Hashiguchi Japanese Restaurant

My husband and I have been going here for over 8 years. To us it was the best sushi we ever had anywhere.....NO LONGER. We will NEVER go back. Tonight was the straw that broke the camel's back. The last 4 or 5 times were not that good but we just excused it. Tonight was just downright insulting. First, they sat us way down at the end of the sushi bar in front of the case that had no fish in it....kinda strange but what can you expect from the owner? Anyone that knows him knows what I am talking about....he's only friendly when he's drunk. The soup and salad were good as usual but the waitress never picked up the used wash cloths that they always bring before dinner. Then we ordered a beer and she tells us they don't have that kind tonight but then mysteriously brings us one....once again very strange. The first plate of sushi was okay but not nearly as good as it used to be. Then our special rolls (Spicy Tuna and Negi Hamachi Maki) and nigiri (scallop and octopus) show up and was just totally f-ing disgusting. The Spicy Tuna was so spicy that it literally burnt our tongues....4 hrs later and they are still burnt. I don't know what in the hell the a-hole owner was trying to do but we will be contacting the health department. The Negi Hamachi Maki smelled like canned tuna and tasted even worse. We ate one piece each and left the rest there. I expect I will be sick tomorrow from that. Once again the health department WILL be contacted. My dad uses fresher fish for bait. I guess because we don't have slanted eyes he thinks he can pull this sh*t. The scallops were yellow instead of clear. They didn't make me want to puke but they sure as hell were not good. My husband said the octopus was acceptable. We have no idea why we were treated in such a rude and insulting manner but since apparently they don't want us back we will not go back ....EVER. more

This is definitely the best Sushi restaurant in town but I have noticed lately that the quality is not what it used to be. Since the economy turned bad, so did the sushi. They dont have the customers they used to and I think the fish is sitting around longer than it used to. They probably think that white people are too stupid to notice. I dont know. My favorite thing is the Spicy Tuna Roll and the Scallop Nigiri. I also love the yellowtail, snapper, flounder, and salmon nigiri but lately these taste very fishy. We used to go once a week but now it's only about once every couple of months. The owner is a grouch unless he is drinking. Sometimes we feel very uncomfortable sitting at the Sushi bar because he is so moody. more

I have been going to this restaurant for over 11 years. The quality of the food is the best I ever had. The only issue I have, is the owner. Masato does not stand behind his product. My wife ordered a chicken dish and it came out cold and hard. The owner had the nerve to blame me for the problem, claiming it was my fault that we should have consulted the waitress 1st about the dish. We DID consult her and I know when I am served old, well done, food. I can't stand foreigners who hide behind a cultural wall claiming differences when they have been here for over 20 years. I told Masato that he lost a valued customer, and I will inform all people I know not to eat at his establishment. In todays economy, how could anyone not take any responsibility for there product. All we wanted to do was reorder a new entree. He was forcing us to pay for the bad food. I paid and walked out. I feel very bad about this, however, I can't bring myself to go back. Not only is the sushi fantastic, but the experience of sitting @ the sushi bar and conversing with Chef Hashiguchi is full of laughter! The patrons are all extremely friendly and I think that it is due to Chef Hashiguchi, sipping sake and joking around with folks. Low key & excellent quality... and the price is right! I've been going to Hashiguchi for 16 years. The sushi is always very fresh and tasty, and the sushi bar is friendly and lively. The owner Masato is a masterful and creative sushi chef. The spicy tuna roll is the tastiest I've had anywhere. It's an authentic Japanese place without the glitz and pretense that you find in some of the newer sushi restaurants. They also have a fantastic and extensive lunch menu for around $8. The udon and soba noodles are incredibly deliciious and make a great lunch. The service is very friendly and attentive. Some of the same waitresses have been there as long as I have been going. They've probably been there longer because the restaurant has been there for 25 years. They are doing something right. more

My boyfriend and I visited Hashiguchi because of the excellent reviews, and the fact that it's Zagat rated. I've eaten sushi for years - in Detroit (my hometown), Boston, Miami, Chicago and San Diego. I love it; I can't get enough. And I especially love QUALITY sushi. Not just fried, American versions (although, this can be good if done well) of this Japanese food. The quality of the fish is very important to me, and that's what Hashiguchi has - quality fish. This isn't a pretentious place you go to be seen, although there seem to be many of these types of sushi places in Atlanta. But if you are looking for good quality fish at a decent price, this is the place to go. Every peice of ngiri was excellent. Many times, I go to get sushi, and find that while MOST of the fish is great, there are one or two pieces that just aren't good, or even bad. But all of the fish here was excellent - the tuna, the salmon, the yellowtail and the eel were all wonderful, flavorful and perfect. We'll be back again. I went to Hashiguchi with a large group last night. I ordered a yellowtail/scallion roll and an ""atlanta"" roll. One bite into the yellowtail, and I was stuck by a sizeable bone! Bravely I tried a second bite and got a second bone! I didn't finish my meal. Another member of our party also had a bone in her sushi. I don't claim to be a sushi expert, but I do know that there should not be any bones in my fish! I eat a good bit of sushi and can say this has NEVER happened to be before, even at the cheap joints. When I told the waitress, she just said ""oh, a bone? and that was it. It was not removed from my check until I told them to take it off. Cons: bones in your sushi! more

I can't say enough about how great Hashiguchi is. Simply the best sushi restaurant in Atlanta. The menu is traditional japanese only- no desserts and no americanized sushi rolls, but this is a good thing, because they stick to doing one thing and doing it right. The fish and shellfish quality is amazing, all super fresh and completely odorless. I would recommend any of their sashimi or nigiri, especially the outstanding amaebi- the fried shells are served alongside in the traditional manner. Try the seafood butter yaki too, it was great. My job allows me to associate with Japanese co-workers and customers frequently. I visit Japan about twice a year, and entertain visitors from Japan 6-10 times a year. Hashiguchi is my favorite place to take these visitors. They all comment about the high quality of the food and service and that it is the most authenic Japanese restaraunt they have ever eaten at outside of Japan. I don't know why, but these days there are so many Asian restaurants that serve everything, well, Asian. You've got a Thai place that serves Thai noodles, soups, entrees, then you see a whole section of the menu dedicated to Chinese dishes, then a whole section for sushi. It's great when you want a lot of choice and not necessarily quality, so I don't frequent these types of places much. Who the heck knew I would find a Zagat-rated, and well deserving of same, sushi restaurant in a strip mall? I almost couldn't find it. But what a find. The quality of the fish, preparation, presentation... everything about the food has been perfect across multiple dinnertime visits, prompting me to send my compliments to the chef each time. The waitstaff is attentive and observant. I have noted the older waitstaff coaching and guiding the younger ones to pick up cues from patrons. Staff dress is Japanese and traditional. They deserve a grand ""hurrah"" for providing a level of service that is difficult to find anywhere. The environment is quiet and respectful; this is not for noisemaking kids (including the adult kind). I would take a date or an executive there anytime. Favorite dish off the usual path-- the grilled, salted yellowtail cheek (appetizer), which is big enough to be dinner. Amazing, wonderful place. Pros: Beyond-excellent food, Beyond-excellent service. This place is amazing. Probably the freshest, best tasting sushi I have ever had. Very Authentic. Past review was right, I have been to a lot of sushi bars in Atlanta, but the clientele here is probably 50-60% asian, and like the other commenter said, that does mean something. I absolutely loved the quality of this place. It's been a couple of months since I was there, but it is worth the drive up to Windy Hill from Buckhead. I would put it on the level of Toma or Taka in terms of the quality of their fish, and above Harry and Sons. Genki doesn't even come into the same neighborhood. I like this for lunch more than for dinner, but if you're in Sandy Springs, Marietta or North Buckhead, you can be there in 10 minutes. Then it's a great dinner place. I can only comment on the lunch since this is one of my favorite, tried and true lunch spot for the past 3 years. I'm commenting today because the sushi quality is even better than ever. It was always terrific to begin with, but now the squid is tastier and memorable. It is deliciously tender. I always feel happy & healthy after eating here. Choices and quality of food are great. You'll be hard pressed to find a better sushi restaurant in Atlanta. I can't think of a reason to drive to Buckhead for sushi. Try some unique and authentic appetizers to get a better understanding of Japanese cuisine. Tempora is top notch. Make reservations if possible for larger groups. This restaurant is a little gem for sushi. Not well known but it is the best i have had in Atlanta. Will drive 15 to go an eat here. Pros: great sushi, good pricing Cons: to bright more
