Best

Guero's is so yummy! The food and service are well worth the wait (which never is too long due to the efficiency of the staff). I highly recommend the queso flameado and shrimp ...

Worst

This restaurant, to me, was highly overated in the Austin area. The food is good, but there are other restaurants that are better. The ambience is awesome. Very cultural! Pros:...

YESSSss! 8/24/2006

I completely know what McKracken is talking about! Austin is a great city and places like Gueros are contributing factors to the vibe here. If you go to Gueros, granted you're going to get your menus from the Hispanic dude dressed like an emo chick, you'll order your over-priced sh*tty Margarita from a moody server, and probably rub elbows with some movie star on your way in... who cares... I've been there when Quentin Tarrantino was there and let me tell you--what a douche. He was obnoxiously loud and careless about the other PEOPLE in the vicinity. It really was distracting and inconsiderate. And to conclude, what PEOPLE need to remember is that this is Austin not LA and whether you're Ashton Kutcher or Paris Hilton, when you're in Austin, do as the Austinites do and just be cool. No one's going to come up and ask you for your autograph, a handshake, or kisses for their newborn--get used to it. You don't need to make your presence obvious to anyone here because we just don't care. Pros: It has an old town feel, great food, and typical moody austinites serving you. Cons: Losers like Quentin Tarrantino and crying babies go there and ruin for everyone more

GET QUENTIN TARATINO OUT OF THERE!!! 8/23/2006

I actually like going to Gueros, the fish tacos rock, but the margarita are most definately lame. Anyway, I was in there one afternoon when Quentin Taratino was eating there also and he's just the most annoying person in the world to sit at a table next too. Then I was in there this past weekend and someone behind me was talking SO loud that I thought he wanted the entire restaurant to hear his conversation, also some old lady at the table had the worst laugh known to man. So, I turn around to see who is disturbing my lunch so distastefully, and who do is see?? #%&$'n QUENTIN TARATINO!!! If I'm ever at Gueros eating fish tacos and drinking over priced crappy margaritas again and Quentin Taratino is there, I AM LEAVING! Pros: Fish Tacos Cons: Quintin Taratino more

Just Ain't Worth It! 7/24/2006

New to Austin, only 14 years...Guero's was once a great place, yes, when Clinton frequented. BUT, over the past 4 years, I have had extremely bad experiences with the staff, the food, and oh my God! the wait. Our last person was parking and they refused to seat us until one of five showed up. Prior in another experience, I was told that I didn't have to be put on the list, only to be passed over and over by people streaming in, waiting on one person (of course!)...we left after an hour of not being sat down. And others, too much to mention. Most recently, on Sunday 7/22/06, we met some folks we hadn't seen in years, and who loved the place, so of course, we went again, against our better judgement. The fajitas were chewy, the food was served cold, and the wait staff was very unattentive and rude. We almost were run over by a waiter carring hot coffee. We had to wait again, for one person to park and show up. NEVER again! It just ain't worth it, not even the food is good any more. Avoid EVERY night/day. Pros: Pros deminished over time, there are no longer any pros Cons: cold food, loud, just as easily turned away as look at you more

Faboulos Tortilla Soup 6/4/2006

I like a brothy tortilla soup, not creamy. This soup has a citrusy hint. I also had the dinner salad with their own cilantro vinegarette. Loved it! My husband was most crazy for the fresh, home made tortillas. Needless to say, it will be at the top of our 'gotta go to' places when we are in Austin again. Pros: Inexpensive, Friendly staff, Healthy approach Cons: Noisy more

An Austin Institution??!?? 6/4/2006

I have been to Gueros twice and both times I dealt with inattentive servers and bar tenders, deplorable service, rude managers and staff, and an overall heir of apathy for the customers experience. My first visit a bartender was outraged that I did not ask him please for my drink. Why should I when he came up to me with an obvious attitude. The second time my friend got an entire trey of water spilled on her then the manager blamed it on her! When we were leaving all of the servers were talking about us and being very rude. Pros: Location, Patio Cons: Service, Staff, Food more

I hate Guero's 5/25/2006

The waitstaff is rude and the food is incredibly mediocre. The pollo tortilla soup doesnt even have chicken in it just revolting, soggy slop. I have NO idea why this place is popular. If you want good Tex-Mex, go to Polvos!! And for Mexican, Curras is great, too. Cons: bad food, bad service, loud more

User review by pedicam 2/16/2006

This place had pretty good food though I have had better. The line was way too long and the food was overpriced. You can get better food for a lot cheaper else where. Pros: ambience Cons: overpriced, long lines more

Not What I Expected 11/2/2005

I had heard so many goods things about this place, but I'm not sure why. First off, you cannot eat dinner at the bar - appetizers only. (alcohol bar, not talking about the taco bar). Second, the margaritas sucked and were served in either a 12oz juice glass or a ""rocks"" glass. Oh, did I mention that they cost $7.00! Third, I ordered chicken fajitas and the first piece of chicken I bit into had a bone. Fourth, like everyone else has said, you have to pay for the chips & salsa. The one positive experience I had was my waitress. I didn't think the service was as bad as some other reviewers posted. I think the only reason people like this place is the because of the atmosphere and because it's located in SoCo. Pros: Atmosphere, Location Cons: Price, Quality more

Don't go for the margaritas 10/27/2005

This place slaps a margarita on the face. They call their lemon and tequila a margarita. Then they serve it to you in a 12 oz glass. And to top it off about 3/4 of it is ice. As for the food. It was aggravating to order tacos and know that they added 1 dollar for everything you wanted in it. The guacamole as $1 per taco and it was only one spoonful. What a rip-off!! Everything was okay but I'll never go there. more

A Great Place 10/4/2005

Stop being so ridiculous! Do some of you honestly think the managers at this restaurant intend to hire rude, unprofessional wait staff? That is absolutely ridiculous! There is no doubt in my mind, if you had a problem with your wait staff and took it to management, they would take care of the problem. I seriously doubt management would put up with rudeness of any kind by their wait staff to their customersit would not be tolerated. For those of you complaining about being charged $1.50 for chips.are you kidding! ITS A DOLLOR AND FIFTY CENTS! If thats going to break your bank, maybe you shouldnt eat out. Dont let some of the comments here stop you from going to this place. Everything about it is great and I'm sure you'll feel right at home. Pros: Food, Drinks, people more

Awful All Around Place 9/25/2005

The waiter was surley and screwed up the order twice and then brought a not ordered soup. The food was terrible and tasteless. Quesadillas not rocket science for a cook were just a flour tortilla with tasteless cheese melted on them, a teeny cup of jalepenos and a teeny bowl of sour cream. The margaritas which are said to be the best in town were tequilla deprived and most likely from a cheap mix. When the mnager was aprised of the crummy service she laughed and said. ""You re kidding?"" No, not kidding Gueros deserves to be shuttered and forgotten for their culinary travesties. Pros: Parking Cons: Tasteless food, Awful service, Lousy value more

A little advice 7/3/2005

Being in the resturant industry myself, I love Gueros. The waitstaff seems like they are there to work and not to put up with nonsence. I asked why they charge for chips and salsa and they said it is because they make thier own salsas(all 3 of them). the margaritas(on the rocks) are awsome. Yes they were small in stature, but big on taste. they also make their ""RITAS"" with fresh squeezed lime juice. I Don't mind paying for quality. Also I recommend trying the homemade corn tortillas. Some of these reviews seem like they are the kind of people I don't want in my establishment. If the managers take the waitstaffs side, there is usually a reason. THEY ARE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT! Also the fish tacos are great. Pros: Fresh squeezed juices, big portions, 3 different salsas Cons: usually a wait more

Not traditional Mexican food. 6/4/2005

Im mexican and this isnt traditional mexican food. The only great thing about the food was the Carna Guisada. All the plates were about different Hot sauces on every plate there was. (not a fan of hot sauces mixed in my food) Way too expensive for the food, too long of a wait. I dont know though alot of ""out of towners"" like it, but what do they know about Mexican food! Pros: Carna Guisada Cons: Too Pricey, Nasty Hot sauces, Bad parking more

Extremely rude servers 3/20/2005

I've lived in the south austin neighborhood for a while and always try to bring visitors from out of town to Guero's. The last couple of times, I have had an extremely rude server who barely waits on our table. This is ridiculous behavior for the prices as well as time you have to wait to be seated as well as to get your food. The most recent visit, our server had the audacity to write out the amount of her tip for 18 and 20 percent. She did not deserve either....I will no longer be visiting Gueros as there are plenty of other great mexican restaurants that are friendly and worth the value. I understand it's a busy restaurant but there is no reason to act rude. Cons: slow service, rude servers more

Totally Overrated 2/20/2005

This is supposedly one of Austins hot spots but the wait is always too long, the margaritas are too small, too expensive and not strong enough. The food is OK and overpriced. Pros: people watching Cons: wait, parking, food/drinks expensive more

Why bother? 12/16/2004

When I first moved to Austin it seemed like everyone told me to check out Guero's for some good mexican food... and when I finally did I had no idea what all the fuss is about. The food is below average if that and the drinks are terrible! (my margarita tasted like water mixed with margarita mix)I think the only thing keeping this place going is their cute decor and the location. If you don't believe my rating go ahead and try it for yourself because I believe once you do you will not be back. I love mexican food and my margaritas but this place was a huge dissapointment. * Also I would like to add that I have given this place a few chances to change my mind ( being with groups of people who wanted to go) but they get a grade of an F each time. Pros: cool decor, nice trendy location, live music sometimes Cons: , bad food, bad drinks more

Extremely Rude Service 10/16/2004

After leaving a $7.50 tip for lousy service & disappointing food we were chased out of the building by the server who insisted that we hadn't left a tip & that because of management he would end up paying the tax out of his pocket. We had to settle him down take him back to our table & show him the tip.To say he was innattentive would be a gross understatement. We politely complained to the manager & were treated rudely there as well.I'm a former restaurant owner & have never experienced anything remotely like this! more

Way to pricey 10/5/2004

How can you charge $1.50 for chips? Who does that? The food is good, but for a place that is low key and not as swanky sure does have high prices. Pros: Food more

Guero's Gold Margarita 9/12/2004

The margarita must have a 95% gross margin because it was served in a smallish collins glass loaded with ice. There couldn't have been more than 3 ounces of actual margarita in the glass. Food was ""good"" at best but not great. Hot sauce was very hot with little taste. Prices were high in a realtive sense. Lunch for two was over $30 with one poor margarita each. Cons: , High prices more

Most Horrible service ever 9/4/2004

Food is average, over-priced for the quality and type of food that you get. First time in my life I don't leave a tip for the waitress and I actually don't feel bad about it. She was bad...not only bad service but also very rude. If you don't like to deal with people, find another job. more
