What a treat to be able to have this gentlemen cut and color my hair. He is a sweet heart, a very simple person, with a down to earth attitude,and he knows about hair! I actually can say that ALAN is the best haircutter and colorist I ever encounter. I am coming back, and my grand daughters as well , because Alan's is giving then , The Brazilian Keratin Treatment. I have done thousands of deep conditioning , and they work for a week, ( if ) but "The best thing a hairdresser ever did to my hair. Took two hours, but worth every minute of it. The color it's great , ( hi and low lights ) the way he uses the board to get to my roots ... the dedication Alan has , taking his time to make sure every hair gets treated , and done right! I am the luckiest person, I walked into Astor Place Hair and a woman was leaving with the most incredible hair so I asked her who did she go to & she told me Rita who is a real celebrity hair stylist and makeup artist. So went over to Rita and set up an appointment. I did everything backwards I went in and got the greatest find and most talented ....Rita! I was shocked that I could be so lucky especially after looking up on the web who Rita is and finding out that she is rated #1 everywhere!! I have finally found a stylist I have been searching for! I came here to CitySearch a couple of months ago looking for a new salon and a new stylist that I can trust with my hair. God knows I have tried them all and never felt 100% satisfied - until now. I decided to try Rita based on all the positive feed back I read here. To go into a bohemian place like Astor place, it's a bit intimidating, but I am glad I did. Alan is down to earth, fun and a Artist. He knows about styles, and how to do it . I really love it! He gave me a high lights, low lights, and touch my base color . My hair looks , perfect. . Ricardio gave me a bad haircut, which is profound because it is very hard to mess up my hair. I have hair like Matt Damon's, which is a really simple cut. He cut mostly everything even, but left a giant wave in the front, of uniform length from end to end, like Elvis hair. I returned to have Ricardio fix it, but all he did was trim it uniformly a little shorter, and I still looked like Elvis. When I got home I decided to trim it myself and now I look like Lloyd from Dumb and Dumber, or Alfalfa from The Little Rascals. As for the establishment, this place is no frills. You walk down into a basement and there are about 30 haircutters scattered about with their own little stations. Whoever said there were 3 floors? I just saw a dank, ugly basement. One thing I can hand these guys is fast service. I walked in with no appointment (Monday at 4pm) and was seated and sheared in about 15 minutes. This was my first visit and it was not satisfactory.
