Big Let Down!! 1/16/2009

Chichen Itza was a big let down!! We drove all the way from Orange County and were very disappointed with the food! It came very highly recommended by a local. But did not meet our criteria! We will not be returning . . . Ever! more

Diamond in the ruff 6/17/2008

Dinning here is as close to Yucatan your going to get, without the travel...Thank you for the incredible food, great serivce and memorable evening with my family. We are from Yucatan and we cound not have been more pleased. Pros: Food, Service, Clean Cons: Location more

You gotta try it at least once 5/4/2008

I've only been to this place once and I will have to agree with everyone else: the service rocks. The food was simply awesome. I lived in Yucatan for over 6 years and let me tell you folks- the flavor is as close as you can get to the real thing. My boyfriend had the cochinita pibil which he totally fell in love with. For appetizers we had the panuchos which I HIGHLY recommend. If you thought Mexican food was all about burritos, quesadillas, and taquitos think again. Yucatecan cuisine is like no other. We can write great reviews about t his place ranting and raving about the excellent food and service but you have got to check it out for yourselves. Pros: the food Cons: nada more

five star experience 2/28/2008

I don't know much about food ingredients, but guys, this is my favorite place in town, and I'm sure it is from some other people too. I have been traveling to the Yucatan and I have to say it, this place it's pretty much the closest you will get to try the real flavors from that region. For me this place is great , they have fantastic food, it's a nice place inside( I agree, the neighborhood is not the best area), and the waiting staff is very nice and friendly. About the bakery near this place .... I have to be honest, I saw the place, and I did not even want to try it out, maybe could be cheaper than Chichen Itza, but i rather pay a lil more and get better service and food. Believe me Chichen Itza's food worth the bucks !!! Pros: Great service, great food Cons: music...i think it's too romantic for groups of people more

Great Cochinita Pibil. Great overall food, and excellent service 2/23/2008

I have to strongly disagree with the last reviewer who called Chichen itsa's Cochinita Pibil blad. I was in for valentine's day and ordered this dish, the meat was super flavorful, tender and just plain delicious. My date had a beef dish that was so tender you didn't need a knife to cut it. Maybe the previous reviewer got a bad batch of cochinita? The service was warm and friendly, it was packed on valentine's a we got quick (not rushed) service. They also had a tasting menu that looked very good for the price. Yes, the neighborhood is not the best but you barely have to step outside, just use the valet parking that is at the front door. Oh, and by the way, I'm also of Yucatecan descent and the flavors were right on, truely authentic. And in regards to the comparisons with La Flor de Yucatan... I've been going to La Flor for the past 10 years for hojaldra de jamon y queso & other great stuff, but their cochinita is NOT better than Chichen Itza's and there is just no comparison, their both great in VERY diferent ways! Pros: Great food, great service, valet parking, great music selection Cons: nothing more

Was not what it seemed 2/19/2008

I wanted to review this Restaurant because my sister had told me about its Authentic Mexican Flavors. This is my first review ever because I want people to know what happened when I tried this place out. The area is a little out of sorts in the later evening hours so ladies don't go it alone. Pros: Place was Romantic Cons: Hated the food more

Looks can be Deceiving... 2/19/2008

After so much hype of Chichenitza and their Yucatan dishes; I decided to check it out myself. Though their service was...eh, o.k. I expected a lot more for the price and certain ratings. Unfortunately I was completely let down. As a native of Yucatan, I know the authentic flavors...and let me tell you they're lacking it. Yucatan flavor is LOADED with seasoning, but not necessarily spicy...and definitely NEVER EVER BLAND!! Pros: Valet parking Cons: The Food more

Great Meal 12/9/2007

Went here on a Saturday night not knowing what to expect. I must say that I was very impressed. The neighborhood is not great however the restaurant had Valet Parking. Inside, decor was nice (pretty trendy but not too fancy) As far as the food, it was an awesome meal. (not expensive at all) The ceviche was delicious and the Pork Pipian was amazing. Service was great too. I will definately go back very soon. Pros: Service/Yucan Cusine Cons: Neighborhood more

Good, but not Great 10/18/2007

After all of the hype surrounding this place following Jonathan Gold's review in the LA Weekly, I decided to give it a try. Hidden on the first floor of an old Hollywood apartment complex in Mc Arthur Park, Chichen Itza is a fun find if your in the area. The quality of the food is good--but not worth a drive to the East side if you aren't already in the area. We ordered the Sole with jicama salad and the chile reyeno stuffed with albacore. The sole was well cooked and pretty delicious, but not worth the hefty $15 price. I wouldn't order the chile reyeno again--the tuna didn't taste entirely fresh and its accompanying sauce settled badly. more

Authentic and Tasty Food From the Yucatan!~ 10/10/2007

I went there on Friday night with my boyfriend and his family. The service was great. They didn't have the ""That's not my job"" attitude. Everyone was helpful and non-pretentious. They were attentive and knowledgeable of the food. They have the best Ceviche and Chips! Along with the great service, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The restaurant is definitely a destination spot; so make sure you get directions before going there. Pros: Appetizers Cons: Area more

memorable experience 9/17/2007

I went here once with a class- I had some tamale- i forget the name but I loved it! we also had nice appetizers- i want to call them tacos but there was a different name for them at this restaurant. The decor wasn't extravagant but that didn't matter. We went at night but I'm sure there's a lunch rush you may want to avoid. try delicacies of the yucatan here! more

We were so looking forward to it. 9/2/2007

and then we tasted the food. My wife and I had the pork pipian, the pork was tasting raw and the pipian sauce was flavorless, the poc chuc, which im sorry to say it was just flavorless pork chops, appetizers that were interesting on paper but just didn't seem to make it off the plate, no salt shaker around and sangria that was mainly red ice water barely hinting alcohol. After so many good reviews, we didn't expect walking out disappointed. The one thing i do agree with the other reviews is the great service, that was the main reason i tried to put a good dent on my plate, but it was hard. Pros: Enjoyed the habanero pepper Cons: The food more

food was awesome! 8/29/2007

the service was outstanding, waiter was very attentive and helpful. we had the ceviche (highly recommended!), queso relleno (very tasty) and the pipian de puerco (pork just melts in your mouth...so tender!). we are definitely going back to visit the next time we are in los angeles! Pros: great food, good service. Cons: none. more

A hidden gem 7/7/2007

Went there to check it out on Friday. This place should be full, but sadly it hasn't caught on - yet. It's near McArthur Park - they have valet parking if you're at all concerned about safety (we weren't concerned). more

Best authentic Yucatan food in L.A. 6/15/2007

Great authentic yucatecan food. Had a bunch of appetizers, all were good to excellent. Will be back soon. They had live trio playing, free valet parking and excellent service. The decor and ambiance are also great. We didn't need a reservation to get in. Highly recomended. Pros: Great food. Good prices. Nice place. Free valet parking .Live music on Fridays Cons: None. more

Amazing Restaurant 6/9/2007

Stopped by for dinner saturday night. This place is amazing. The food was out of this world! I had the Bistec a la yucateca --a marinated thin filet mignon-- and my husband had the Chochinita Pibil --roasted pork-- and we split a chile stuffed with tuna appetizer. All three dishes were memorable, excellent flavors and beautifully presented. The service staff was very friedly and helpfull. The place was pretty full at about 8 pm but or food didn't take more than 20 minutes to be served. Oh, we finished the meal by spliting a sorbet make of tropical fruits (can't remember the names).... best sorbet I have ever had! You have to check it out. Pros: Excellent food, reasonably priced, free valet friendly service Cons: Room gets a little noisy when busy more

Slammin' Authentic Comida Mexicana 3/1/2007

The food is amazing. Chichen Itza catered our wedding a year and half ago and we were so excited they opened their first major restaurant. Pros: The food is delicious Cons: Service was average more

I think I have a new favorite mexican restaurant 1/27/2007

Me and my boyfriend went for dinner yesterday after a coworder told me about it. This place serves new and interesting (to me at least) mexican food, nothing like any other mexican restaurant I;ve been to. It's like home style cooking in a restaurant. The flavor and presentation of the food was very good. We had an appetizer plate that was like a sampler and two orders of cochinita pibil. The cochinita pibil is a pork dish baked wrapped in banana leaf and marinated in this tangy citrus juice. It's probably the most moist and tender pork I've ever had. The restaurant is pretty with some outdoor seating (that no one was using, kinda cold last night). There was plenty of street parking at 8:00 pm. They also had live music wich was nice, we'll definitely be back. The prices were very reasonable considering the nice decor, good service, food and live music, about $70 for two including appetizers, main course, desserts and a couple of glasses of wine. I didn't score it a 10 because perfection does not exist!! Pros: Food, live music, nice place, romantic, good service. Oh, did I mention the food! Cons: none. I can't wait to go back. more
