Very disappointing 2/28/2009

I had high expectations of this place due to the high reviews. I am a fan of Turkish food and have eaten at several other Turkish restaurants so I was excited to try this one. I was very disappointed. The appetizer and the two dishes we got were served luke warm. Both main dishes appeared to have been made the day before and then heated up. The flavors were bland and boring. The beef for the beef kabob had no flavor. The Turkish beer was the only thing my boyfriend or I thought tasted good the entire night. Our waitress was nice. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Pros: Beer Cons: Food more

affordable authentic Turkish food, cozy dining, and great Turkish wine 12/23/2008

I love Turkish food and I have been to other Turkish restaurants but it was more Mediterranean/American/Turkish food but A La Turka Turkish Kitchen was great authentic Turkish food and the service was great. I think this is a great place to go with friends and the portions are very large for sharing and the price was very decent. It is also a great date place as it is a cozy and very romantic setting, Pros: everything was pretty great..the food, the price, the atmosphere Cons: I like my food sizzling hot more

There's nothing like bringing culture to Chicago! 7/24/2008

First off the atmosphere was cozy, warm, bringing just the type of feelings I like to have when wining and dining. The ambiance was delightful with dark colors and had a very romantic feel. Secondly, the staff was phenomenal. I personally work in the industry of customer service and they are by far a 10. Thirdly, the food was deliciously flavorful. I ordered the Chicken Kabob and boy did I get my moneys worth! I love dining at restaurants with different cuisines. A La Turka brings culture and diversity to Chicago and I'm glad to have such a great restaurant in this city! Go and check it out! more

Very authentic! 7/24/2008

I recently dined at A La Turka on July 12th, and having a husband of Turkish background, I had high expectations. And I have to admit, A La Turka's cuisine is truly authentic. The evening was very enjoyable from our first bite to the belly dancing show. The food was very tasty as well. The staff was friendly and efficient. I would definitely recommend A La Turka to anyone who is willing to experience true Turkish cuisine and culture! Pros: Belly dancing, food, authenticity more

Stay Away! 7/22/2008

Used to be a fun place with decent food\r \r Was there recently with a group of 35 on a Saturday evening and it was a complete waste of money\r New group of belly dancers that were horrible and danced 3 songs and left.\r Besides our table, there were only 3 other tables and the place was empty\r \r As soon as the dancers were finished the staff cleared our tables and at 10:00, exactly, the lights were turned on telling us to leave\r \r A very bad experience Pros: None Cons: Entertainment, very average food, very poor atmosphere more

Avoid anytime! 7/20/2008

I'm Turkish and, naturally, love Turkish food. Of course I wasn't expecting my mother's cooking, but I was expecting something at least half-decent. There were made-up dishes in the menu. If this restaurant were to open in Turkey with the exact same menu, the owner would be lynched within several hours of opening by the general public. How does anyone expect authentic Turkish food when the whole staff is Mexican. The food had no taste, and I felt embarassed in front of my guest. Our server's response to my dissatisfaction over my meal was simply ""oh, okay."" The loud-mouthed owner was prancing around the restaurant and was trying his best to promote the American belly-dancer. As if all of these weren't enough to make my visit a complete disaster, the entrees are outrageously over-priced. This ""restaurant"" doesn't even deserve the one star I had to give it. \r p.s For those who've been here before, please don't give up on Turkish food. Try it elsewhere. Pros: baking their own bread Cons: the rest more

We had a great time! 5/17/2007

My husband and I had a great dinner at A La Turka! We went on a Thursday night and the place was pretty busy, but we were seated immediately and the service was quite good. We had the hot appetizer platter to start -- Turkish pizza, zucchini pancakes, and phyllo rolls -- all delicious! For dinner, I had the stuffed baby eggplant, and my husband had the Turkish ravioli; both dishes were really flavorful and quite tasty. The accompanying bread and rice were also really good. We were too full for dessert but were pretty tempted by the baklava. We will almost certainly come back. Please don't let the bad reviews deter you -- it's a beautiful restaurant with yummy food! more

worst turkish restaurant i have been to so far 5/4/2007

This is probably the worst turkish restaurant i have been to in usa, or wait, the worst restaurant period. This place pays more attention to the belly dancers they have on the weekends rather than to their food and to their customers. To simply put it, it was loud, the food took forever to get to my table, it was cold, no flavor, it seemeled like i was chewing on a piece of leather than a piece of meat. Pros: nothing really Cons: everything really. more

Mediocre Food, Bad service, Noisy, Expensive. 4/21/2007

We do not recommend this restaurant. The food, the service and the ambiance were disappointing. The food was mediocre at best and after waiting an hour for our meal, it wasn't even hot. The waitress never came once to explain the long wait for the food and we couldn't find her to even complain. The place was extremely noisy as the host makes a big production out of raffling out $15 coupons for dinner to be used on your return visit. This is followed by three mediocre belly dancers which is a lot for a place that small where there is barely enough room for the waiters and waitresses to get by and the music is so loud that all conversation is suspended for the time that the belly dancers are performing. After 30 minutes of belly dancing, the host leads the entire restaurant in singing happy birthday and several more birthday songs. There are very good middle eastern restaurants in Chicago with better food, better service and where you can sit down and have a conversation with your meal. This frankly, is not one of them. Pros: exotic decor, accomodates large groups Cons: bad food, bad service, overpriced, loud more

Horrible service - don't waste your time 4/7/2007

After passing by this restaurant several times, we decided to try it. Unfortunately the hostess told us they were booked for the night but instead try the bar upstairs and order there since they share the same kitchen. After going upstairs we decided to get carry out and confirmed with the waiter that they did allow carry out orders. We placed our order for food and after almost 1 HOUR of waiting our waiter told us that they in fact could not do carryout and that our food had NEVER even been cooked! We expressed our shock and displeasure that this waiter did not tell us this an hour ago and he agreed to get the kitchen to make and deliver our food immediately. After another 15-20 mins, with seemingly no effort by the waiter to check on the progress and still no food in sight we ended up leaving. Service at this place is horrible and not worth anyone's time. Cons: non existant service more

American delly dancers, anyone? 3/22/2007

The restaurant serves great Turkish and Mediterranean food in the city of Chicago. On weekend evenings they have belly dancing (local belly dancers) with little games and giveaways. We won a bottle of Turkish wine on our second visit there. It gets extremely loud during the dancing and games and they could tone things down a little bit. The restaurant is a little cramped which gets worse as the belly dancers traipse around the tables. The food and service though is very good and I would recommend trying the kabobs and the appetizer platter. more

good hookah, average atmosphere 2/26/2007

The hookah here is very good, and not too expensive. The service is also good, at least in the upstairs lounge. Our bartender was friendly and attentive, and he checked on our hookah for us occasionally. The atmosphere upstairs is that of a typical bar, beer signs and all...not really what you look for when you're smoking hookah. But it's still a good place to relax and hang out with friends without spending too much money. more
