Not just a bad day 10/10/2010

I never write reviews, but this was hands down the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. Our food seemed to take forever, and like the last review our daughter's food came out about 15 minutes before ours did. The service was horrible and slow. It was impossible to get our waiters attention and when we did we always had to wait awhile for what we asked for or ask again. We had to ask twice for a refill on our sodas and I guess most people don't ask since once we got the bill we realized that we were charge $1.50 for each soda, no free refills. What a rip off for a fountain drink soda. Now for the worst part. They bring out little dishes of sauces to put on flat crispy bread. There are spoons in the the sauces, but we did just dip some things in there including my daughters chicken fingers so she could try the sauce. Once we were done we watched the waiter take these little dishes directly from our table and give them to another table that had just arrived. We watched him do this yet again with another table so so it was not a mistake but apparently a common practice at this restaurant. The place wasn't too clean to begin with, but that was just GROSS. We use to go here a lot, but it has gone incredibly downhill. LAST TIME I WILL EVER EVER GO TO THE TAJ MAHAL! more

Bad service 7/18/2010

We've been to this place a few times since moving to the Pittsburgh area a year ago. Being huge fans of Indian food, we will admit that it's usually pretty good. This time however, the food was dry and cold and the service was appalling. Pros: Food (sometimes) Cons: Service (cleanliness) more

Best Indian place around 7/15/2010

Taj Mahal is not only the best Indian restaurant around Pittsburgh, it is the best restaurant in Pittsburgh period food is home-style quality and prices could not be better if you want a real treat, make it to the buffet and you will win the Lottery more

Friendly service, unique cuisine 3/11/2010

I visited Taj Mahal once w/ my gf for a new experience. The menu is looooooong. It was a bit daunting for someone who has never experienced Indian food before (me). But I was very happy with my selection. I tried the Chicken Tandoori. My gf had the Chicken Tikka Masolla (sp). You get a lot of food for the price. The presentation was excellent. The taste is difficult for me to describe because I am not accustomed to Indian flavors. However, it was delicious! Pros: value, taste, service more

Will go back! 8/31/2009

My 1st experience with Indian food was at the ""Taj Mahal"" , NYC, East Village. I've been back there a couple times, but wanted to find a good Indian restaurant closer to home. Read the reviews for several places in Pittsburgh, chose the Taj Mahal. I was not disappointed. The beef curry was excellent and I had enough to take some home. I want to try the various chicken dishes, as this restaurant seems to be known for them. Pros: Really good food, friendly service more

Thank You Taj Mahal 7/12/2009

In my opinion, Pittsburgh is one of the livable towns for this reason ? it boasts of a top rated Indian Restaurant named ? Taj Mahal?, unparallel in the entire country, may be the entire world would be an understatement (it would not be an exaggerated statement). The name ?Taj Mahal? originated from the famed ?Taj Mahal? in Agra, India. (Taj means unsurpassed). So also is this restaurant. The unbelievable food that is served here is top class! The wide variety of freshly made dishes served daily during luncheon buffet is unavailable elsewhere in the country, for such a throw away price! The most gracious host, lady-owner, Usha Sethi, is wedded to quality at all times, sparing no effort. Almost always, she is behind the doors in the kitchen (come rain, come shine). She is concocting something new, something old, something different and something delicious always! Never a dull-meal! I have been a vegetarian for a long time and have never found even in Indian food such creative cuisine and so delectable! When my daughter left Pittsburgh after five years of training, we felt that the most that would be missed or rather irreplaceable would be this extraordinary frugal gourmet which truly is a feast fit for kings offered every single day of the week for a nominal price, during luncheon buffet. The amazing lady?s passion for cooking and dedicated service blend to make it a unique place (in the past, present and future). It certainly be incomplete without the noteworthy mention of the equally note worthy gracious host, Subhash Sethi, and the two rays of sunshine ? the young girls on staff also tireless and who never fail to beam bright and sweet at us. The owners are a source of inspiration no doubt! It is a nice place to be . May this Taj Mahal bloom and grow and thrive for ever feasting one and all for a long time to come. May the all merciful God grant you all a healthy hindered years or more! Wishing you always success/very best. A highly pleased customer ? Suchitra Neravetla. Pros: Food, Gracious Hosts/Owners Cons: None more

best buffet and service with a smile! 2/8/2009

I decided to try Taj Mahal out today with my daughter after reading several good and a few not so good reviews on this site. I have to say the less than stunning reviews that i read must have been from some pretty uneducated diners! As it was my first trip to this restaurant we decided to try the buffet to experience as many dishes as we could. Normally I prefer to order off the menu since buffet food usually seems to be of less quality. Not so with the Taj Mahal! It is generally considered that when you experience a new food style that if you like 2 out of 3 items you have had a stellar experience. This was my teenage daughters first foray into Indian food and she could not find an item she (or I) did not love. Service was excellent and i found the bustle of the waitstaff almost entertaining! Even though there were no empty seats in in the house my water glass was never less than full and every look was met with a smile. I highly recommend the Taj Mahal for any diner especially those who want to experience high quality authentic Indian dishes for the first time. Pros: Excellent food and service at bargain prices Cons: None really.Building was plain but its all about the food more

Excellent Indian cuisine- Can't wait to go back!! 1/17/2009

Went here last night with my fiance, at the urging of some friends.. I was a little hesitant about trying Indian food originally (you never know what you'll get), but Taj Mahal really erased all of my doubt.. We both tried the Lamb Vindaloo and it was amazing.. Coupled with the delicious Garlic Nan, I think it was one of the best meals I have had the pleasure of enjoying in a long time.. The menu is HUGE, so don't be afraid to ask for some help in figuring out what you want.. The service was great despite the big crowd.. It's a small restaurant so it took a while to get seated, but it was well worth the wait.. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for great, new, and exciting food.. You may want to call and make a reservation first though Pros: Huge selection, delicious food, small family owned vibes Cons: Small parking lot, average desserts more

Alright food, not so good everything else 1/16/2009

This restaurant sucked. My first complaint: the decor and atmosphere. The first thing someone should think when they enter a restaurant is: ""ah, this will be a pleasant dining expierience"" not something along the lines of ""one of my grandparents had a basement that looked something like this."" Second: drinks. At a normal restaurant, waiters walk about and if they spot an empty glass, they offer to get you another. At this establishment, you get a glass of water which they will gladly top off, but if you'd like another can (yes, can) of what you were drinking you need to explicitly ask. Third: service. We ordered our food, and after about 30 minutes, started wondering where our appetizers were. We finally got them, but after less than 5 minutes our food arrived, so we didn't even have time to finish them. What I hated the most is that we were expected to eat all of our food off of a single plate. I was trying to eat this really awful thing called a samosa and when they brought the food out I had to shove it off to the side so they could dump my food from the pan it was cooked in onto my plate. I don't know if bringing the food still noisly sizzling like that was due to laziness or an attempt at theatrics, but either way it was unappetizing. If I wanted bad foreign food dumped onto a dirty plate in a tacky setting, I would have just stayed home and made ramen. And another thing about the service: my friend asked for a glass of milk and it took FIFTEEN MINUTES for them to get it. Finally, we get to the food itself. I had vegetable...what was it called? Tempura? No, that's Japanese. Tampoori? I think that's it. I had vegetable tampoori and it was quite bland, but my friends were raving about their food, so I guess it's alright. After all, they have been rated the best Indian restaurant in Pittsburgh. But would I eat there again? Pros: great variety, apparently good food Cons: poorly timed service, really bad ambience more

I love the Taj 1/16/2009

I love the Taj..I have been coming here with my family from Wheeling WV almost every weekend.. We look forward to it all week as the food is always great, probably the best in Pittsburgh if not Pennsylvania.. WV lacks sorely in good Indian cuisine but the Taj really fills the void.. The Sethi family is always so hospitable and sends extra food home with us every time we leave.. You have to try the Manchurian Cauliflower, it is an indo-chinese fusion dish that is simply excellent Pros: Great value, succulent food, huge variety Cons: Service is sometimes slow, its a smaller restaurant though more

Great big buffet 8/30/2008

My husband and I went for the weekend buffet for the first time yesterday and found that it satisfies both my desire for huge variety of veggie dishes and buttery palak paneer, and his for hot fresh breads and good meats. There was a mix of Northern and Southern Indian dishes. The butter chicken sauce wasn't all that (I've had better at India Garden, Maharaja, and Tamarind) but the rest was so good (they even had fresh crispy masala dosa on the buffet!). The goat curry was very tasty. I'm never a fan of going to Indian restaurants for table service, because I like the variety of buffet, so I can't really comment on how dinner service might be. The restaurant was clean and nicely decorated, and the service was not unfriendly, our empty plates were cleared promptly, and I was able to get immediate attention when I wanted some tea. I'm sure this will become a favorite when we're in the North Hills. Pros: great variety, parking, service, fresh breads Cons: watery butter chicken sauce, pre-sweetened masala chai more

avoid unless your very drunk 8/13/2008

I have recently moved to the U.S From the UK to the greater pittsburgh area. I have visited this restaurant twice as the first experience was horrible. They give you too much food that does not taste very good and it is over priced. We gave it a few months and tried again and on the second visit the staff were unproffesional and pushy and the food was worse than the first time. The popadoms were greasy, ordered a mix of the veg starters , chicken makahni and naan. My husband ordered a lamb dish and vegetable fried rice. None of them were well cooked and I asked for mine to be a 8 on the spicey scale and wasnt even a one. Would never eat here again and am really shocked that the internet suggests its the best curry house in PA! Rant over the curry houses in the greater pittsburgh area are not great but this is by far the worst and I have been to all bar one. Pros: Cant think of any maybe the fact they have parking outside? Cons: Waste of money, not good cooked indian food. more

Used to be good -before the pushy waiter's upsell. 6/9/2008

Used to like the place -the last 2 experiences have not been good due to a pushy waiter trying to convince us to try new dishes. The Lamb chops they asked to try was not good and over priced. During one visit asked for gulabjan and gave us an over-priced gulabjan with with cream. The regualar one does not have cream and tastes great. Now, always its an upsell, which I am tired off. Pros: Used to be good. May be okay for take-out Cons: Waiters try to upsell on dishes - disrupts the experience. more

Incredible food, fun service 3/20/2008

I'm not Indian so I can't tell you whether it's very authentic, but I think it is. The owners and most of the staff are from India. The food is amazing!!! Dreamy, creamy, healthy, flavorful. Go for the lunch buffet some time. Every week there is some new dish as well as the great old regulars. Don't miss the deserts. Only problem: water. Sometimes they aren't attentive about water. If you become something of a regular (as I am), you'll learn to love the staff. They?rerelaxed and very willing to be conversational. Pros: food, escape from McKnight road Cons: attendance to water more
