Best

Guero's is so yummy! The food and service are well worth the wait (which never is too long due to the efficiency of the staff). I highly recommend the queso flameado and shrimp ...

Worst

This restaurant, to me, was highly overated in the Austin area. The food is good, but there are other restaurants that are better. The ambience is awesome. Very cultural! Pros:...

SAY NO TO COUNTERFIT TEX-MEX 6/10/2008

Every time I get conned into eating here by one of my misled friends I feel like one stupid, stupid gringo. Next time you get the Guero's urge just picture the restaurant owner rolling around on a pile of money, twiddling his mustache and cackling maniacally as he stares into a hidden webcam of you sucking down processed cheese like it's exotic manna from heaven. How appropriate that the name of this joint is ""Guero's"" because apparently us white folk love to shell out dinero for faux mexican atmosphere. Gueros indeed. There's just not enough tequila in the world to wash down canned taco sauce. Pros: Trendy location: you may even spot a celebrity that doesn't know what tex-mex is supposed to taste like Cons: Guero's fooled you into believing their Banquet TV dinners are authentic mexican fare. That's the biggest con of all time. more

good atmosphere 6/9/2008

I really liked the atmosphere here. I think the best tasting plate at our table was the pancakes. The flour tortillas had to have been bagged. The migas were loaded with vegetables, big, crunchy, raw vegetables. Oh yeah, the service was sub-par. I don't know, it just wasn't what I'd expected after reading so many good reviews. When in Austin, I'll find another place. Pros: atmosphere, pancakes Cons: everything else more

Overall Guero's is the best TexMex in ATX 5/5/2008

I've been to Guero's over 10 times and I have always had terrific food and it is always served fast and very fresh. I love their salsa bar though I despise those small little bowls. I always ask for the bowls they put the beans in which they always accommodate - that way I can really get my salsa fix. Their Margarita's are some of the best in town although they serve them in those tiny glasses. I'd rather pay more and get a heftier glass, but I can't complain about the quality. I really like to sit up at the Taco bar and watch them make tortillas while hanging out with friends. The atmosphere is always bustling, but in a warm, friendly way. Ocassionally I'll get the brownie sundae with Amy's Mexican vanilla - which just about kills me after I've eaten so much food, but wow does that top it off nicely. I'm then ready for a serious nap. Pros: Delicious fresh tasting food, awesome salsa bar and darn tasty margaritas. Cons: Small margarita glasses and tiny tiny salsa bowls. more

I just wanted to hang out! 4/13/2008

Went here apx. 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning -- not too crowded. Prompt seating & service. Good breakfast menu, not too large, but good. Laid-back atmosphere. Loved the migas. Nice family atmosphere. Pros: Good service, ample portions Cons: As always in Austin, parking more

I dont get it! 3/8/2008

I have been here 3 times and simply fail to get it. Both times the kitchen staff was seated around me watching a game on TV. I had a taco plate for $10.00 and my tacos came with no lettuce, tomato, cheese, sour cream, guacamole or anything . When I asked for condiments/ dressings I was charged extra. I ordered a margarita that tasted like airplane fuel. In some situations this could be a good thing. They added more OJ, then my waitress, whom i almost want to help, she was so alone, suggested another drink. I never drank more than a sip and was charged for that drink. I ended up tipping my 25%, why should the waiter be held responsible? more

Migas Review by The Melbourne Method 3/7/2008

When the Migas arrived on the table I was instantly impressed and pleased by the sight before me, for (as you can see in the above picture) Guero?s seems to understand that if Migas are ordered than Migas should be the main occupant of the plate. While it is true that some vacant spaces remained on the plate they were small and the Migas occupied more territory than the beans did, so I was pleased right away. Furthermore the tortillas were not used to hide vacant space on the plate, as they were in a separate tortilla dish. Enough care had been taken in arranging the plate that the beans had not been able to seep under the Migas and make the eggs taste like refried beans, there was even a little garnish to add flair (a bit much and a bit silly). In addition the Migas had many veggies that were clearly visible and the layer of cheese atop the Migas could only be described as thoroughly melted. Guero?s outfits its tables with a variety of excellent salsas and I spread the salsa verde over the Migas before biting in (I recommend the salsa verde for the Migas). The Migas were good and I was instantly pleased to note that in my bite I could clearly taste: eggs, cheese, salsa, and veggies. It was good, but as Liz put it ?it kind of tastes like an omelet,? a good omelet, but still an omelet. Why? Because the tortilla chips, which were visibly present simply did not stand out, they were there, they were definitely there, I could see them but I couldn?t really taste them, and the jagged tortilla bits that generally stick out of the Migas were nowhere to be seen (the Migas were actually rather flat). The dish I ordered at Guero?s was good, it really was, filling, and quite delicious. However, I pause to really call what I received Migas. What I received was great, it really was, but Liz?s initial reaction was right on the mark: it was really more of an omelet. more

Really a place for those that do not know good Tex-Mex 3/7/2008

I can't agrue about the location and fun atmosphere. It really is tough to beat. Pros: Location Cons: Food and Staff more

Overhyped 3/3/2008

I am a tex mex fanatic and have been to dozens of tex mex resturaunts in austin. I have been to guerro's twice now and each time has been sub par at best. The first time I tried their black bean tamales which were ok but not great. I would call them edible. On my last visit I ordered mushroom and spinach enchiladas. Not only did they over charge me for the plate (the menu quoted $9.00 and I was charged $10.80) but the enchiladas were so horrible. There was hardly any filling--most of the plate was mole sauce and tortilla. Inside there were a couple of mushrooms and a few pieces of spinach. Not filling at all. The beans on the side could have used some extra flavor too. One other thing to mention is that their chips are sort of crappy too. If you want good tamales, I suggest Curra's Grill on Oltorf and I bet you could find better enchiladas at taco bell. Pros: Great service, great atmosphere Cons: food is not tasty and it's overpriced more

Disgusting 1/16/2008

I use to really like this place. however I feel let down lately. Last time I was there (and it will be my last time) I found something incredibly gross in my food. It is a neat place, but after an experience like that, they have lost my trust in their cleanliness and service. Pros: good atmosphere, big menu Cons: unsanitary conditions, long weights, pricey margs more

Overhyped and overrated. Food is sub-par at best. 12/4/2007

Guero's was one of the first restaurants we ate at when we moved to Austin a few years ago. It was recommended by several people, but sadly we were dissapointed. We decided to give it another try since it's been almost three years, and the food was even worse than we remembered. The meat in our tacos looks like dog food; the fish tacos were bits of fish smothered in mayonaise and corn. So gross. If you want authentic Mexican, go to Polvo's. Even Hula Hut is better than this place. We won't be going back. Pros: south congress location, people watching Cons: food is terrible more

Great dining experience and very reasonable prices 10/30/2007

We were at Gueros last Saturday night with a very large group of sixteen. They did their best to get us in quickly even though it was a crazy night. The waiter did awesome with this big of a group. Food was great and inexpensive.Would definitely go back! Pros: Great Food, Price, Great Service Cons: Margarita wasn't what I was hoping more

Very Austinite eclectic 8/23/2007

Pros: Sunday party, margaritas, al pastor tacos more

Paris Hilton would rather go to jail than come here. 7/5/2007

This place is an embarrasment to Austin. If bad service, crappy food and rude people are trendy, then this is the place to go. I can only reccomend it as a place to break up. Hell will freeze over before I go here again. Pros: people watching - you have the time - the band outside was really good Cons: service, food, wait time more

trendy, so-so Mexican food joint on Soco 7/1/2007

ive been here many times, mainly due to the fact that others want to go, and its a trend place to hang out. Bar is always crowded. Overall most of the food is between blase to bad, but some of the dishes are good. I suggest the chile relleno. Margaritas are horrid - go else where. Breakfast is decent - and usually much less crowded. You can sit on the patio b/c it will still be cool then. Staff is usuall disorganized and a bit dis-gruntled. I have seen them actually fighting in the hallway hear the kitchen. Whoever manages the floor on weekends should probably be let go. This place has, and will probably continue to be popular for a few more years. Go to it when you have the time, but I would not make it a regular place. There are hundreds, no thousands, of places to eat Mexican in Austin. Pros: scene Cons: food, drinks more

Horrible, Bad Food, Worse Service 4/26/2007

I always forget how bad it is. But then I go again; like last Monday night. And after the waiter literally threw our food at us, it all came rushing back. I hate this place! How could I forget? I had family in town and thought Guero?s would be a great Austin-ie place to take them. I was embarrassed that I took them there. Actually embarrassed. I had to apologize for the food and service. There are way too many great places in Austin to waste your time and money here. I won?t anymore. Pros: Nothing Cons: Everything more

This place has gone down the tubes 3/10/2007

The only reason why anyone goes here anymore is because it used to be good and it survives on reputation alone. The service is universally horrible, and since it draws a good amount of out-of-towners nobody seems to care much since they think you won't be back anyway. There is absolutely no reason to come here considering how much really good Tex-Mex there is in Austin, without the attitude. The food is mediocre, but what really distinguishes Guero's is its long wait and terrible service. Pros: Scene, location Cons: Terrible service, long wait more

Go for the experience, not the food 12/4/2006

Gueros food is bland. The service and people watching are fun, its generally got a diner feel, and you can't complain about the energy. The prices are kinda high for what you get, which, as I mentioned before, is bland and sometimes lukewarm. But its all about the atmosphere, which is bright, fun, and just goofy. Pros: Atmosphere, decent service, location Cons: food more

Great Margaritas 9/19/2006

I don't care what anyone says - the margaritas here are pretty tasty. Yup, they come in small glasses and are $7 a pop but they're worth it. The food here is decent - nothing to write home about. I certainly didn't think it was overpriced in any way. I'd go back again. more

Great fish tacos! Loved the mayo sauce. Margaritas are made fresh! 9/11/2006

The catfish tacos w/tequila mayo & freshly-made margaritas would keep me coming back for more. The margaritas should probably be served in a larger glass. But no wait. Great service. Highly recommended. Pros: margaritas, fish tacos Cons: glass too small for margaritas more

Where are the good reviews coming from? 9/3/2006

I've been here many times in my 10 years in Austin. The has always ranged from average to way below average. Both the waiters and the management seem to have a bad attitude. The food is way below average and, in my opinion, overpriced. The drinks are pretty good though...I'd recommend the margarita. Pros: Location, outdoor music area, margaritas Cons: Minimum value for money, medoicre mexican food, bad attitude more
