Pittsburgh Pro Bicycles

I just bought a new bike here since I was poorly fitted for my previous bike at REI. I had the mountain bike for 1 1/2 years and though I love it for what it's worth, I had felt like I was a bit squished while riding. Plus I wanted something more suited for my daily commutes and for new pursuits in long-distance riding. When I checked out the store I had my old bike with me...the fit guy took one look at me and said, "I would have chosen that bike for someone a head shorter than you." These people seem to know what they are talking about. When I gave a price range for a new bike, they were more than accommodating...setting me up with a great deal on a bike that fit nicely and is perfect for my needs. They even retrofitted my old rack onto the new bike. Maybe there was a Mr. Cranky-uppety-pants who worked there when the other reviewers went into the shop, but I thought they had good customer service and didn't try to up sell me (too much!). more

As the others have said in the positive and the negative reviews, Pgh Pro Bikes caters towards the high end purchaser; even so, the shopper best be well informed about the actual market price, the specific model years currently in production, and the stock components prior to entering the store. The 2007 bikes are now available; the 2006 leftovers on their floor should be discounted. Also, Bianchis and Cannondales come with pedals from the factory; amazingly, these pedals, even if only worth $40, are never found on the bikes that Pgh Pro will sell to you. Unlike other shops, the people behind the counters are not the mechanics. They are salesman with questionable bike experience, who will do their best to push a sale. The new setup on Forbes Ave, has the mechanics hidden in the basement. The hourly rates are comparable to the other stores in Pittsburgh (Ghatto, Biketek), but do not expect to interact with and/or learn from the mechanics who perform the repairs. They are in the business to make money (understandable), and as such they would prefer that you remain dependent on them for $40/hour. Ask the guys at West Liberty Cycles for advice, and they will provide. Better yet, go to Kraynick’s and learn to become your own mechanic. more

PPB provides terrible service and even worse prices… No one here is friendly and I doubt they even ride bikes. You’ll be better off buying a bike from any other shop in Pittsburgh. Watch out for the mongloid named Jason, he’s nasty. more

I've been stopping by the shop for about 3 years, and bought a mountain bike two years ago at the old shop. There are a few very aggressive sales guys who will push older merch. Everyone is knowledgeable, however, so if you come prepared, knowing what the different component groups are and what MSRP is, you can hold your own and bargain with them. The high end selection is quite good. Recommended only if you've done your research and know what you want. more

Tony, after having such a bad experience, why did you go back? If I were to have such an experience somewhere, i would stay away. Why would the sales person argue with you about buying a more expensive bike? That just doesn't make sense. You question the other reviews and now I'm going to question yours. I have always had a great experience at Pgh Pro. I've gotten several bikes from them and I will continue going back. If they are more expensive on some product, they can justify the price with their customer service. You always get what you pay for. more

I haven't been in to this shop since they moved, but that shouldn't matter since the experience I walked away w/ involves customer service and I doubt they lowered their prices. I went in to look at a Zurich in summer '02. They had an '01 in stock that they said was my size (it turns out it would've been a size too small--their "fitting" is laughable). Anyway, they quoted me about $300 below MSRP. Not great, but not bad either. I didn't buy that year. The next year I go in, the same '01 bike is still there, but w/ the Ultegra components and Rolf wheels swapped out w/ low-end Campy and "handbuilt" wheels--as I recall, low end hubs and rims. At a total price that's $300 OVER MSRP. It's a 2-year old bike w/ lesser components, non-boutique wheels. It should be WELL below list. Same sales guy, who by the way should not be in front of customers. I was willing to pay for a more expensive new bike and he starts arguing w/ me?! O.K... If you're absolutely dying to get a Trek product, do yourself a favor and look at one of the million other Trek dealers in the area or better yet, buy online. You'll find any other shop is much MUCH cheaper and knowledgeable. I really have to question the other reviews, ask local riders what they think of Pgh. Pro. The other reviews are posted a little too close to each other. more

Salespeople here were terrible. I went in and told them that my price range was $500-$700 for a new road bike, and they basically told me I would get a crappy bike for that money. They had me test ride $1200 bikes which felt great but were way out of my price range. I kept trying to look at the cheaper bianchi bikes, but they kept showing me the $2000 models. Oh well, maybe I looked like I had lots of money and was an easy mark, but I wouldn't ever buy a bike here-- especially now that I know alot more about bikes. Nor would I recommend this store to anyone who is a novice in any area of bicycles. The staff will make you feel stupid, I promise. more

Pittsburgh Pro Bicycle provides really excellent customer service. They actually will take the time to match you with a bike frame that fits the geometry of your body and will also help you choose components to meet your needs. They are also so wonderful about assisting each customer by helping pick out equipment such as helmets, gloves, shoes, clothing, bags, and sunglasses. The sales associates are heavily experienced and are very informative. This store really cares about making sure you get the perfect bike. more

Pittsburgh Pro Bikes is a quality specialty bike shop selling exercise equipment, accessories, and lots of bicycles (road, touring, mountain, hybrid, etc.,). They sell cannondale, gary fisher, trek, specialized, bianchi, lemond, and some other specialty bikes. They also have a small selection of timbuk2 messenger bags. Their staff is generally friendly and helpful but every now and then there is a guy who can be rude & impatient. I still go back. more

I have visited the store for any bicycle maintenance, part or accessory for me and my friends. Whenever I go into the store, there is a sales associate always asking me if I need help with anything. They have a good rotation of used bikes in and out and can usually find a great deal. I've been through a couple of bikes there and would recommend them without hesitation. more

This is a rather pricey bike shop that just moved to this location to compete with the second rate bike shop across the street. They still Electra, Bianchi, Trek, Connondale and a few other brands. It's a beautiful store. All glass front, a lot of bikes, jerseys, shorts, accessories, frames and parts. The stuff is shy but helpful. There are also some used bikes for sale from time to time.
