Best

Guero's is so yummy! The food and service are well worth the wait (which never is too long due to the efficiency of the staff). I highly recommend the queso flameado and shrimp ...

Worst

This restaurant, to me, was highly overated in the Austin area. The food is good, but there are other restaurants that are better. The ambience is awesome. Very cultural! Pros:...

Horrible waiters-bad attitude 7/22/2004

Talk about attitude problems! The wait-staff at Guero's is generally surly, unfriendly and resentful...you know what, guys? You can quit anytime you want to,this ain't the army. I won't be back...in a town where most waitstaff are pathologically pleasant,Guero's is a rude awakening and shows just how great the others are. Get over yourselves! Cons: , rude barstaff, rude hostess more

not bad, surely not good 5/23/2004

Guero's is mediocre at best. I am not snobby or anything, but this place just didn't cut it. The food is edible, but there really is much better tex-mex in Austin. The prices are not that great, either. I tend to blame this on the location. I do have to say I like the atmosphere at Guero's, though. But there really has to be more than atmosphere to a restaraunt to make it great. Pros: atmosphere Cons: , food isn't that great more

A taco bar should have good tacos 9/4/2003

I went to Guero's and got the soft beef tacos, and they were not good at all--way too dry, way too skinny, and they didn't even come with shredded cheese. This is nuts, considering that they call themselves a ""taco bar."" Also, the rice that came with the meal looked and tasted like some underdone Rice A Roni. All in all, I would not suggest this place to anyone. Except maybe someone I didn't like. Cons: Bad food more

Presidential favorite 5/3/2003

This restaurant, to me, was highly overated in the Austin area. The food is good, but there are other restaurants that are better. The ambience is awesome. Very cultural! Pros: Ambience Cons: Parking, Service more

get the queso flameado 4/29/2003

The food is pretty good here, and so are the margaritas. And the queso flameado is incredible, you have to try it with chorizo. But the wait can be ridiculously long, and it's really overpriced for the type and quality of food that you get. And who charges for chips and queso? They sure don't need to after what they charge for a taco! more

Ripped Off!!! 4/15/2003

I admit, I miscalculated my tip and shorted the waiter 3% on a $9 bill. That doesn't excuse the fact I found $2 added to the bill AFTER I signed and paid the bill (I used checkcard. Looked online and $2 more was charged). There is NO excuse for this action! Either than that bit of thievery, the food was only average and we actually had to PAY for our chips and salsa!! The place is overpriced anyway. Get your tacos at Taco Express or eat at a real Taqueria where the wait staff only speaks Spanish (Taqueria Arandinas). Pros: Good atmosphere Cons: Average quality food, Pricey. more

It was awful! 4/2/2003

The food was unbelievably bad. I know Mexican food and this sucked. The tortillas were the fake rubber kind you buy at the store. The service was worse. I would never eat there again or recommend it to anyone. I don't know how this place became so popular- must be the trendy location. The food was nothing spectacular or anything to rave about. I was really dissapointed. Go eat somewhere else. Cons: awful food, overcrowded, expensive more

MEXICRAP! 1/24/2003

I don't know what all the hype is about. Guero's is terrible. I mean, who charges for chips and salsa???? Any place that charges you for chips and salsa has got something to hide. And Guero's surely did when we ate there. To say the food was bad would be putting it mildly and the service was nothing to write home about. I really thought it was going to be much better than that. Maybe they were just on a bad day, but a trully good restaurant never really has one. Don't you agree? more

Very tasty 11/9/2002

This place is great to dine in, there are all kinds of alcoves to dine in and the service is great. The food is superior to all those except for Curra's Grill. more

Best in Town 11/7/2002

The burritos and chile con queso here are some of the best I've ever had. The service was average, but hey, it is a college town. I've eaten at many places in Austin, and this ranks with Chuy's in my opinion. Pros: Fresh, Reasonable, Friendly Cons: Crowded, Loud more

Over-rated 10/21/2002

They charge 13$ for tacos that cost 3$ in Laredo. more

I Love Guero's 9/8/2002

This is the best Mexican food resturaunt in Austin. Believe me I know. I've grown up here eating Mexican food my whole life, and Guero's is the best! Pros: food, atmosphere, inexpensive Cons: none! more

Very good regular fix 9/6/2002

We're regulars here and like it a lot. Casual atmosphere makes it easy to bring kids, and the food is very good. For some reason that I can't quite put my finger on, the food seems to be lighter than the typical grease soaked, drowning in cheese, entrees that you get at other Tex-Mex establishments. I especially like the Mole and Tacos al Pastor. Only complaint is the occasional long wait and the fact that the prices seem to have gone up significantly this year. In fairness to the other, lower, reviews we do have a couple of friends who absolutely refuse to eat here. more

Mediocore food, crappy service and flies 8/23/2002

After dealing with crappy service for the upteenth time, I vow to never go to the most overrated restaurant in town. The food is decent, but the service sucks. I think the management tries to find people who fit the phony SOCO look. Do you have a few piercings, rude manners, no social skills and want a job, apply here. We waited for over 15 minutes at 3:00 on a Tuesday for some clueless waiter to not even say I'll be right with you, let alone get us a beer. He walked by us six different times. In past visits I've had to get up and grab my own damn beer. 45 minutes to wait is ridiculous when there are so many more friendly and better tasting restaurants in town. The management at this place should get a clue and I guess so should the people who frequent this place. Pros: ??? Cons: Horrible service, warm beer, unfriendliness more

best in town 8/21/2002

its worth the 45 to hour wait......just find a place at the bar and sip on the best margerita in town...no fancy clothes just wear your sandels.... more

yee haa 8/20/2002

when in austin go where the austinites go. best atmosphere, friendly people and fantastic food! more

SOCO Style 8/13/2002

You can't beat the relaxed feel of Guero's or the style of the SOCO crowd. Even though it gets pretty crowded, it is worth it. Really great food that seems different than most mexican/tex-mex places. I wish you could eat at the bar though. Speaking of which the beers are very cold as are the great ritas.... as they need to be if you plan on being out on the patio people watching on S. Congress. It's really close to the Continental Club if you want to make it dinner, drinks, and live music. Dessert is worth it if you saved room also. Pros: Location, Atmosphere, Dessert Cons: Non-Bar eating policy more

Great Breakfast 7/30/2002

Guero's can be a pain to get into in the evenings because it's so crowded, but I've recently discovered it's got a great breakfast menu. Perfect place for a Tex-Mex brunch on a Saturday. They also serve their breakfast menu all day long, if you are so inclined. Cons: Crowded more

This place is gross. 7/19/2002

I don't know why everyone likes this place. It's totally disgusting to me. And the food is bland. Definitely NOT the best Mexican restaurant in town. more

Chicken Alambres 6/18/2002

Strong and tasty margaritas, fantastic salsa bar, great S. Congress location, and nature's most perfect food: chicken alambres. Guero's is a required stop for any visiting ex-Austinite; I only wish teleportation really existed. The only negative is that the vegetarian fare is less than stellar...but if you're a carnivore you'll be too busy eating to care. more
