An Average Icon 3/11/2010

A distant fourth in OP BBQ. Hayward's is definitely a local favorite (suits from Hallmark downtown drive out to dine here). As a BBQ afficianado, Hayward's is a shadow of it's former self. Hayward sold out about 5 years ago and they place has not improved (although the steak fries are still *killer*!). With Jack Stack and Smokehouse in the area, there's no reason to go to Hayward's... if you're looking for well-above average BBQ. And who's not? more

The BEST BBQ on Planet Earth 11/11/2008

I grew up in KC but have lived in the DFW area for almost 30 years. I drive to Kansas City now and then, just to eat here and buy cases of sauce to tempt my friends in Texas. This is, by far, the best BBQ in the United States of America. Which means, it's the best BBQ on Planet Earth. \r \r Texans think they own BBQ. Texans are clueless. They have no concept of BBQ reality. I'm sure the same can be said of Memphis BBQ, St. Louis BBQ or anywhere else.\r \r I have nightmares about the day when both Hayward and Hattie are no longer with us. I hope they have children who take over the business. If not, we're all in trouble......\r \r BTW: It's located in Overland Park, KS. Not Shawnee Mission, KS. more

Great BBQ 7/26/2008

I grew up in JoCo and was exposed to BBQ at Haywards. I now live in California and just took some smoked chicken (from my smoker) to a friends house and a bottle of Haywards and they loved it.\r \r They called and ordered a case of the sauce while I was there. The woman who loved it so much works at a fancy restaurant in Marin (Jo Co of the Bay Area) and plans on giving it as gifts. All the foodlovers will be ordering their own case shortly. BBQ is not good in California. Pros: sauce, ribs, burnt ends turkey Cons: far from SF more

I was raised on Kansas City BBQ, Hayward's Pit has long been my favorite and is rated in the top 3 city-wide by nearly everyone I know. 7/18/2008

What should you expect from K.C. BBQ? Ribs: the meat falls off the bone. Brisket: slow-cooked for hours in a pit filled with decades of character. Sauce: flavorful, spicy, complex. You get it all and more at Hayward's. \r \r I served in the Navy for 4 years. By far (other than family/friends), what I most missed while I was away from Kansas City was Hayward's Pit BBQ and Hayward's BBQ Sauce. My family shipped me innumerable bottles, but it was never enough. I had to keep it locked up to keep the vultures (officers) away. \r \r If you want to taste K.C.'s best , you have to eat at Hayward's. Pros: Food, Sauce, Tradition, Atmosphere, $1.99 Bottles of Sauce w/ Meal Cons: Hayward's doesn't get the publicity it deserves, but that's really a pro for consumers. more

BBQ done right 3/5/2008

I love this place. I often go and get a turkey or beef sandwitch but you could throw a dart at the menu and not go wrong. The owner Mr Hayward is often there and always very polite and friendly. The sauce is awsome and...I could go on forever just trust me go and get ready to be very happy. Pros: The meat, sauce, employes everything Cons: The food is so good it will make you misrable from over eating more

OMG delicious! 10/26/2006

I try to have Haywards BBQ a few times a year. That is a challenge because I live in Texas.\r Everything about it, from the aroma wafting through the neighbor hood to the last bit of sauce that found it's way to the inside of my wrist, is mouth watering good! If you are not sure what you want, I would get the sampler. For true BBQ taste masters, I recommend the short end.\r \r When ever I need a real BBQ fix, I give them a call and it is delivered to me.\r Love it, love it, love it! more

A Must do In KC 3/2/2006

This was the highest rated on Citysearch.. I SEE WHY! This place was incredible. We came in on a quiet day kinda midway between lunch and dinner. As suggested i tried a plate of burnt ends and i was in heaven. Believe me, the sauce these other reviews are talking about is the real deal! I tried another place in KC and I was horrified with my dinky plate of burnt ends. I wouldn't say it was even a 1/4 lb (that's 4 oz) where I at least got probably close to a pound here and had to take some home (smothered in sauce of course!) more

Best BBQ in K.C. 1/21/2004

Hayward Spears and his family have been serving the BEST Bar-B-Que in K.C. for many years now. The food is always consistant, and you can't go wrong with ant thing on the menu. But for a real treat, try the burnt end plate, or a combo beef and ham sandwich covered in the best sauce you will find any where! more

Best BBQ in KC 1/16/2004

I grew up in KC and this place in on my must go list when I return. Forget Arthur Bryant's. Forget Gates. All good but Hayward has refused to dilute his product and it shows. I ship cases of the sauce to myself in Los Angeles, where there is NO good BBQ, and share it with my frienda and use it at home. Best kept secret in KC. Pros: Sauce, Sauce, Sauce more

Best Sauce in Town 1/24/2003

Despite the inherent contradiction present within 'Johnson County BBQ', Haywards will always be one of my favorite restaurants. H himself is an absolute legend, and I remember growing up frolicking around the restaurant as a kid (my grandfather ate about 12 meals a week there). The sauce is perfect, my only complaint is that about one time in 5, the ribs aren't up to snuff. But that just means I use more sauce... Pros: Tasty, fun, famous Cons: messy, crowded, noisy more

Top notch 1/13/2003

A very good BBQ experience. Try the combo platter for a little of everything on your first trip. I've settled into ribs and burnt ends. The sauce is one of the best around. It pretty much defines what I think of as a KC sauce. Tangy, no sweetenss. Pros: sauce, ribs more

The only BBQ I ever eat! 10/28/2002

I've been going here since I was a kid and we had to wait hours for a table. Luckily, that hasn't been a problem since they moved to the new location. Over the years, I have tried lots of BBQ, but it always paled in comparison to Haywards. Therefore, I don't eat anything but Haywards now. I like the large beef/ham combo sandwich and the fries. People who didn't like this place may not have sampled enough items on the menu. I'm not sure everything on the menu is great b/c I'm stuck on what I love. In fact, I once ordered a small sandwich and was disappointed by the taste-don't ask me why. By the way, even my vegetarian friends liked this place-they made a meal of some sides. more
