I was considering cutting my hair for a while. I've grown accustomed to cutting my hair myself due to the fact that every time i go to a hair salon and try and get my hair cut i am usually EXTREMELY unhappy with the outcome. I always try to bring a photo of what i like and am as descriptive as possible, and for some reason my hair just doesn't come out how i want or expected. Maybe im just a difficult customer. So anyway, I wanted to cut my hair like Edie Sedgwicks hair, very short, and i wasnt sure i could cut it myself this time. I went on to google and typed in for some local spots and after reading some reviews decided to head over to astor place hair designers. I went there feeling uneasy, but left feeling SOOOOOOO HAPPY. I mean i love my hair cut and my hair color. Noemi did my hair, she was sure to give me exactly what i wanted, even referencing the photo more than once to be sure i got what i asked for. She was very friendly and upbeat, which added to the experience by making me comfortable. I will be going back there and continue to get my hair done by Noemi, she is WONDERFUL! more

I've been visiting Astor Hair since 1991! Even moving 50 miles away, I still make the trip into Manhattan. Jose is the best hairstylist there. I've been visiting him for 20 years. He's a great conversationalist, making an otherwise boring and time consuming chore something to look forward to. Schedule an appointment (he is very popular) and you will not be disappointed. more

Astor Place as an NYC cultural institution deserves a review of its own (I always feel very hard core walking down those metal steps), but this review is for Regina. After getting a pixie cut on a lark/dare while on vacation, I was worried about maintaining it back home in NYC. Every time I had visited a salon up until this point, I had spent way more money than my starving student budget could reasonably handle. I went in to see Regina at Astor Place based on some yelp reviews, and after my first time in her seat, I've never gone anywhere else. Forget about the good price-- the haircuts with Regina are consistently the best, time after time. I've been seeing her for about 3 years now and am terrified of what will become of my hair when I leave NYC!! She is professional, kind, and EXTREMELY PRECISE-- down to the last hair. She's also good about suggesting new looks-- when I've wanted a more dramatic change, and when I've asked for something more subtle, she's always delivered. The best part about cuts from Regina is that they don't stop looking good after you wash them out. She cuts her clients hair so the style lasts as long as possible and look great in between visits. I cannot recommend her highly enough!! I send all of my friends who want pixies to her, but I also see her with clients of all different hair textures/colors/lengths, so I have a hard time believing that there is anything she can't do. more

This place is incredible. I never considered getting my hair cut regularly or in the same place until now! Thank you Mercedes for a great cut and even greater price! Also this sort of informal atmosphere is exactly what I've been looking for all these years. Good place, this one. more

I first went there three years back because I didn't have the time to go to my stylist. I went to Astor Place because what girl doesn't want to try getting her hair cut at a barbershop? The first time around, it came horribly! I don't even remember who the woman was but she kept trying to convince me about how I needed treatment and color in my hair. I really didn't come in for a marketing pitch... She charged me $40 and I left unhappy. Once I got home, I was too furious to let my experience go. I called in and told them that I hated my haircut and I wanted it recut. They said fine and I went in. They sent me to Regina and she recut my hair not expecting a tip at all. And the finished product? I was hooked. I don't have easy hair and I let my hair grow out long and go to her about once or twice a year to cut it really short. Regina makes the transition flawless. I refuse to go to anyone else ever again. She is EXTREMELY personable, professional, and just amazing. I refuse to give her any direction. Just leave your hair in her creative hands and you will not regret it. How good is she? I always give her a 40% tip and I never feel that I gave enough. more

Jose has been cutting my hair for almost twenty years. When you sit in his chair you not only get a quality hair cut but also a warm and friendly chat. Jose pays close attention to the details of what you asked and you don't feel rushed (unless you are). He has always been very professional and personable. I highly recommend him. more

I've been getting my hair cut by Jose for 10+ years now. I moved out of NYC 5 years ago and I still haven't had my hair cut by anyone else. I've recommended his services to a number of friends and not once have I gotten any negative feedback. You cannot go wrong with Jose and you might gain some wisdom once you settle into his chair. more

If your mission is to get a good cut without all the dilly dally then go here. Most of these salons now days think that the frou frou and designer couches are going to help their awful haircutting job. Lets face it your not taking with you the mood lighting and the good smelling candles. I have been going to Astor Place Hair Designers for many years. My hair has never looked so great thanks to Irma who performs miracles with my hair every time I go to her. I've tried other hair salons but nothing compares to the talents of the Astor Place hair designers, particularly Irma. She is the only one I will allow to do my hair. I had a Keritan treatment today along with a cut....looking great...have gotten soooo many compliments by people I don't even know. Thanks Irma!!! Love you Lady!!! more

I've been going to Irma for a number of years now and would not even consider having my hair done by anyone else. That's because she understands the nature of my hair intuitively. All I have to do is say how many inches I want taken off and where I'd like it thinned out and she does it just right. Sometimes, I need the haircut for a special event and I know I can trust her not to cut it too short when that wouldn't be appropriate for the occasion. When I walk into work the next day, my co-workers notice and I tell them where I got it cut and by whom. Last week, I walked into Astor Place looking like I had a lawn on my head. But, after Irma worked her magic on my hair, I looked my best. So, thank you Irma! Besides how great she is at cutting hair, I think she's a really nice person. more

I went to Astor Place for the first time yesterday after a friend recommended that I go here. While googling the location I read up on a few of the reviews, Irma had multiple fab reviews. I feel so lucky to have walked in at a slow time (it was shortly after noon) and be automatically referred to Irma without even asking. I wasn't the easiest of customers, I needed to have my roots highlighted and I wanted my hair cut, was bored with the current getup but didn't know what I wanted (ever been there?). Irma did things nobody ever done to my hair! Not only did she do the foil highlights, she went back over bits with a brush and made sure there were highlights everywhere (around the ears, in between bits in back). She also did the toner thing on me so that the highlights would blend & not be too brassy. Then I got not just one but 2 conditioner treatments. Wow! She gave me a beautiful bob haircut (it works for me cuz I like things to be easy), was super friendly and the price was reasonable. Will def be going back :) more

This place is a gem. For the past year, I have been relying on Lifebooker to book cheap haircuts at expensive places. The only problem is, the times I can book are odd, and you should tip on the original amount. W/ Lifebooker I felt pressure to go to a different place every time, because a lot of the places seem like their deals are for first-timers. I really wanted to find a hairdresser I like and stick to going to the same place, so I looked up where the cheapest and best is and came across the thousands of great reviews for Astor Place. Based on the reviews [and common sense], obviously your experience depends on who specifically you go to. So I tried to find someone who was always well reviewed by women, and narrowed it down to a ranked list of who my choices would be. First on my list was Regina, and lucky me, she was working on a man's haircut with no one waiting when I got there. The place I went before was less than stellar and charged almost 3x the price [though I had a HomeRum deal which made it cheaper]. The place before gave me layers that were way too drastic for my hair type and thickness. I explained what I needed [evening out of the layers] and she knew right away what I was talking about [agreed that the other place screwed me]. I personally don't like being pressured to talk the whole time, and Regina is great if you're like that. She isn't cold either - she just is good at reading what kind of person you are and if you're into small talk or not. She is unassuming and basically blushed when I explained I was going to her based on reviews I read online. She is definitely popular with men, while she was finishing my blow dry, she accrued a line of 5 men, all willing to wait it out to have her cut their hair. Note: if you prefer a shiny/posh/modern environment this is not the place for you. It is run-down and "hole in the wall". It is cash only but they have an ATM inside. Not many high-end products from what I can tell, tons of people, tons of stations cluttered with personal effects. But, I think it's charming. more

By luck I walked in for the first time without an appointment and was assigned the best person in the whole place! After searching for years for an affordable but excellent stylist, I've found her. She does do all kinds of beautiful coloring and treatments, but I usually just opt for a nice cut and blow-out. (It's $25 cash for an excellent wash and cut if you want to save money.) I love Irma. more

I found Irma at Astor Place Hair 3 months ago. My hair was horribly damaged and dried out. Irma performed magic. I had the Coppola Keratin Conditioning treatment, my hair was dyed a beautiful rich brown and I got a great flattering haircut. I just went back for a touch up of my color and a trim and once again, my hair looks healthy and beautiful. Go see Irma- she will fix your hair! more

I've been going faithfully to Rita Ragone ever since I found her last year (based on great reviews online), and have already referred many of my friends to her, who are now huge fans. Rita is amazing at cuts, but ESPECIALLY great at color and highlights. She actually leaves your hair healthier after the color process. In addition to being a hair miracle worker, she is also a genuinely wonderful person and a pleasure to be around and talk to. I wish I needed to get my hair cut more often. I wouldn't go to anyone else. more
