Took my wife there and had a wonderful experience. Good food and a very creative menu. The wait staff were extremely curteous.

No Birthday Parties unless you want to pay more! 4/7/2011

Went to try the new (to us) restaurant with a Groupon. It was my daughter’s birthday. I brought a cake and candles like I’ve been doing for all the years we celebrate birthdays at our local restaurants. I was greeted with a smug eye on the cake box. They informed me (their actual words) that “because the chef cannot make any profit by your supplying desert, there would be a separate charge for each person in the party.” No restaurant in Chicago that I have used for family and parties for decades has ever asked this of me. I was so angry, I refused them and kept the cake with us until we left the restaurant. I also told them this was the first…AND last time we would patronize their place. We spent a nice amount of money. The food was good but I won’t miss going back there. more

Three Strikes, You're Out! 12/24/2008

We've been going to this place since it opened and it started off as a hidden jem, but is now intolerable. Tonight, for example, my fish was raw and had to be sent back (cold and rubbery in the middle), the waitress botched the wine opening and we had cork in the wine (but of course they still charged us a corking fee!), and THEY HAD NO HEAT! That's right. They had two space heaters out, none by us, and my pregnant wife froze the whole time. Their heater was broken, but they didn't mention that when we made the reservation two hours before going. Instead they waited until we ordered our appetizer, and not so much as a, ""We're giving 20% off tonight for the trouble."" When they first opened, it was an underdog to route for. Now you even have to pay for the chips and salsa that used to be free. The owner/chef also relies heavily on his friendly staff, but has no regard or persona with his customers, despite being in full view. This was our once a month $80 dinner out splurge, but tonight was the last straw. We will not be returning. Pros: When they're on food is great. Cons: Overpriced, to the point of contempt for the urban yuppie. more

Tilapia to die for!!! 10/24/2008

I love Dorado! It's BYOB and they will even bring you limes if you happen to bring Corona. The tilapia with mango salsa is so good you have to resist licking your plate. The porkchop is also outstanding. They always have interesting specials. You can't go wrong.\r \r my only complaint is that the last time they didn't bring us chips and salsa. It is on the menu as an app and you have to pay for them. I was surprised, but it's not enough of a turnoff to stop me from going there. Also, the staff seems to stick around. I have had the same waitress several times over the past 2 years. Pros: absolutely delicious! Cons: none! more

A great dining experience 9/6/2008

A friend of mine recommended this place and It was great. The food is not your typical Mexican fare but actually a fusion of Mexican and French, I had the pork which was outstanding! The tres leche cake is just fabulous and the atmosphere very cozy. I was there on a Saturday in the summer and the place was packed. The service was friendly and timely. This is a Chicago neighborhood jewel and I will definately be back! Pros: Great food, good service more

Amazing duck nachos!! 4/7/2008

This is such an amazing restaurant- on the 2 occasions that I have been there I have had the duck nachos which were perfect!! It is a small, cozy atmosphere with an open kitchen. I go for the food, but the BYOB policy is a plus. There is something truly different and special at this upscale neighborhood restaurant (I travel from Lakeview to go)! more

Great food & service in the neighborhood! BYOB! 12/7/2006

My four best friends and I went here on a Wedsnesday night for my birthday dinner and it was fantastic! There was only one problem with the whole experience- it is way cold in the resturant. I don't know if it was because there were only two other tables or it was one of the coldest nights of the year, but it was freezing.\r Other than that, the food was fantastic. I had the Crab crusted salmon with mashed potatoes and vegetables and it was amazing. My friend who is on a very strict diet had a salad and their black bean soup which she said was phenomenal. It was delicious and tasty! Just the right amount of ""spice"" in everything. The dessert was... unforgettable. I had the bread pudding (very, very recommended) my friend had the tres leches (so good) and the other had the chocolate chimichangas and I can't tell you how that was cause she didn't want to share it. :)\r One word of advice, don't eat too many chips! You are going to want room for the good stuff! It's hard though because their salsa is delicious.\r Our server, Angela (Angelica maybe? My apologies!) was really good. She kept our table moving and was flawless. \r The resturant (besides the chill) was decorated wonderfully and I was thrilled to see the cooks working on our food in the open kitchen. The food came out fast and HOT which is always a good sign that the resturant wants you to get their food fast cause it's so good :)\r Overall, wear a sweater, bring a bottle of wine, enjoy the impeccable service and the great food.\r A great little neighborhood place. I hope it stays open for a long time to come. Pros: In the neighborhood w/ a parking lot, BYOB, food, service, open kitchen Cons: Very chilly in the resturant more

Excellent Fish Dishes 7/29/2006

Dorado seemed out of the typical restaurant circuit, but was well worth the visit. Their crab covered seered salmon with capers and chipotle mashed potatoes was fantastic! Prices ranged from about $18-$25 for entrees. We had an excellent experience - a great place to go on a date. Pros: Small parking lot behind restaurant more
