dipping olive oil. MMMMMMM. Too bad you can't buy this in Kroger! The restaurant is a remodeled old house with separate dining tables in each ""room"". We loved the way it was decorated with antiques and other eclectic items. So cute, cozy and comfy. Our server was actually the owner/chef of the house and was very friendly with us. He loved to explain exactly what our dishes were made of and how they were cooked. Every course was excellent. We were there for a few hours just enjoying each other's company, sharing our own wine we brought in and savoring each new food that was brought to us. We also took a lil tour of the house and got to see the other rooms , upstairs and ""backyard"" which has a cute garden area and deck. The lights around the back give it a very warm feeling. although it's tucked deep in the heights, it's truly a quaint houston gem! a romantic twist to a unique dining experience. the house decors are lovely, surreal, and antique-ish ... dimly-lit with soft music crooning in the background ... feels like dining in paris ... and the ambience feels personable, allowing for a couple to share a moment or 2. the one-man show of the brilliant chef also plays host and server - adding to the unique dining experience. the only complaint i have is that the whole dining experience is quite time consuming. it takes a good 30 minutes between courses because the chef makes everything from scratch and cooks everything on the spot ... my bf and i stayed from 7pm till almost midnite waiting for our fresh dishes! but if you have the time and want a memorable date ... definitely a must to try!* Pros: romantic, ambience, unique dining experience Cons: time consuming! more

I went here for a party. The food does take hours to arrive. There is a one person who prepares all the food and none of the ""waiters"" speak English. The food is not even good. My wife and I easily parked across the street from the restaurant which personally I prefer over the mandatory valet parking that most upscale restaurants impose. The personality and ambiance of the house and its decor were simply wonderful and which further proves the creativity of the chef/owner. We were promptly seated in our own private room. The lighting was by mostly candlelight for a very romantic effect. There was jazz playing in the background but I will attest it was the quietest restaurant I have ever dined in. I am a fan of BYOB establishments so we brought a couple bottles of champagne and wine which were immediately chilled by the most polite/attentive waitstaff. It is always special when the chef takes the time to explain in person what was on the menu for the day and to see how everything was throughout the evening. My wife and I had a most memorable and enjoyable evening at the reestaurant. Everything from the bread and dipping suace to the incredible desert was spectacular. The chef was amazingly attentive to our wishes and the food presentation was spectacular. A real treat and one we will revisit soon and frequently. more

WOW! Where can I start? An INCREDIBLE evening from beginning to end. What a WONDERFUL surprise to find a place in Houston where you are not rushed and made to feel at home! When my group and I arrived , we were greeted with a friendly and warm ""Welcome, make yourselves at home"" then shown to our table ( in our own room). Only to find a table that had every detail covered..from beautiful stemware...right down to the forks and knives. Next, the owner came in, introduced himself, then explained how everything is prepared fresh and informed me that our bread is not baked until we are here. 15 minutes later..and freshly baked homemade bread!! The loaf was bigger than my head.....AWESOME..AWESOME BREAD! I'd go back for the bread alone..nevermind the other 3 courses of Wonderful food! Had no room for dessert but had the Key Lime pie with something chocolate , still thinking about it!!! Everybody who likes going out with friends DEFINITELY should check this place out!
