maybe this was good when it was called udupi .. 4/30/2012

We went for Saturday buffet around 9pm. We actually wanted to go to udupi so spent 10 mins trying to find it. Later found out, its now called ""passage to india"". The food was cold and some of the dishes were almost empty. We got dosa and nann on the table. It was the worst dosa I have ever had. The frozen dosa you get from indian store is better than this. There was paani poori in the buffet but the water for pani poori was really bad. there was chat papdi in the buffet but it was almost gone. I tried, vegetable korma, bombay alloo, rasam, pakora. Everything was bad. Maybe I had very high expectation for this place because it has good reviews but we were very disappointed. We won't go back again. more

Now Called Passage To India 5/24/2009

I went to go to Udupi and found it was now called Passage to India but it hasn't changed at all really. The food was truly amazing and did not upset my stomach like Indian food can at times. This is THE PLACE to go for vegetarian Indian food. Pros: Yummy more

very forgettable 10/6/2007

udupi is a far cry from authentic south indian cuisine. what really puts you off is the non existent service. if you are lucky to get a waiter, they are inattentive, slow and rude. its almost as if they dont want to work. the quality of the food is not great. i disagree that people in India are inefficient. there are several restaurants in India where people are very attentive, and the food is good. Places like udupi in Indianapolis, in fact give a very distorted view of what Indian restaurants are like. Americans would probably end up believing that Indian restaurants or Indians in India are inhospitable and unfriendly after going to udupi. There is absolutely no reason why sub standard service, quality and taste should be marketed as Indian whether as home or abroad.\r Pros: parking Cons: cant think of a compelling one more

not that great!!!!! 5/4/2007

this plcace is alright. The waiters are not enthusistic about working...they probably forget this is the US and not India where people are known for inefficiency and lack of enthusisam to work !!! Also the path to the rest. is awful......we have to pass very unfriendly Gujju's who stand behind the various counters esp. the video and music section. Awful customer service at the grocery store as well as the music and movie section!! Please guys remember this is the US not Ahmedabad or Baroda!!!!!!!!!! No manners at all! Pros: tasty food Cons: poor service and ambience more

Champion food 2/14/2007

I dare anyone to tell me about a better South Indian food establishment in Indianapolis.\r Their service is NOT slow as mentioned in another review. As a matter of fact some of the staff have taken time to get to know my wife, son, and myself. Their service is fast, courteous, and sometimes they bring you surprises.\r \r When you compare the cost to taste/variety..........there is no comparison in Indianapolis, Indian food or not.\r This place is the bomb. Pros: the list would be too long......every single item of food i have eaten there has been delicious Cons: none really, will Udupi deliver???that would be great more

very good dosai... 8/14/2006

Udipi is one of best places to have South Indian Veg Food. We had dosai and we loved it. they have a lot of choices for dosai specially. But their dahi vada is not so good...it smells of coconut oil and the taste bad. Well its a quite plcace to have lunch or dinner specially. But their service is very slow and u have to wait a long before u get your food. Pros: very good Food Cons: very slow service more

The best Chaat in town! 5/16/2006

After the demise of the much loved, India Chaat House, I was so excited to find that Udupi has a Chaat Buffet on Sunday nights. All the favorites... dosas, samosas, fried califlower, fried peppers, curries, sambor, pav bahji, channa chaat (you mix it), lots of desserts and much more! Hot chai is always on tap and the staff is inviting. This past weekend, there was a special Mother's Day Buffet with many extra items inclucing: naan pizza and a frozen basil seed dessert/beverage. My only regret is that I did not bring my mother! Pros: great food, great variety, healthy choices more

Had better food before 12/21/2005

The restaurant may be good for people who have not tasted authentic South Indian cuisine before. But the food certainly does not come anywhere near what Udupi chefs in India are famous for. Udupi is a place renowned for an epicurean delight. Udupi cafe proves to be a damp squib. The only positive thing is they have borrowed the good name of Udupi. more

I <3 Udupi 11/2/2005

My friend and I go to Udupi once a week. We love it. The food is awesome. All the dishes are vegetarian but they also offer vegan dishes. And the staff is always friendly (and will point out what is vegan-""fine""). The buffet is great, and they offer punch cards for the buffet - I think every tenth one is free. But it is inexpensive anyways. Pros: excellent food, vegan/vegetarian, inexpensive more

best buffet 11/2/2005

awesome vegetarian food! It is best to go to the buffet but sunday nights are great too. The staff is friendly and the food is the best Pros: inexpensive, friendly staff, excellent food more

Udupi is the best 11/1/2005

This is hands down the best Indian Restraunt in Indianapolis, and most probably the best all-vegetarian restraunt as well. The buffet always has a wide variety of vegetarian and vegan options which are always delisch! The staff is also very helpful and accomodating. Do yourself a favor and try it out for the best in South Indian cusine. Pros: awesome, awesome, awesome more
