People around here rave about Foster's Market. I think it is just okay. If you are at all picky, this is not your place. It's pretty much upscale deli style food- soups, sandwiches, and then a few entree specials of the day. But instead of chicken noodle soup, Foster's would have Roasted Vegetable Bisque. That said, the items that sounded appealing to me and I ordered were very good. So I can see why someone who is adventurous about food would like this place. If you or your kids are picky, go to panera. (Oh, Foster's is kind of expensive too, for what you get).

The Carolina Inn is truly a beautiful and comfortable place to stay. Other than the wonderful service and cozy atmosphere, the main draw is the convenience of the location. It is located on UNC chapel hill's campus and is one block away from Franklin Street (main street in this college town). The Inn also would be a nice location for a wedding reception or any party. They host many special events like teas. If you would prefer to hang out in mesh shorts and a tshirt, then you probably don't want to stay here. It can be a bit stuffy and proper. If you have the money to stay here or if someone else is paying, then it is really a nice place.

I would have rated the zoo 5 stars because it is one of the better zoos I've seen. However, the food is very very bad. Minimal choices and what they do have is not at all good- and of course, like all parks, it's overpriced. Bring your own food. Now the zoo itself is fantastic. They have a whole range of animals that one would expect to see at a zoo and they do an excellent job of trying to set up natural looking habitats. Our favorite was the kangaroo that literally is about 5 feet away with just a small rope separating you from it. Bring your good walking shoes- it's all walking and there are hills. You can ride a bus back to the parking lot.

If you are like me and have a child who has a huge meltdown during haircuts, then you should take them to JJ's. They have lots of excellent distractions. The kids can sit in cars, watch TV, etc...all while getting a quick, good haircut. I think it's around $15 which is high for a kid cut, but worth it. It's also worth the drive if you do not live nearby. You can bring your own video if your kid likes one in particular. Top notch.

The Artscenter in Carrboro has a very wide variety of art classes- anything from culinary to visual to dramatic. I only have personal experiences with a couple of the kids' programs but from the descriptions of some of the adult programs- I am very tempted to try one of the classes out sometime. In addition to the ongoing classes, they also have one-time events. Check out their schedule. All of the kids' programs we have attended have been excellent. Highly recommended.

I think this dance studio finally went out of business, so maybe this is a non-issue of a warning. I fortunately took a recommendation from a friend NOT to enroll my daughter here for ballet or camp. They, all of the sudden, closed their doors and anyone who had paid for camps were plain out of luck. So, if they do re-open, I would avoid this place. There are a few other dance class options in Chapel Hill that get rave reviews.

When we lived nearby, this was our regular dry cleaning service. They have a drive up window which is key if you have 3 kids buckled into carseats. The staff has always been very pleasant and friendly. One of their tenets is to promote environmentally friendly dry cleaning which is a nice plus. I would highly recommend them if you are looking for good dry cleaning service.

I'm not sure I would ever have gone to this gift store if it wasn't right there on Franklin Street and right next to one of my favorite restaurants. Anyway, it's a great little gift store. Yes, it's pricey, as you would expect. But they definitely carry a nice line of unique gifts. I would recommend this store if you are looking for a gift for a hard-to-buy-for person.

Interesting concept here. Everything is blue. I have to admit, they have very very nice stuff. In particular I love the blue glass bottles and vases- really cool. I have perused this store on several occasions and have bought something small once as a gift. I wonder how they are still in business, honestly. They have a very convenient location in Carr Mill Mall but I would never have gone out of my way for this store.

This is one of the better resale shops in the area. They have a good selection of household goods - especially if you are just starting out. They are conveniently located somewhat near the post office on Shannon Road. And obviously Habitat is a worthwhile cause, so I feel good about spending money there.
