Cupcakes Low On Stock... 5/19/2007

I had recently watch Bobby Flay's Throw down with Auntie Ems, and was curious to go try them. After sitting in LA traffic for about 45 minutes I was really craving a Red Velvet and Chocolate Cupcake when I had arrived at Aunties. I walked in and noticed they were low on selection, they had a few small cupcakes and some bigger coconut cupcakes and 2 chocolate cupcakes sitting in the case. After a little wait in line it was my turn to order. The guy asked what I wanted and I had pointed to the 2 chocolate and asked about the red velvet. He said they were all out of red velvet and started talking about ""checking on litlle chocolate cupcakes in the back."" He then just left me, and another customer walked up and order from another cashier and bought the last 2 chocolate cupcakes! I could not believe what had just happened! The guy helping came back and had asked again what I wanted I told him, ""well I wanted the cupcakes that lady just bought."" He simply said ""Oh well."" I then walked out still amazed at their little selection and very, very poor service. I wont waste my time going out there again! Pros: After reading the other comments about cupcakes being dry, I didn't get to taste the dryness. Cons: Everything, Low on stock, poor service, busy, messy tables, etc more

the cutest ever 5/8/2007

First off. it's almost like walking into a line at a small country store in what seems to be the middle of eagle rock and glendale. But it's fantastic. I ordered the quiche and should have read the review below..you apparently have to get there early for that..So instead i got a turkey sandwhich. It was amazing. It was on this rosemary bread and the sandwich was HUGE. I had to take home one half. I sat on a little tabe out on the patio and I would say it's the best for people watching. I would also say that if you are in a hurry...you should probably skip this place. It definately was a ""take your time"" lunch destination...and no one hurries too much. Which for me was kinda nice. It's very relaxed and the atmosphere is a lazy day. However i also saw the rushed people get very frusterated with this enviornment ..so that being said. Enjoy the mint ice tea with real mint leaves and I loved the lemon bar. I have yet to try the cupcakes..but a girl in line said ""there really dense and it took me 3 days to eat..the lemon bars took me 5 minutes. We both chose the lemon bars! I will definately be standing in line on my days off lazily sitting on the patio sipping my ice tea..great little hangout spot! Pros: parking, good area, great food, baked fresh desserts, good for weekends Cons: long line, kinda takes time to get your food, not really a ""service"" oriented place more

Cute Restaurant 4/13/2007

I ordered the steak sandwich and the steak was very good but the bread was to hard. I dug out the soft part of the bread and ate my sandwich. I got the small red velvet cupcake and the icing was good but the cake portion was dry and no flavor. Pros: Charming Cons: Pricey & Food Average more

cupcake review 4/9/2007

I have been to Auntie Em's three times just to try the popular cupcakes. Though the cupcakes are huge (around $3.50 a pop), they are usually awfully dry, and topped with too much frosting. I was really disappointed with the chocolate chocolate I tried last week, which turned out to be so tasteless that I threw it away after one bite...and I bought two of them. :-( I've baked better cupcakes from the powder mix at the grocery store. Anywho, I must say that I did try a red velvet cupcake that wasn't terribly dry and it was fantastic. The best I ever had. I wouldn't recommend getting any cupcake here other than the red velvet as I have tried so many of their disappointing flavors. This place is not worth driving miles to get to. Also, not much variety in the cupcakes. If you want consistent, quality cupcakes skip this place and head a city over to Violet's in Pasadena. more

Great lunch, not so great cupcakes 3/7/2007

A friend and I went to Auntie Em's just for the cupcakes and sadly were disappointed. While Em's has a friendly staff, delicious lunch food (especially the B.L.A.S.T. sandwich), and a cozy interior its cupcakes are mediocre. First of all they are massive, so don't try eating one alone. We tried the chocolate chocolate and the red velvet and both had dry, too dense cake. The frosting was also overly sweet and thick. Perhaps it's better to come in the morning when they're fresh? We had to get our cupcakes out of refrigerated cases in the corner and it was impossible to tell how long they had been there for. Go for the lunch choices but not for the cupcakes. Pros: friendly staff, quick service Cons: cupcakes, parking more

worst breakfast of my life 2/25/2007

this was, hands down, the worst breakfast experience i've ever had. not only were the staff rude, but the food was TERRIBLE and overpriced. the scrambled eggs were undercooked and gooey, the pancakes were soggy and burnt (how did they manage that?!), and the orange and honey french toast was terrible. we thought the cupcakes would be the redeeming factor, but the carrot cake was full of chewy nastiness, and we haven't gotten the courage to try the red velvet one we brought home. we left most of our meals on our plates, so essentially we spent $30 on a few slices of bacon and about half a banana. thanks, auntie em's. Pros: we don't ever have to come back. Cons: rude staff, overpriced, terrible food. more

great food 12/30/2006

Went by today also and they are filming a t.v. show there, and was assured everything will be back to ""normal"" tomorrow. Pros: Fresh seaonal food. Cons: Can get busy. more

Worth the occasional weekend wait 12/14/2006

Yes, the wait can be long during peak breakfast/brunch times on weekends, but the ever-changing specials menu is worth checking out. I've had the spicy sausage & cheese grits and also the fried green tomatoes and was pleased with both. Do expect to pay a little more for the unconventional menu offerings, I concur with another reviewer who typically pays close to $30 for two people.\r \r To add to the ongoing Auntie Em's cupcake debate, I've had better elsewhere-- the carrot cupcake we tried went a little overboard on the frosting-to-cake ratio for my personal preference. Pros: Chalkboard specials, relaxed ambience inside, pretty easy neighborhood parking Cons: A little pricey, occasionally a long wait to order more

Great Breakfast 11/24/2006

We had breakfast here and it was great. It's not your usual bacon and eggs dishes. They serve up some gourmet plates like salmon quiche, specialty pancakes, and whatever is in season. The food is really good and it seems like their menu changes daily because they write everything on a chalkboard. We went for breakfast a little bit late (at around 2PM) and most of the stuff on the menu was gone, so if you want a better selection go early, but you will run into the crowds. I went around 2PM purposely to avoid the crowds and the lines. I also tried one of their most talked about red velvet cupcakes and wasn't very impressed. I thought the cake was really greasy and heavy. But I guess if you're into super sweet cupcakes, you would really like Auntie em's red velvet. It's really really big too. Pros: Breakfast is great. There is plently of outdoor seating if you want to bring the little one (doggie). Cons: Expensive. We had a breakfast for two for close to $30. more

So busy, but so worth it 11/24/2006

Wow, are the cupcakes here ever amazing! The last time I was here my brain almost exploded from having to choose between all the delectable desserts from their baked goods table. There was a big line, with not much space, but it was definitely worth it. more

The food is gooooooood! 11/21/2006

The sandwiches, the quiche, and ohmigod...the cupcakes...they're all so good! I was a little apprehensive when I first entered into Auntie Em's because it looked a little rundown. It was pretty much self seating with utensils that were in cups on all the tables. Not exactly fine dining, but the food more than made up for it. There was an orzo pasta salad that was to die for. Can't wait to go back again! Pros: Yummy yummy food Cons: Decor more

Best Red Velvet Cupcakes 11/20/2006

I think the red velvet cupcakes are by far the best i've had.. and i've tried virtually almost every single red velvet in l.a. They're HUGE, and the cream cheese frosting is phenomenal. The cake was sooo moist and delicious and wasnt too chocolately (like some red velvets). The coconut cupcake i had was terrible though.. it was soo dry and the only thing that salvaged it was the cream cheese frosting. I think their cupcakes might be a h*t or miss. I also had their chicken salad sandwich which i hated! There was way too much mayo and the chicken pieces had alot of fat - wouldnt recommend it. more

Great place, not so good cupcakes 11/19/2006

Am I the only one that hates their cupcakes? I have been to Auntie Em's numerous times over the last two years (6-8 times a year), and I am always drawn to their big beautiful cupcakes. Every time I get one the taste is so disappointing that I have to throw it away. The red velvet cupcake is greasy and mealy tasting, though it looks beautiful. Same for the chocolate and carrot cake. I really don't understand why everyone raves about these $2.00 cupcakes! Gross!! To be fair, the chocolate brownies are amazing. We often buy them to take home and crumble over ice cream. The breakfast and lunch dishes are large enough for two to split. Pros: Awesome breakfast choices, variety of dessert choices Cons: Cupcakes are gross more

Click Your Heels For the BEST BREAKFAST 11/18/2006

Auntie Em's Kitchen is as home grown as you can get. Yet there is a little bit of Oz in every bite you take. First of all, they are located on Eagle Rock Blvd. in an area that most foodies wouldn't be attracted to. However, word-of-mouth has made it one of the most popular breakfast/lunch eateries around! The line is literally out the door every time I go but the wait is well worthwhile. The breakfasts are hearty and original. As noted in many of the eatery's reviews, the cupcakes are to die for! My favorite is still the chocolate. But try to wait until you have had your meal before you indulge. Pancake lovers will enjoy the fluffy buttermilk pancakes with bananas, strawberries and coconut and the honey orange French toast can't be beat. I also love their open face egg sandwiches served on grilled ciabatta bread. Breakfast lovers will also be thrilled to know that Aunty Em's Kitchen has expanded their weekend breakfast hours until 3 p.m. Yay! Pros: Great food, cozy atmosphere Cons: parking is scarce, waiting on line more

BEST PASTRIES, good breakfast & lunch! 11/14/2006

i've been coming to auntie em's since they've changed owners. their pastries are to die for!\r i love their cookies, brownies, and cupcakes! i had their breakfast about 5x, and those were really good too. they have these open faced breakfast sandwiches that will get you full quick =) i'd recommend this place to anyone. i recommend it to anyone looking for good sweets! more

what a treat in eaglerock! 9/18/2006

I just moved to the neighborhood and discovered this gem. Breakfast and lunch and homemade baked goods. Very tasty grits with sausage, and outstanding homemade granola. They have a artisan cheese shop nextdoor that has some of the best cheeses I have seen since moving from up north. I cant beleive this place is in my neighborhood. Pros: Really fresh food made from scratch Cons: can get a bit busy more

good food/ amateur staff and ambience 8/21/2006

Cupcakes and brownies are exceptional, other food is good too. If the staff were less amateur, this really would be a great place, (although the ambience could be better, too). Some staff are so friendly they stand chatting with regular customers or friends forever while everyone else stands in the cramped doorway waiting to finally place an order. Other servers are downright rude and dismissive, like they're doing you a big favor. They rarely keep thier self-serve water and coffee bar filled, and the tables sit uncleared for a long time even when people are standing there waiting to sit down. (Tables are left sticky, too, and the staff seems too cool to clean things up for the next customer.) I usually get my food to go now, and only if I feel like dealling with the line and the attitude. Too bad, 'cause the food is quite good. Pros: cupcakes, fresh food Cons: staff, ambience more

Nirvana 7/8/2006

The most amazing food. The french toast is so delicious. And just looking at the cupcakes makes me happy. I can't believe this is in Eagle Rock. It feels like your in your aunt's kitchen on her farm and everything she makes for you is touched by wholesome goodness. I think I found food heaven. I even love the coffee cups. Sure, the line can get a bit crazy but nothing like Culver City's S&W Country Diner. Pros: fresh creative breakfasts amazing baked goods more

The biggest bestest cupcakes in all the land 6/6/2006

I've had the foofy westside cupcakes, the cupcakes from Beverly Hills and even my neighbors moms cupcakes and I can say one thing, Aunti Em can bake a mean cupcake! For the same price as the elite gourmet sprinkled cupcakes you will get a big fat cupcake that will fill you up faster than you can say... cupcake. more

I love this place for brunch!! 3/4/2006

Auntie Em's looks like it has minimal seating when you drive by, but there's three seating areas, two of which are outdoors. Sometimes you have to wait a few minutes, but not too long and it's always worth it. The food is great with plenty of variety. The staff and customers are a great bunch of East Side Angelenos. I can't get enough of this place. Pros: The food!, ambience Cons: Crusty bread more
