A perfect date night! 5/4/2011

I went with my boyfriend and another couple - it was a great Friday night date night! They are very organized and efficient, even with a packed crowd. Some of the jokes were NOT PG, so be warned. No bad seat in the house, and not completely packed with tourists. Great find! more

Creepy Crawlies- BED BUGS 12/19/2010

A buddy and I met up at this place over the weekend to enjoy some COMEDY! We leave, part ways home, and each of us wakes up covered with bites all over us. Yes, I am now spending a couple Gs to exterminate my apartment/clean everything I own. Eff this place. I will NOT be returning. more

The Real Thing in a basement 12/12/2010

I have been to comedy shows in other clubs in the city but NOTHING tops the Comedy Cellar. Located in a basement of a restaurant I was not a believer then i saw the show! First off, John Mayer was in the audience watching the show. That guy can go any where and see comedy. He too decided to come to the cellar. Maybe it was because CHRIS ROCK walked in and did a set! It was amazing! The other comedians did not let me down. I left and my face hurt from laughing. I have been to other places in NYC but I am coming back here. Again and again and again. Thank you Comedy Cellar for doing it better than any other club in the city! more

Best Comedy Club EVER! 12/9/2010

It was freezing in New York City and I braved the elements to see what turned out to be the best comedy show EVER! The whole experience was great, easy, and fun. Walked into the same enterance that I see on the Lois C.K. show! Passed the same guy on the stairs as well!! Was ushered into the (somewhat cramped) seating. The staff was fast and very nice. My waiter, a tall guy named Arden, was great! He recommended food and was helpful explaining that I didnt need to have drinks only to hit my two item minimum. The show was KILLER! JIM NORTON! I love him! That guy from Best Week Ever, I cant remember his name. Jeff Ross was IN THE AUDIENCE watching with me! Whatever, i could go on but you should just GO! It was really great. Go! Go NOW! A lot a fun! more

AHole Manager 9/6/2010

Went there on a Thursday night. Had reservations and was waiting on line to get into the place with my friend. My friend and I were having a quiet conversation while waiting when the so-called Manager approached us and requested proof of age. I'm 47 years old and my friend is a couple of years older than me. How much of an a*hole do you have to be to single out a 47 year man from the line and proof him? After proofing us, he proceeded to ask us how many drinks we had so far that night. The answer to that question is one drink a piece for the whole night up til then. A*hole then proceeded to proclaim that Comedy Cellar is about comedy and not drinking and that he would only let us into the place if we were cut off. Isn't the whole purpose of a Comedy Club to have a couple of drinks and laugh and relax? We were in no way intoxicated or rowdy. This guy is a total moron. I'm not sure who this A*hole thinks he is or why he chose to harass us, but I'm sure he is going to cost Comedy Cellar plenty in lost business and bad reputation. My friends and I definitely won't be coming back to that joke of a place thanks to him. I had been a loyal patron of the place, but never again. While the comedians were very good, there are plenty of better places to spend your money. Places where they appreciate your business and treat you with respect. more

Very rude staff 5/28/2010

I'm not one to normal post negative reviews, but I had such a poor experience here I think it is worth noting. The staff was so rude and disorganized when I tried to go last week. I went with a party of 4 on a Monday night. I got there a few minutes after the rest of the group. The clipboard guy has unable to locate the name of my party on the seating chart. His solution was to turn me away and tell me to make a reservation for another show. The show wasn't started yet and others went in after me. I don't want to think the comedy cellar purposefully discriminated against me but I don't know why they wouldn't let me join my party. Not sure if they have the goods to back up being a prima donna or they are just fakers. Maybe New Yorkers are just rude in general. Very disappointing they don't care about their customers. They must figure most will never be back anyway. Pros: ?? Cons: Small, expensive more

Trick you into tipping almost 100% of the check cost. 5/9/2010

My husband and I went to The Comedy Cellar for a 7:30 show on a Saturday night. Admission was $18 each and they have a 2 drink minimum--all pretty standard stuff. However, the problem was when the bill came. The server charged us a 15% tip on the drinks (ok) AND the admission fee (NOT ok). He wanted almost a $20 tip on just over $40 worth of drinks (almost 50%). When I asked him about it, he became snippy and demanded that we tip him for "setting up the room" before we got there. Not wanting to ruin a good night, I handed him my credit card and decided just not to return. When he returned with the bill for me to sign, I saw that he had charged me for the drinks, admission, his tip, and there was still a blank line on the check that read "tip." So if I were not paying attention to the bill initially (and not known that the outrageous 50% tip was already included) I would have tipped him another $20--and he would have received a 100% tip ($40 in drinks, $40 tip). OUTRAGEOUS! Pros: COMICS ARE FUNNY Cons: Staff is rude and demanding more

Great comedians, Ok service 4/26/2010

This is a great little comdedy club, that truly delivers. The comediens are for the most part always great, and will have you laughing your hardest. The service may not be the greatest, but its all about the show and having a good time with friends. more

David Voice Stein and Jimmy Hammer were Great 1/21/2010

When I first came I was a little worried. I thought it would be too small. However once the show began I forgot about all that. All the comedians were great but the two that stuck out were David The Voice Stein and JImmy Hammer! Pros: Gunny people good service Cons: A little small more

NOT WORTH DEALING WITH RUDE STAFF 11/22/2009

HORRIBLE SERVICE, RUDE STAFF AND MANAGER! COMEDIANS WERE FAIRLY LAME TOO. ENOUGH SAID!! WILL HAPPILY WILL GIVE MY BUSINESS TO ANOTHER COMEDY CLUB NEXT TIME IN NYC. Pros: NONE Cons: STAFF VERY RUDE more

Ridiculously Fun!! 5/21/2009

Was not sure what to expect here, but must say that i have not laughed this hard in years.. and i laugh a lot! There were several short stand-up acts all of which were entertaining. Veronica Mosey, imparticular, was fabulous! She entertained the room from the moment she started to the second she ended, and left us wanting more. I can't wait to see her again. She was accompanied by Ross Bennett & Judah Friedlander from 30 Rock who were also wildly funny. I can't wait to get back soon and hope to see some of the same faces again. Pros: Fun, Funny, Hilarious, Great Comedians, Great Time! more

Brilliant laugh... 4/7/2009

I had a great Sunday night at the Comedy Cellar. Saw Colin Quinn and Anthony Jeselnik (who was fantastic). Good beer, great service and a really good laugh... more

service was so so.. but the show was good.... 3/1/2009

I went to this comedy club for my friend's birthday. Cover $18 which is O k because the show was very good. I have been to a couple comedy clubs before and didn't really liked them but at Comedy Cellar people make fun of everything with respect. The negative part: I had one of the special drinks "Hollywood" the first one was very good then I asked the waitress to bring me a second one and it was awful and she was not close by to ask her to change it. They should be consistent with their products (food and beverage). And there is a maximum of three drinks which was kind of weird to me. But probably I will be back. Pros: show Cons: drinks are not consistent in flavors more

Best Comedy Club 2/18/2009

I've been to most of NYC's big comedy clubs but I like Comedy Cellar best. The room has a good feel to it and the comics always seem to live up to the intimate atmosphere that's created here. Service and drinks are well above average and they have top comedian all the time. Pros: Comedians, Atmosphere, Service more

Mean and Horrible Customer Service 1/31/2009

As so many have already written, the door staff is incredibly rude and arrogant. I tried to go to the club (which I have been to a dozen times already) with a group of friends and was refused admittance even with a confirmed reservation. This is after spending a half hour on line in the freezing cold. Oh, did I mention it was my birthday? Yes, these door idiots ruined my birthday and they'll ruin yours, too. It's amazing what a little bit of power does to some bouncer loser who's probably still living with his mother. Buyer beware and go somewhere that actually respects you and wants your business. Pros: usually good names Cons: rude service, gross drinks more

Best comedy club in the city... by far 1/4/2009

Comedy Cellar is the best club comedy club in the city. First, their regular comedians are better than anyone else. Right now you can see Dave Attell, Godfrey, Greg Geraldo, Robert Kelly, etc- which are huge names in comparison and they are always trying out new material. There are also some not as famous names that are absolutely hysterical too. Ive never done a City Search review before, but I was there last week and Dave Chappelle just showed up and did 2 hours of stand up. Where else is that happening? The place was going crazy. The drinks are appropriately priced, the food is actually very good, and the atmosphere is exactly what you would expect in the village (not to mention that it gives the place character too). How can you hate on a comedy club when you can see someone like Chappelle show up? I was so impressed that after living here for 6 years I thought it warranted a comment. Pros: Best comedians, great location, excellent food upstairs Cons: none more

Great comedy, better value! 9/25/2008

I've been to the Comedy Cellar several times and have never been disappointed. You should definitely call to reserve your tickets and get in line early to ensure a good seat. You pay only $10 a person but agree to purchase two menu items as well. (Try the burgers- delicious! Drinks are also great). The thing I love about COmedy Cellar is you never know the lineup of comedians. Some nights Ray Romano will stop in! I've typically seen nobodys, but they are so funny! Once, Colin Quinn graced us with his drunken presence. He was terribly unfunny, I couldn't believe he ever made it in show business. The host/ emcee is Ardie Fuqua and he is always funny- fresh material, welcoming stage presence and great one-liners. Check it out, Ardie's worth it by himself! Pros: in the heart of the village Cons: service is pretty average more

WORST STAFF EVER 9/21/2008

the comedian ardie fuqua whom we met outside was being super arrogant towards us when we were talking amongst ourselves how wrong that incident was. he acted like he cared at first & was friendly & really was just setting us up for mockery like a stab in the back. he was laughing at us and ultimately trying to embarrass us in front of his fellow comedy club friends and workers. i previously kind of knew him through a friend who was there that night as well and whom was the original person to bring me to comedy cellar. i thought he would be cool to my good friends and i especially after that happening to us and knowing me from before, but he wasnt. i felt like i was surrounded by a bunch of high schoolers who worked at the comedy cellar. if i could describe the night and the venue i would say UNPLEASANT UNPROFESSIONAL MEAN EMBARRASSING UNECESSARY & VERY WRONG! the whole things disgusting!! im NEVER going again & i know many influential people who will hear nothing good about this place ever!!! posting these comments on every site i know... Pros: funny comedian once in a while like any other comedy place Cons: BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE. THUMBS WAY DOWN. DISRESPECTFUL MEAN STAFF. MISTREATMENT. WRONG more

Fun Times! 9/16/2008

Great intimate room for comedy that gets top notch acts. I've been there many times and always look to the Comedy Cellar when I need a good laugh. Pros: Great Comedy Club! more

Rude & Disrespectful Staff 9/2/2008

After how horribly we were treated at the door & the staff - I will NEVER recommend this place. I have never been so disrespected or horribly treasted as a customer in my life. I've heard some great things about this place - but the horrible door staff was incredibly rude & disrespectful. When arriving with my reserved party of 8, she immediate was talking very loudly and kept on interrupting me as I tried to check our group in. Yelling in my ear "ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME?" as I repeatedly said my name and spelled it out so she could find it & realize I wasn't making my reservation up. They demanded our IDs rudely & the staff immediately assumed that they were fake. The bouncer just started laughing was continued to make rude remarks and did not listen as we explained they were indeed real IDs. After coming out with a book on "IDs" they would not let one of us in and immediately dismissed us and would not let us in. Our entire was completely appalled at how all of us were mistreated and glad we didn't waste our money at an establishment that doesn't know how to treat people with respect. Cons: Worst Door Staff more

  • Located in a basement beneath the Olive Tree Cafe, this popular club has hosted a lineup of performers ranging from William Shatner, Ice T and David Lee Roth to Colin Quinn, Greg Giraldo and Dave Attell. The tight quarters, college-age regulars and raucous atmosphere make for a quintessential NYC comedy experience--as does the high probability of unannounced drop-ins by the likes of Dave Chapelle and Robin Williams. A full bar offers beer, mixed drinks and specialty cocktails, while the menu from upstairs features burgers and wings, plus some vegan fare like a veggie kabob platter.
