NOT HANDICAPPED-FRIENDLY. I went to 6/10/2012

NOT HANDICAPPED-FRIENDLY. I went to this restaurant yesterday with my elderly parents. My father is 92, requires a walker for ambulation, and has a handicapped license plate. Ashiana's has 2 handicapped parking spaces with a ramp between them right in front of the restaurant, but when we went there right around 5:30 (opening time), BOTH parking spaces were blocked by ONE car that was parked so as to completely block the ramp. I inquired inside and was told that the car was there because they (the restaurant) were going to be loading some food in the car. So instead of being able to use the handicapped parking spots and ramp, we had to get my father out of the car in the middle of the parking lot and then lift him up onto the sidewalk over the curb. I never saw anything loaded into that car until we had almost finished our meal about an hour later, when 2 quite able-bodied workers finally walked out with a large white cooler and put it in the car. At one point earlier than that the car was moved so that it took up only one of the handicapped parking places and didn't block the ramp any longer, but as my mother pointed out to them, this was still illegal. Anyway, they never cared. more

Not to bad 4/5/2011

We went there after a long time. The service was awful, the quatities were meager , the prices way-way too much- this is daylight robbery. On top of that we had items on the bill that we did not even order. There are much better Indian eating places in town. Don't waste your money on this. We really regretted going there. more

This palce is great! 3/15/2010

This place has gotten new management so if you went maybe about 2 years ago you have to try it again. They are a lot more professional now and the food is incredibly rich. It's delicious! I love their chicken tikka! The waiters are all very helpful. Very rarely do you have to flag one down. It's a buffet so don't expect for them to wait on you hand and foot people! There is a separate appetizer bar with dessert on one side, and a main course bar on the opposite wall. You can of course order from the menu if you'd like. (I'm not sure if they do the buffet setup all day or just during lunch hours) Who cares! The food is great you'll come back with a belly that hurts because it's so full! Pros: Mango Mousse is fantastic! Full bar more

Worst customer service ever 1/24/2010

We planned to go to a new indian restaurant which was unfortunately closed and ended up going to Ashiana. The waiter did not even ask us for any drink sto order instead he just left the beverage menu on table and left. We ordered malai kofta and starter, but we were not served nan which comes with the dish instead we just got onion kulcha we ordered. We were just served water once and no body bothered to refill until when we asked for it and the waiter greeted us with you want more water. We even did not get warm towels as was provided to some elite customers. When my friend called who recommended me there called them he was told that this was the first complaint he received. I just want to know who else had a similar experience at this dinner. Pros: Good only for the interiors Cons: Ordinary food, Horrible service more

Great Food 9/29/2009

I took a large group there with our British and Irish Expat group and they were wonderful they gave us a private room and we had separate checks.\r \r The food is outstanding but expensive, its the best chicken Madras in Houston! hands down, but its also the most expensive so its a treat to come here.\r \r London Sizzler rocks for chickenTikka Masala, and I still like Shiva but the service is less desirable in both places so you might pay a bit more at Ashiana but its very good. Pros: Great Indian Food, Service is pretty good too Cons: Area far out there and its expensive more

Best Indian food in Houston!! 2/19/2009

We have been going to Ashianas for years even though it is not close to our house. We were on that side of town with friends this weekend & decided to place a to-go order. Got home anxious to dig in. We were not disappointed & even suprised all over again how amazing the food was. Our favorite is the Vegitarian Feast, but we also had the Chicken Korma this time and it was so wonderful, we were actully moaning and groaning with every bite. The portions were perfect and there were tons of leftovers to enjoy the next day. If you have not been, you must go. You will not be disappointed. Pros: Best Inian food in Houston & worth the drive. Great wine list. Cons: they are doing a bit of remodeling, but don't let this stop you. more

Horrid Service, Expensive Food 7/19/2008

You know I had really high hopes for this place. The restaurant was elegantly decorated. So I figured I was going to get a meal at a high end classy Indian restaurant. The service was truly awful. I feel like we were being ignored. We didn't get menus until I asked the bus boy to get us some. He went and asked the host. We didn't get drinks until I once again had to ask the bus boy to get the host.\r \r I'm not a restaurant snob or anything like that, but for the prices they were asking for, I except damn good service. Over food came out slow. Service was slow to sub par. The food was average. You could get much better food in the hilcroft and harwin area for 1/3 of the cost. our bill was about $150 for 3 people. This includes 3 alcoholic drinks.\r \r In conclusion don't waste your time or money here. Pros: Decent food no line Cons: crappy service and experiance, too exp more

Good Food, but not like it was under Kiran's regime 4/19/2008

I eat lunch at Ashiana quite often, and while it's not cheap, it's not too expensive. I hadn't eaten dinner at Ashiana in over 3 years, but when my wife told me she would take me anywhere I wanted for my birthday, I chose Ashiana. She doesn't particulary care for Indian (but she likes Kiran's), so I didn't want to miss my chance for traditional Indian.\r \r The food was ""good"" not great, but no better than the lunch buffet. There were two couples and our dinner tab ran over $170 BEFORE the wine. It's way too expensive for what you get. The meat dishes were small, not enough to share even a little bit, the vegs were good but limited. They charged for the nan, the deserts were substandard, and the service was poor at best.\r \r In the old days, you the food was of higher quality and you had servers all over you. Kiran herself would always stop by to make sure everything was good and make you feel at home. Those days are gone.\r \r Needless to say, I should have selected Kiran's, but I wanted to go back to Ashiana at dinner for old time's sake. From this point forward, Ashiana will only be a lunch choice. Pros: Food, Wine Lists Cons: Prices, Portions, Service more

Disappointing! Elegant atmosphere but unimpressive, overpriced food 9/17/2007

Back in the days, I had heard great things about this place...so when I finally went there for dinner, I was very disappointed. The owners (and presumably the chef) have changed, ending the golden era of this restaurant. The chicken tikka masala tasted like something between creamy tomato basil soup and ketchup. The chicken was over cooked and too salty. The Saag paneer was bland. Even the naan bread was below-par. I normally wipe the plate clean when I go out for Indian food, but this time, there was plenty of food left over, and I didn't take any home in a doggy bag. I was so disappointed! I think the new owners should change the name of the restaurant so that diners like me will not get it confused with the old, great Ashiana restaurant. Pros: Ambience Cons: poor food more

Good food but don't expect much else. 7/22/2007

Well the food was good. As for the service let me tell you. We ordered a certain bottle of wine listed and the ""Wine Director"" brings out a completely different wine and even grape varietal. I ordered lightly sweet and he brings out bone dry. Then after I said I would look over the wine list again he leaves the bottle on my table and walks away. So then I ordered a certain Pouilly-Fuisse and the ""Wine Director"" brings me a completely different chateau? I very nicely said that was the wrong producer and he says well if you don't like it I'll get you something else?? I can look past the sloppy dress of the ""Wine Director"" but not his lack of true sercive. I've never had a more difficult time ordering wine. Wine Spectator Award????????????? Pros: Good food. Cons: Bad service especially wine service. more

Refined and elegant 6/27/2007

Ashiana is by far the best Indian restaurant I have dined at in Houston. The wine list, ambiance and food are superb. If you like an elegant, refined atmosphere with courteous servers and award-winning cuisine, you will not be disappointed. The chicken or prawn Madras is a favorite menu item. We live on the west side of Houston between Richmond and Katy but it is worth the drive to dine at Ashiana - we will be back! Pros: wonderful atmosphere and courteous staff Cons: location more

Worse indian food EVER! 3/13/2007

My husband and I are big indian food fans. We recently moved from the UK and were looking for a very good indian restaurant, just like the one we used to visit back in Bristol, UK. We were recommended to this restaurant and were so dissapointed it was out of this world!\r Food was bland, flavourless and so not indian.... We asked for Korma and Tikka Massala, Korma looked more like chicken in white wine sauce (sauce was ivory color, instead of the orangy color I am used to), Tikka Massala was like eating chicken in tomato sauce, it wasn't spicy at all! \r I will simply not go ever again and would definately not recommend even to my worse enemy! And don't even get me started on the prices! $19 for a Chicken Korma ?????????????? Not even in the poshest place in the UK!! Pros: Nothing that I can recall Cons: Flavor, price, and many other things! more

BETTER THEN THE BEST 11/20/2006

I have been a big fan of Ashiana from the first visit there. My friends had taken me there and raved about the restaurant. Recently I took some VIP guest there and we had a wonderfull time. The service is always great . Great food , Great management. \r Never been disappointed. Will keep going there. Pros: Ambience, Food, Wine List, Service, Location more

Beautiful Restaurant 11/1/2006

This is such a nice place to eat Indian food. I love Indian cuisine, ever since I toured UK(!!). It seems I am not the first to learn how to eat Indian food from UK. The Brits love Indian food, and If I may say so it looks like all of them visit Ashiana. The place is buzzing, and it really is a place to be. Thier Lunch Buffet is fabulous, the lines are long, and the parking is full, but it is soooo good, and worth it. I visited just this afternoon for lunch and they were packed with people, with a line out of the door. The Owner is always on the floor and I really think that adds a personal touch. The prices are reasonable, and the Buffet has been the same price for the last 4 yrs. I do not understand what the other reviewer was complaining about. There is nothing ordinary about this restaurant, right from thier service, to the ambience to the personal touch guests recieve. The hot towels at the end of the meal, even at lunch really proves it!!! Must try..the Chicken tikka masala, Lamb roghan josh....The best Naan in the USA....I can eat there everyday!!! Pros: Good Brunch, Wine List, Ambience more

Best Service and Food!!! 10/31/2006

Ashiana is my favorite restaurant. I really think they serve the best Naan ever. The Lunch Buffet is fabulous. Most days, it is extremely busy, and after tasting the food, you will know the reason. Unlike many other restaurants Ashiana does not soak thier food in butter and oil. The food is light, tasty and is flavorful.\r Dinner was a very nice experience, when we visited over this past weekend. The owner stopped by and greeted us. She recommended the Mushroom Masala, and the Chicken Phall(for one of our daring Brit guests). Both were extremely good, I must say!She was extremely polite and our guests were very impressed. The servers were discreet and did not make us feel rushed, nor were they pushy or arrogant.\r I have visited every single Indian restaurant in Houston, but I always revisit Ashiana, especially when it is a special occasion, or I have to entertain business associates, as believe me, this is a place where you want to be. You can be assured there will be no dissapointments where, service, ambience and primarily food is concerned. The rates may be a bit pricey, but the quality associated with it should not be overlooked. There is absolutely no point in sacrificing good quality, to lower prices(as the previous reviewer suggested). My request to the Owner will be, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!! WE LOVE ASHIANA!!! Pros: Great ambience, Good Food!! Cons: None!! more

Another mediocre Indian Restaurant. 10/27/2006

I read all the great reviews and went to this restaurant with my wife, being an Indian I was totally disappointed with the quality of the food and mediocre service. Food is below average and Ashiana is like any other below average Indian restaurant, there is no reason to be excited about this Indian restaurant. Only an Indian can tell how good or bad Indian restaurants are. Entries are too pricy and even buffet was pricy; I think it is not worth the price. Ambience is good. Ambience matters only when food is good otherwise it is of no use. I hope the owner of this restaurant reads this review and change the chef who cooks according to the prices it displays on the menu otherwise reduce the prices and at least serve good quality Indian food. I would not recommend at least to others based on my experience. Pros: Ambience Cons: Below Average Food and Bad Service. more
