if you ask me to recommend a greek restaurant (and you should because i'm quite familiar with restaurants), i'd recommend yiassoo. yiassoo started with this awesome greek couple on bascom avenue in campbell back in the 1980s and expanded a bit through the 1990s but then unfortunately receded, perhaps because people just plain need to eat more greek food. at the same time, those critiqueing _me_ will argue that yiassoo fast food joint, while thea is an upscale, trendy, well-decorated eatery with the safe great chef alex padilla as consuelo across the street, and they're right. i never said otherwise, have i? no.
thea has pretty traditional greek cuisine, although they try to modernize and evolve some of it. however, for better or worse, it's still pretty traditional. really, i'm not saying that as a bad thing. however, i'll say this: for the kind of food that you get and the quality of the food, i really think thea is overpriced. sure, it's got great atmosphere, great decor, great outdoor seating, great opportunities to soak in the whole santana row culture, but... well, yeah, it's just plain overpriced. (the wine is really expensive.)
right now, if you asked me for a favourite restaurant in santana row, i might say amber, consuelo, or straits.
