Best

No really, go eat at Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q. That's all you need to know.

Worst

Hog Heaven is a perfectly decent bbq joint, but its 'que is nothing beyond ordinary. They do a decent job on the pork and the sides, but it isn't the type of place that could sur...

Great Food! 10/11/2009

Not only is this the best BBQ in Durham but you have to try their granny potatoes! Everything on their menu is great southern, down-home cooking! The owners are great people that are also very involved in their community and help with local non-profit organizations and events. We love this place :)) Pros: The best food and BBQ in the area more

The best food I have had in a while. 9/20/2009

Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q has the best food ever, we are quite discerning in our taste for food and this restaurant is by far, the most flavorful food we have had in a while! The barbeque, to die for...the fried chicken - not greasy, just perfect! The flounder and catfish were just too big to eat all at once. And the banana pudding was just right! Please, do try this restaurant out, it has plenty of personality and lots of flavor to the food. The service was just right, not too overbearing but always there when you needed her. One of our best finds around. Pros: Great service, flavorful food Cons: Absolutely, emphatically, none. more

Best BBQ in the City of Durham!!! 9/15/2009

I've been all over the U.S. and tried BBQ from everywhere. The only BBQ that even comes close to Hog Heaven is out of state. My wife and I went because we live close, but have never been. Shame on us! We didn't know what we were missing. The atmosphere was cozy and clean. I ordered the Chopped Pork BBQ sandwich w/coleslaw, side of Potato Salad and Baked Beans. I was shocked how the sandwich was so Delicious! It melts in your mouth. We're big BBQ fans and we've been looking for the best BBQ in the City of Durham. Here it is! It didn't taste as thick as pork can. It had a light taste, but still filling. The potato salad was seasoned right and the BBQ Baked beans were sweet and spicy. I highly enjoyed my experience. My wife had the ribs which were, as she stated were ""Cooked to Perfection""! We found our new BBQ spot!!! Service was great. We went in during the lunch hour, and our food was done and hot, within 8 minutes of ordering. Hog Heaven is the real deal when it comes to a BBQ. Thank you for taking the time to make us feel at home. Pros: The Ribs, The chopped BBQ sandwich, Sides Cons: Closed on Sunday more

new look 9/9/2009

Over the holiday weekend the workers at Hog Heaven have been very busy. Imagine my surprise, to enter the dining area to find fresh paint and decor on the walls. The fresh appearence has only enhanced an already delightful dining experience. ""Della"" is a gem. If only other eateries in the city had a ""Della"" of their own. She makes a night out to Hog Heaven worth the trip. The other girls who work the dining area are a treat as well. kudos to Mark and the rest of the Durham Hog Heaven team! Pros: neater appearence, delightful waitstaff more

One of the Best Three in the World 7/24/2009

Hog Heaven's barbecue needs no modifiers (such as ""Lexington, South Carolina mustard, Texas, Memphis, Kansas City"", etc.) It is an outstanding example of Barbeque, a delicacy invented and perfected in Eastern North Carolina. It is an anomally that a restaurant worthy to stand with Wilbur's of Goldsboro and Parker's of Wilson would be located outside the region in Durham, but such is the case. Their barbecue is authentic and served with the traditional East Carolina sides. Pros: Genuine Barbeque with no modifiers Cons: Large is right much food to eat more

just aboutthe best damn bbq around 7/20/2009

they have just aboutthe best damn food around ** SECRETS IN THE SAUCE* Pros: good food, fast service Cons: prices, more

Wow, great food and service. 7/19/2009

We just moved to the area, and heard that Hog Heaven was ranked the best BBQ in the area and their BBQ chicken was the talk of the locals so we definitely had to see what all the hype was about. It definitely lived up to the hype! The food is so good! The vinegar based sauce was new to us, and we will never look at BBQ the same way again. The chicken was also very good, and their fries are superb. Great sweet tea too. We have only lived here for about 1 month, and we have been to Hog Heaven 4 times. It is a definite 'don't miss.' Pros: Great food and service Cons: Closed on Sunday more

Great place for BQ and Brunswick Stew 6/1/2009

We use to go to Bullocks but their brunswick stew has become like soup not thick anymore...So after reading reviews here, we decided to try them..So today we got BBQ, Brunswick Stew, Slaw and Hush Puppies...well it was all so much better than Bullocks..the Stew was outstanding.thick and yummy..the BBQ was great..the Hush puppies were soft and great also...we ordered a dozen of them and wow we got many more...we will certainly be changing our allegiance to Hog Heaven when we want BBQ and Stew Pros: Best Brunswick Stew ever, great BBQ Cons: slaw could be chopped finer more

Hog Heave Bar B Q 1/12/2009

Hog Heaven is a a delicious barbecue destination for Duke students and those at UNC and their friends and relatives. My daughter introduced me to Hog Heaven during my first visit to North Carolina and I made sure to return on my next trip. more

Very good 10/21/2008

The food is delicious and the service is great and friendly. We especially enjoyed the chicken and dumplings and hush puppies. There is a big lunch rush but the line moves fast. Pros: Fast good food Cons: Dislabled ice tea more

A MUST do in Durham.... 10/13/2008

This was the highest rated on Citysearch.. I SEE WHY! This place was incredible. We came in on a quiet day kinda midway between lunch and dinner. As suggested, i tried a plate of barbeque and i was in heaven. The barbeque, of course, is top-notch, especially the platter with chopped pork and chicken, but the shrimp burger is also a worthwhile contender, and I love the roast (yes, roast) best of all. Believe me, the sauce, these other reviews are talking about is the real deal! I tried another place in Durham and I was horrified with my dinky plate of Q. I wouldn't say it was even a 1/4 lb (that's 4 oz) where I at least got probably close to double here and had to take some home (smothered in sauce of course!) Pros: Home Cooking and friendly service Cons: Limited parking more

Good food and value, not so good service 9/23/2008

I'm a regular at Hog Heaven since I moved here almost 2 years ago. The meats and veggies are consistently good and high quality, as one reviewer stated. Not greasy and quite tender. The banana pudding is great - if you have room after your meal. They don't skimp on quantity. Pros: quality food and good sizes; nice dining room staff Cons: not very asthetically pleasing; poor cust. svc at cashier station more

Pork At Its Best 9/22/2008

I really like the barbeque at Hog Heaven. They also have daily lunch specials and the portions are plentiful. Although I probably shouldn't, I often buy the pork skins which are as delicious as they are unhealthy. For dessert you must have the banana pudding. The parking may be a little hectic but the food is worth the hassle. more

Good 9/9/2008

....if you don't plan on doing any work after lunch. You will finish your meal and want to go straight to sleep. I really enjoyed the food because it was like visiting my grandmothers house. Nothing like grandmas cooking. more

It's okay 6/3/2008

I have to say that the atmosphere isn't that great. I have yet to find a barbecue place that offers really good barbecue. I suppose if you are a native Carolinian, you will not have any issues with the barbecue, but for those who like sweet and tangy sauce this is not the place. more

Good solid NC eastern style but not a destination 5/23/2008

BBQ brings out the passion in people and there's always somebody who will take one side diametrically opposed to another's feelings in this topic. Personally, I don't see the fuss with Bullocks in Durham as one example because a lot of people like it. Hog Heaven is a little overpriced but the food is not bad. I don't go to these places looking for fancy ambiance or luxury-grade service. But good BBQ places have a level of charm in addition to the focal point of good pork in NC. I would not hesitate to go back to Hog Heaven if I were nearby and wanting a meal. It's pretty good, but as far as being the best cue in the area? No way. It's too non-descript to qualify. Allen and Sons, also thinks a lot of their own food by the way they price it, but their pork knocks Hog Heaven out of the water. A&S has real wood flavor that I don't get any hints of at HH. Bob's in Creedmoor is far superior to Hog Heaven as far as I'm concerned. We won't even mention Lexington though it's probably not fair to compare western NC style to eastern. Pros: Consistent food. Solid and the cue is not greasy. Cons: Non-descript. Nothing spectacular. No wood flavor. more

You have to be kidding 5/20/2008

Can't see it. Barbecue is not the same as prior owner. Bland with no spices. I sat at the drive through window at 5pm for 10 minutes with one car in front of me. I ordered chicken and it must have been cooked at lunch. Cold and dry. Vegetables had no taste. Tea was good but I won't be going back. Over-rated and not worth the drive. Cons: Bland more

BBQ is great, but the sides shine too 4/23/2008

I really like the BBQ here. Tough choice for my favorite BBQ between this and the BBQ Lodge on Capitol Blvd in Raleigh, both are excellent - but I really like the sides and BBQ alternatives here. The chicken and dumplings are really good. Pros: Great BBQ and Chicken and Dumplings Cons: location, staff needs some training more

True Carolina Bar-B-Q 3/31/2008

I used to live around the corner from this place and it was a definite drive up at least once a week. the food could not have been fresher if I made it myself. Vegetables are your regular steamed fare, but the Bar-B-Q and Brunswick stew is to die for!You gotta try it.dana more

Very Good Food 1/17/2008

I've been eating at Hog Heaven for years. For my family, the food has always been great. We meet friends there several times a month. The barbeque has always been the best in town and that is why they were voted best barbeque by the people in the triangle. When you add on best caterer, they must be doing something right. Go Hog Heaven! more
