RE-OPENING! 8/8/2006

Hi everyone, just to give you an update on Taka's Sushi (for those who are fans). They are planning a grand re-opening in September. I am sorry Zen Toro patrons, but Taka's has bought the restaurant and taken over the lease. Just to let you know, Mr. Nishiyama (the owner of Zen Toro) still has a place out in Davis. All of your favorite Taka chefs will be back (Lou, Jason, Mike, and Nao San). It will be the same menu with new additions. I will keep you updated on the formal re-opening date and wed love it if you could come by! more

TAKA'S SUSHI REVIEW 3/12/2006

If you are looking for tasty authentic sushi and want to dine in a casual and fun environment this is the place! It has a very relaxing ambience and the staff is very nice. It is good for couples or group dining. I have eaten there many times and have always had a a great time. Cons: Can be crowded more

A lot better than Mikuni's! 3/3/2006

I laughed when I read the previous rater's review. Hot towels? Come on now! Taka's is blantantly a ""California Style"" sushi joint! They aren't masquerading to be some high class place where waiters with stiff white collars are going to hand you hot towels! Now, I go there for the food. I have been to those other places but yet I still come back to Takas. Not because of the service, which I admit is mediocre at times, but for the quality of food. The chefs are second to none. If you establish a relationship with them, they will treat you like a KING! I know my sushi and my fish and I know Taka's serves the best quality fish they can find. No doubts about that in my mind... more

Just Average Sushi! 2/19/2006

Just average sushi. I'm a recent transplant from the Bay Area and Taka's is just average compared to some of the great sushi places in SF, Berkeley and Alameda. They had no amaebi! This is the first sushi place that I've been to that didn't have it. I was able to get one mediocre order of hamachi toro before they ran out at 6:30p on a Saturday night. Not a good sign. Had to constantly ask the sushi chef to refill the gari and wasabi for us. No hot towels when you sit down. Sushi chefs are not very professional. In fact, one was talking with an obvious regular at the bar and using profanity in front of my young son. If this is one of the best in Sac, then I've moved to a gastronomic dead zone. Pros: good sushi rolls Cons: Service, Sushi Selection, Too Trendy more

Going Down Hill 2/9/2006

I have been going to Taka's for almost 3 years and it used to be my favorite place. Had a few problems with quality of food after the remodel for a few months. Unfortunately the service has gotten very bad. Not from the wait staff but from the Sushi chefs. I got a roll that the pieces were very big and asked to have them cut and was handed a butter knife! Chef said for me to do it myself. Asked to see a manager and was told ""NO"". I know six people that wont go back because of the service. Too bad :-( Pros: Location, Parking, Small size Cons: Service, Service, Service more

This is the place I miss most in Sacramento 11/13/2005

We moved back to Seattle and have some great Sushi places but Taki's is an A..miss the neighborhood Sushi place that serves excellent Sushi... Would not move back to Sacramento for that but would visit and eat there. Pros: neighborhood, parking, sushi Cons: don't live in sac. more

Delicious 10/11/2005

I don't know what Takas the other reviewer went to but I have NEVER had a bad experience at Taka's. The food is always wonderful and I always feel welcome there. The sushi chefs are always friendly and willing to make something new for my friends and me. Takas is wonderful, hands down. I always go in for Monday Night Footbal because they also have HUGE plasma screen. It's great. Pros: sushi, chefs, HUGE plasma TVs Cons: noise level more

Horrible 9/26/2005

I was born and raised in Japan and I can tell you that my experience at Taka's was horrible. My friends like to take me to new sushi places as a ""gauge"" on how good and authentic a place is. Some friends had raved about Taka's so I decided to give it a try. It was not worth going. The fish wasn't very fresh, the rice was too wet, the flavors weren't good, the service was bad, and the overall experience left a bad taste in my mouth (or maybe that was the sushi...). I would not recommend this place to anyone. Cons: Bad, not authentic, not fresh fish more

SO TASTY! 7/16/2005

I took other reviewers' suggestions. Got the zig zag hand roll, BBC roll, and Mike's roll. Also got Toro (fatty tuna) and Shake/Sake (salmon). ALL FANTASTIC. Although I am not a big fan of spiciness, Mike's roll was extremely good! The fish is fresh and the Toro was amazing, it literally MELTED in my mouth (and that's a good thing). The waitresses are all women and flirt often, so if you're a guy, you'll probably enjoy that. Hahaha. Will definitely keep going back! Not much seating, so make reservations. We did, but there were seats left still... Pros: fresh sushi, fantastic rolls, QUALITY Cons: LOUD background music more

This Place Rocks! 5/18/2005

I live around the corner from Taka's and it is a good thing I do, because I would drive hours to eat there. I crave Taka's often because it is so good. The Lou's Roll is heaven, and the zig zag hand rolls are the best I have ever had. Ask the sushi chef to make you something special and you will never be disappointed. Pros: Location, Price, Food more

BEST SUSHI IN SACRAMENTO!! 5/11/2005

I've ben to sushi places all over California, but truly, none of them compares to Taka's Sushi. The ingredients are fresh, the portions are large, the food is relatively inexpensive, and the chefs are really wonderful! Their hand rolls are just SO mouth-wateringly delicious, but then, so are their other rolls. Every time a friend drops by for a visit, we have to go to Taka's. Each and every time, they leave impressed and extremely full. The ambiance is warm and inviting, and it's a great place to get together with a bunch of friends. I love Taka's Sushi! Pros: FRESH INGREDIENTS, great for groups, inexpensive more

Oh So Yummy! 3/7/2005

I love how Taka's has been remodeled over the holidays. It's still small and cozy, but a little more room for seating. The place looks great! The sushi is always fresh and very good. You HAVE to try the City Roll, we always order seconds cause it's soooo good. The service is friendly, but on bad days they can be a little forgetful. The Better Than Sex can be hotter/spicier on some days than others. I love the variety of rolls, and their Green Tea ice cream is top notch! Pros: Great food, Friendly service Cons: Not a lot of seating more

Best Sushi... no joke! 2/22/2005

Taka's is a rare jem you find in a deep dark dingy hole. It sparkles in the dimmest of lights and radiates yumminess. I can safely say this because I go there at least once a week and I have NEVER been disappointed. The one thing I would suggest is to sit at the sushi bar and tell the chef to make you something special. Lou (ask them what their names are) is a great guy and an even better sushi chef. He whips up some delectable dishes and his personality sparkles to match. The rest of the guys at the sushi bar are great too. Check out Taka's... you won't be disappointed. (Try out the City Roll, BBQ Albacore, and the Lomi Salmon. My mouth is salivatating already.) Have fun there! Pros: Great Food, Wonderful Sushi Chefs, Great Menu Choice more

Holy mackerel! 2/22/2005

Just a small neighborhood kind of place, but has some wonderful sushi specials, including Aji (Spanish Mackerel), Sakura (King Mackerel), and Uni (Sea Urchin). For main course I had grilled Saba Shoiaki (Japanese Mackerel), which was just a bit dry, did not have that oily fresh sea test I'm used to. Vegetable side dishes were quite good, including Gomae (steamed asparagus & spinach in sesame sauce). Miso soup was not quite as flavorful as elsewhere, but otherwise everything was fine. Restaurant itself is kind of small, with only about 15 tables, however the attentive service by beautiful young waitresses more than makes up for any lack of ambience. Pros: Sushi specials, Menu choices/variety, Attractive waitresses Cons: Not huge more

Just GO! 1/8/2005

Taka's... what can I say? It's the BEST. I know many of you have read other reviews stating other restaurants are the best but I make no mistake in saying Taka's makes the best sushi in Sacramento. The standard menu is good, but when you order the specials, I guarantee it's going to be fantastic. The fish is fresh fresh fresh, and I always find something new to try... if I can tear myself away from the BBQ Albacore and the City Roll. YUM! So, just go! and try it out and see for yourself! Oh and Taka's DELIVERS to midtown residents if it's rainy and you don't want to leave your house. Pros: yummy, delicious, tantalizing sushi more

The World's BEST SUSHI 12/29/2004

I totally Love Taka's Sushi. In one word, they are ""Perfect"". I love their Madonna Roll, and their calimari is to die for! If you want to have a fun dat, go here, it is so awesome. Good food, good atmosphere, good service... what more could you want in a Sushi place? Best sushi in Sac. Pros: Best sushi, Good Service, Great experience more

Great things come in small packages... 6/17/2004

I LOVE Taka's Sushi. It is a great place to grab a quick lunch, or have a fun dinner on a Friday night with a group of friends. It is a small place, but the waitresses are so willing to pull up a couple of tables together for the whole group. Great selection of sake (try the unfiltered NIGORI). And the best part? THE SUSHI! Favorites include: Kohaku Roll, Fong Fong Roll, BBQ Albacore, and there are too many others to name. If you got friends who don't eat sushi, they have a to-die-for beef teriyaki. The chefs are funny and easy to talk to if you are sitting at the bar. Watch out for Jason, he's a joker... same with Lou! This place is highly recommended by myself and so many of my friends. Bottome Line: Great place for sushi, laughs and a good time. Pros: Fresh delicious sushi, Great wait staff, Homey atmosphere more
