The Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose is fun in every way- Even the building it is housed in is architecturally unique and painted purple!
This is a great place to take your kids and at the time I went , they even offered free admission to families in need on certain days.
The exhibits are all hands on- open things up, touch everything, make things, play with everything! You won't find anything behind a velvet cord here!

Great tour, knowledgeable guides. However, not sure about the"mystery" part! Seems to me that the true Sarah Winchester/Winchester House history/story is way more intriguing than all the "legends," "mystery," etc. etc.! Read the pamphlet (for sale in the Gift Shop) written by the people that knew her.
Hard to imagine how this lady spent her days and what her (seemingly very loyal) servants thought of her and having to make their way through this rabbit warren!
Food very pricey (bottle of water and bag of chips $5.45) but goes toward keeping the place up, so justified the price in my mind.
All in all, enjoyed the place very much....different...good day trip from SF. Went on a Thursday; July 19, 2007; not too crowded and easy parking. Worth the admission and while no pressing reason to go a second time, would absolutely take visitors and/or recommend tour to others. Also recommend the "Behind the Scenes" tour; not much more $$ for some additional interesting info.
Ask if anyone has figured out the Cupertino Street address (the plans on the wall in the basement ...I believe for the either the boiler or elevator...indicates the house is on Cupertino???? Our guide said she had never noticed that before and would check it out!
Pros: Great guides, good parking, super interesting
Cons: Pricey food

Capital Flea Market is a fun, open-air market place with bargains galore! It has more private sellers (average folks selling their belongings) where as many of the large swap meets are now heavily populated by businesses offering discounted pricing because of the low overhead. There are businesses, but not to the exclusion of the private sellers.
And it is the private sellers that bring the most wonderful treasures! Come out to the Capital Flea Market and discover your next treasure!

This was an amazing experience and it was so cool. The staff was friendly and dissecting the gene of a jellyfish to bacteria was not so bad at all! FUN!

My uncle took me here on my free day. I usually don't enjoy museums, but he thought that I'd like it since I am a geek. This place had lots of interesting old technologies and also history of how technology and innovation got to where they are now. Very enlightening. If you have kids, I recommend taking them there to give them some understanding of life before all these technologies. They will develop an appreciation for the technology and the things we have now.

Happy Hollow Park and Zoo is a great place to take small children. The park has been open since the 1960's and has been the favorite place of generations of San Jose children.
Among the gentle childrens rides is every child's favorite pal- Danny the Dragon!!
Danny is a dragon who allows park visitors to ride on his back and takes them on a magical journey through the park! Parents will see a train with a molded fiberglass body shaped like a dragon. But for those of us who grew up with Danny, he'll always be a real dragon! :-)
Even parents will be mystified when they realize that Danny has no tracks to follow and that his driver doesn't do any actual driving. So how does Danny move?!! Magic perhaps?!!
The secret is a rare, 1960's era gyroscope mechanism. Danny is the only dragon left like this and he is a rare treasure!
Bring your little ones for a day of enchantment!
Connected to the park is the Zoo. There are a wide variety of animals that will delight youngsters, including a petting zoo where they can feed alfalfa pellets to the friendly animals.
Stay with very small children in the petting zoo area. Sometimes the pygmy goats get a bit pushy when they want the alfalfa pellets!

If your kids like video games, but if it feels like you're dropping enough cash to pay their college education into the coin slot of their favorite games, Nickel City will be a refreshing change.
Believe it or not, most games really are just a nickel!! Some are even free!! The fee depends on how new the game is. The newest may cost as much as 4 nickels at the most.
It's a fun place to take the kids. My one issue with it is that they could use a better ventilation system. The enclosed area is packed with kids hyped up on their games and working up a sweat. It smells a bit like a locker room. But I can deal with that for the savings!!

Streetlight Records is a fun place to hang out and browse the huge selection of media. The vinyl is fairly cheap and the selection is good (though not on par with Big Al's right down the street), and if you want to save a few bucks buying used, it is a great alternative to Best Buy, etc. The prices on new stuff are outrageous though, and it is not recommended for new releases.

Camera 12 offers a great alternative to the gigantic megaplexes which seem all-too common nowadays. Instead, they offer a wide range of art house and independent films. It’s proximity to downtown San Jose makes it good place for dinner and a movie and the City of San Jose offers free parking on nights and weekends so parking is not a problem.

This is a two storey Borders on Santana Row (the bathroom is on the top floor). I love their "paperchase" section for their fabulous collection of journals, photo albums, notebooks, note cards, etc. Their Bargain Books are scattered throughout the store (mostly on the upper level) and offer some great deals! The staff at the info desk is helpful. I usually order from Amazon.
