our recent dinner 6/1/2005

We were at Ana Mandara for dinner during one of my recent trip to San Francisco. We were early for our reservation, but got seated promptly. The ambience was nice and the service was great. The food was too expensive though. We had soft-shelled crab for appetizer, which costed $16 and consisted of one crab cut in half. The garlic noodle came without the Chinese chives or bean sprouts. My beef tenderloin was too salty. We had the mango spring rolls for desserts, which was good. Other than that, it was generally an OK experience. I'm not sure if I would want to come back again. Pros: nice ambience, great service Cons: horrible parking, expensive food more

Dinner review 5/26/2005

The food tastes good, but is very overpriced. None of the items on the menu is specialty item, but they are charging a lot for it. Their ""crepes"" and ""noodles"" can be purchased from any asian markets for less than a dollar or two. Ambience is excellent, and the service is not bad. They got one of our orders wrong, but it was corrected very quickly. more

LA Style with SF food! 5/18/2005

There aren't many concept restaurants done up in LA style in SF. This is one of them. It's opulent. Other than Gary Danko, one of the only good reasons to head to the Wharf to eat. An inspired cocktail list, and healthy wine list make this a good choice for foodies and winos alike! It's on the expensive side, but given the presentation and the taste, it's well worth it. Lobster ravioli? Wow. Calamari with crushed peanuts? Yum! Duck breast with banana blossom? Outstanding. I'm getting hungry again just writing about it! Go there! more

Pleasantly surprised 5/16/2005

Ate here for lunch. Restaurant nearly empty. I was pleasantly surprised that a restaurant in the touristy Fisherman's wharf area is serving such tasty food. Especially when considering it's owned by celebrities. The dungeness crab soup is delicious as is the mango soup dessert. Those are 2 dishes not to miss. Entrees were less impressive though solid. Reasonable pricing for the SF area as well. Will definitely return. more

Never been so insulted at a restaurant! 5/1/2005

My girlfriend and I went to Ana Mandara for dinner. When I went to restroom the waiter ask my girlfriend why she was with a guy like me"! The worst thing was that my GF didn't tell me until we were gone and I tipped this jerk 20%! He is lucky that I did not get him fired. I did talk to the manger and he basically said tough, nice management. I will NEVER Recommend this place to any of my friends or Corporate clients, and for that matter I will go out of my way to suggest against it! I highly suggest NOT going to this sub-pair restaurant. San Francisco has too many great restaurant to give this one any time or money for terrible service and "OK" food. Pros: None Cons: Service, Food, Management more

well-polished 4/2/2005

The dark, wood interior was almost sensual. If you're on a date, though, don't get seated in a booth unless you're WELL over six feet tall (they're very large). Otherwise, it was quite nice. Food featured complex, rich flavors and very tender meat. The server, though quite terse and hard to find at times, made good recommendations. Pros: dark, romantic Cons: not enough servers more

A bit overrated, but good ambience 3/21/2005

The ambience here is better than the food. If you want good Vietnamese food, go to a hole in the wall, this place will make you pay a ton. But, the atmosphere here is very cool and hip so go if you want drinks and want to hang out. more

Amazing 1/22/2005

The ambience and architecture is gorgeous, just as if you were swept away into a french-vietamese villa. I've always had drinks here after work- sipping on their glorious cocktails. Recently, I had the enjoyment of eating here with my boyfriend. The food was everything we expected. Seared foie gras, papaya salad with prawns and jellyfish, striped bass ceviche, cripy rolls with shrimp and crab. If you can't get a table, dine at the bar. They offer their full menu there, plus you can snuggle up with your sweetie on a cozy sofa tucked away in the corner as you sip on mango mojitos. And weekend jazz makes it all the better. Pros: food, ambience/style, service more

Ana Mandara: AVOID 1/20/2005

During Dine About Town, I brought a date to the highly rated Ana Mandara. Our waiter made two appearances during the meal, perhaps unimpressed by our less than $50 wine order. I ordered the restaurant week prix-fixe, my date ordered off the menu. While eating the entrees (I've had better food at Chinese buffets), we heard the waiter mentioning specials he hadn't bothered to mention to us. After our entrees were cleared, a dessert arrived for me, but my date was never given a dessert menu and neither of us were invited to order after dinner drinks. Plus we were not even given silverware for dessert. Why this restaurant enjoys a high ranking is beyond me. Perhaps the proximity to Fisherman's Wharf attracts diners unaccustomed to the fine dining San Francisco offers. I would suggest if you find yourself at Ana Mandara, hail a cab and go someplace else. Pros: Decor Cons: , Bland food, Way overpriced more
