Amazing, authentic, and intimate 1/27/2009

My wife and I love this place, they have live jazz on Sundays and some of the most mouth-watering pasta in Seattle. I love the gnocci, and my wife usually stays on a risotto tip. These are not standard Italian fare, but the other dishes look good too. All in all, a great experience. Pros: Delicious, romantic more

Terrible Experience with Mediocre Food 6/29/2008

I will start with the positives. The food was okay...moving on. Pros: Great place to pay high prices for mediocre food Cons: Horrible rude staff, food was mediocre at best more

great neighborhood place; good Italian food and wine; fabulous service 4/25/2008

Asteroid has been a favorite for years. The transition from Wallingford to Fremont took a bit of getting used to, but the new(er) venue is warm and welcoming (sit by the fireplace or the front windows). Live music and art (some for sale) are just a few examples of Marlin's commitment to community and the elements of graceful living. He has created an straightforward yet interesting Italian menu with the pasta standards and some fun fresh sheet items. Being vegetarians has never been a problem for us to find a tasty appetizer or meal (ravioli and gnocchi are great) and there have been occasions when the kitchen prepared something that was not exactly on the menu upon request. Marlin's wine choices, heavy on the Italians, have never left us wanting. They have affordable wine tastings on Thursday evenings with appetizers. And Asteroid is one of the few places in Seattle that you can actually get a limoncello or a choice of grappa. The service is gracious, prompt, and informative (we've never had problems with service noted by other reviewers). Asteroid is a special place that may not be absolutely perfect every time out, but it is always a place where you feel like your entertainment dollar was exceedingly well spent supporting a local, family owned, neighborhood place, with a big heart and huge commitment to people, arts, politics, and good eating. Pros: service, food, Italian wines, fireplace Cons: parking (but check out the lot behind the building) more

Bad food, bad lighting, not worth the price tag 2/18/2008

Here's the thing, we thought it was a ""cozy & omantic"" place to spend our evening. From the moment we walked in, we knew we were in trouble. We were sat at a table that faced the open-wall kitchen. Within minutes of trying to look at my love's face, my eyes started watering due to the high powered flourescents in the kitchen. After we were moved to a better table, I saw that the menu had very few veggie options. We had a simple salad & marinara pasta. Believe it or not, both were horrid. The pasta was so soggy, I couldn't really believe there were noodles in all that mush. The salad was so over dressed- with what tasted like a mustard dressing as opposed to the balsamic it claimed to be- that we couldn't eat a second bite. The one plus- great service. The wait staff was lovely, recommended a great wine, and promplty took the offending salad off the bill. Pros: Service Cons: lighting, atmosphere, food more

wanted to love it... 1/19/2008

the service was wonderful, our waiter attentive and gave a great presentation and nice on top of it! the food however was really not good. we ordered the roasted wild boar stew and the spinach gnocchi. the roasted stew tasted like cafeteria food with too much cinnamon and and the gnocchi could have been a lean cuisine microwaveable dish. bad flavors! we were so disappointed. Pros: service Cons: the food! too expensive too have such poor flavor combos more

Very good italian food in a cool neighborhood 7/23/2007

This is a great place to eat. My wife and I have been there a few times and really enjoy the food and the people. The staff are very friendly, knowledgeable and most of them seem to have been there for some time (which is generally a pretty good sign). They have a pretty good wine selection, mostly Italian wines. Pros: Great location, fantastic food knowlegable staff Cons: not kid friendly, parking can be a challenge more

Amazing! 4/26/2007

The Asteroid Cafe is a gem! The service is outstanding and food beyond compare. The Asteroid experience includes refreshing ambiance, fabulous and friendly service, and fresh ingredients. We dined there tonight in the midst of a major Seattle fundraiser and were still treated as though we were the only diners present. We dine out often and would recommend The Asteroid above many of the most famous Seattle restaurants. You can't beat the Fremont neighborhood and this intimate dining experience. Pros: Ambience, service more

Incredible food, friendly staff, great ambiance 4/22/2007

The Asteroid is incredible, my favorite Seattle restaurant, bar none. I?m a former Seattle resident who now lives an inconvenient 160 miles away, but I regularly make the 2-1/2 hour drive just to eat at the Asteroid. I?ll be sitting at home, obsessing about, say, the Penne Sorrentina al Forno (roasted eggplant, sun-dried tomatoes, all perfectly seasoned in a perfect sauce, baked with a crust of smoked mozzarella cheese?), and next thing I know I?m in my car. When I arrive, I always feel welcomed. The host will ask me how my drive was. I?ll have a choice of sitting at the long wooden bar, at one of the many spacious tables, or at the counter flanking the kitchen (a fascinating spot from which to watch culinary artists at work). My server will invariably be friendly, enthusiastic, and attentive. Bruschette will appear promptly (with various toppings ? I like the chickpea best). I might follow the bruschette with Insalata di Spinaci, a mouth-watering blend of fresh spinach, toasted walnuts, and creamy goat cheese. And then it?s on to the main course ? if not the Penne Sorrentina al Forno, then one of the many pasta dishes or the meat or seafood specialties of the house. All of these can be complemented with an amazing choice of wines (Marlin, the proprietor, has visited wineries in Italy, has had extensive conversations with winemakers there, and could probably give a course on wines). And then, to top it all off, I?ll decide that yes I do have room for tiramisu, or creme brulee, or raspberry-and-whip cream-topped chocolate cake? Wow. I can?t wait to get back there? Maybe, next time, for lunch AND dinner (they?re now open for lunch, too). Pros: Unbelievably good food, friendly and knowledgeable staff, comfortable ambience, great choices for vegetarians more

Awesome Food and Ambiance 4/22/2007

We ate there last Friday. I hadn't been to the new place in Fremont, and I have to say I was taken a little aback when I first entered. I was used to the cozy little Wallingford place, and this was way swankier. After a minute though, I was over my shock and began to really like the new digs with it's copper bar and soft tuscan wood textures. My boyfriend ate the salssicia, just like the old place, it was about the best pasta I''ve ever had. I tried the pork salmon special, and it was perfect, nice and medium rare ( I hate overcooked fish). Our friends got the mixed grill. Steak, pork, chicken and polenta and greens. It was enough for an army and all plattered up family style. They were quite selfish so I only got a little polenta. Next time we're going for that deal. For dessert we shared the carmelized pear bread pudding, Whoa... it was out of this world! WOW! With some kind of bourbon sauce, Yummy! I'm definitely a fan of the new Asteroid! Pros: food, service, ambiance, wine selection Cons: hard to find, tucked into big building more

Food was good. Value, not so much. 4/12/2007

Decided to stop in to see what the place was like; never made it in when it was located in Wallingford. The food - good, and interesting ingredients; didn't feel like I got my money's worth, though. The wines by the glass selection needs more options, although what we had was very nice, there aren't enough local wines on the menu. I realize it's an Italian place, but I prefer local foods over ones that are flown, shipped, or trucked in from far away lands. Service was fine, although slow, we weren't in a hurry so that didn't bother so much. Entrees were brought out before the salads were finished - bad. One literally glaring issue was that I was forced to sit through the whole meal with the bright, white lights of the kitchen striking me practically blind, which completely destroyed any romantic ambiance of the place. It was totally distracting and annoying. If I want to see everything that goes on in the kitchen, I'll ask, thank you very much. I would not eat there again if that was still the case. Pros: Unique dishes. Friendly staff. Cons: Prices seem high. Bad lighting. more

Inconsistent quality and service 3/13/2007

I've been to Asteroid twice recently -- once with my husband and once with a group. The first time I went was better than the second. The first time, service was polite and attentive. My husband and I both enjoyed our meals. He had the osso bucco and I had the risotto. Neither was amazing, but both were very good. We returned with friends we were treating to dinner for a celebration. I was embarassed we picked the place. Although we had a reservation, and the place was not full, service was agonizingly sloooow at 7 pm on a Saturday night. We ordered one starter for the table, which arrived reasonably promptly, and then waited and waited for our entrees. It took about an hour for them to be served. The waitress came by, deposited my pasta on the table, said nothing, and walked away. We had no idea what was going on with the other meals or when to expect them. Several minutes later, two more entrees arrived, but my husband still had no food! Again, no explanation or apology. Finally, after a few more minutes, we all had our dinners. Our friends enjoyed their osso bucco (which, by the way, the kitchen only had 2 of left at about 7:30!). My seafood fettucine was not overly flavorful, and had a skimpy amount of seafood for the price. My husband said his steak was average. The waitress was abrupt, at one point interrupting one of our guests who was speaking. The tab for one appetizer, four entrees, and one bottle of wine came to over $200. I felt ripped off and embarassed by the whole experience. I probably won't be back. more

Excellent food and politics 1/16/2007

The best Italian food I've had in the city and with a great staff to serve it. Plus Marlin is always friendly and willing to chat about wine, liberal politics, and grub. I have never been disappointed and I love the new location. Much more room and also space for live music. A must eat at place in Fremont! Pros: Ambience, live music, wine Cons: parking is difficult more

Amazing food & wine offerings, friendly staff, great location 10/12/2006

Asteroid has the most well-executed Italian fare in town, and an absolutely amazing wine list. Ask your waiter or Marlin (the owner who's always around) for wine recs...I've never been disappointed. After you're seated you'll get a delicious chickpea bruchetta to start off. The appetizers and salads are great. The main entrees/specials are delicious, but I always wander my way back to Asteriod's pasta offerings. They're absolutely devine. Every member of the staff is friendly and attentive, and it definitely feels like a casual, local place where you can eat great food with friends. Pros: Food, Wine, Location Cons: Noisy when it's busy, Parking can be challenging more

Amazing Pasta! 6/2/2006

We visited the new location of the Asteroid Cafe last night, and we were very impressed. My puttanesca was the best I've ever had bar none. They were very willing to cater to the vegetarians in our group, but they also had a wide variety of meat dishes to choose from. For our birthday person they brought out a wonderful chocolate torte. We will definitely be back as regulars. Pros: Great food, Nice Ambiance, Good Bar more
