Best

This is my first-time message on this board. Pros: Food, herbs and spices just right, not oversalted

Worst

I thought brunch here was OKAY. I had the stuffed french toast, which was good - but I have had better at...

Horrible management and service!!! 6/2/2006

We are from NYC and consider good service to be just as important as the quality of food, which was average at best--the sirloin was like one you could order at The Olive Garden; the ""famous"" chicken was presented as if the chef didn't quite know how to handle it, with the skin ripped off and haphazardly placed on a mound of mashed potatoes...The worst was the service. We legitimately asked for our dessert to be served with a Congratulations note on it and the waitstaff not only scoffed and openly laughed at us, but served our dessert sans message. When we spoke with the ""manager"" about this, all he did was reply (with a visible smirk) ""It wasn't me, dude."" Very professional indeed. Not to mention that the entire waitstaff sulked by their station as patrons finished their dinners--at 10:30 pm ON A SATURDAY NIGHT!!! Pros: average food, decent parking Cons: service, management, no extras more

Wonderful and romantic experience! 6/1/2006

I recently took my boyfriend here for his birthday. Made an early dinner reservation and enjoyed being seated in front of the beautiful fireplace. The service was friendly and accomodating and the food was fabulous. As the sun set, the servers came around and lit candles in the middle of the table and the fireplace was kept alive the entire time. It was really romantic and my boyfriend and I can't wait to go back! Pros: Romantic, Service more

Delicious food but a poor value 2/19/2006

I went there for brunch and was impressed by their reasonable prices. But when I got my waffle, it was only HALF a waffle! No wonder it was so affordable...it was hardly even a full meal. My party left with empty tummies, which does not bode well for brunch. The food was very tasty, but it's not a very good value AT ALL. Pros: delicious food Cons: overpriced, tiny portions more

Best Meal in Boston! 2/13/2006

I went to the Fireplace for lunch on a Friday. It was busy, but we were seated right away. We ate light, the roasted chicken ceasar salad and seafood chowder. But, I couldn't stop raving about the food all weekend long and recommending it to everyone I met. The chicken was perfectly fire roasted and moist, and the seafood chowder was the best I've ever tasted, which means something because I'm from a fishing family in Maine and we know seafood. The meal was amazing and the menu looks delicious! The new executive chef has true talent for the fire roasting entree! I wish I lived near Boston to go more often! more

A great night out! 2/5/2006

I have been to the fireplace a handful of times and each experience has been better each time. I made a reservation online without any problem, and the night we were to go we were running late, so I called the restaurant to let them know and despite our arriving even later than indicated they held our table, and were seated immediately upon arrival! Everyone from the hostess to the bus boy were extremely attentive. The Fireplace is a great place to have a romantic dinner in a cozy atmosphere without the hassle of going into the city too. If you try the fireplace chances are you'll fall in love with it like we did. I can't wait to be able to get back there! more

Terrible food, worse service 1/28/2006

I have been to the fireplace twice and was sorely disappointed. The first time the steak was burnt and chewy, and the rest of the meal average. I gave it another try: made a reservation online, called to confirm 2 days ahead of time, and they messed up the reservation. Upon arriving I was told there were no managers, nothing could be done, and there was no room to seat us. Terrible restaurant Cons: incompetent service, bad for large groups more

User review by umtincka 1/20/2006

I have been a regular at the Fireplace for over a year now. I wasn't going there when the majority of the negative reviews were written so perhaps all the problems have been sorted out! The ambience is perfect for a cold night, the food is fantastic and changes frequently enough to keep it interesting, the wine list is comprehensive and the service has always been friendly. Continues to be a favourite! Pros: Ambience, Great food Cons: Crowded, Ltd reservations more

This place is awesome! 12/7/2005

This is a great restaurant. I went on a Thursday night and it was packed!!! Once inside, I was warmed by the roaring fire and great feel of the dining room. I had a really hard time trying to decide what to order as everything is great here. I started out with a terrific salad and ended the meal with the best steak I have had in years!! This place is a great alternative to the craziness of the city and it has free parking!! There is also a fabulous selection of wines. Pros: atmosphere, food, wine more

Terrible Service 12/6/2005

I was there for brunch this past Sunday- my second time eating there. As a former waitress, I understand how the business works and I was beyond frustrated when our waiter took at least 20 minutes to even acknowledge us, and the busboy, hostess and even the manager ignored us as well. I saw the manager help older, wealthier appearing diners, but he completely ignored our table. I had to beg the busboy for water as he was refilling waters near us, and he almost refused! He responded, ""Your waiter will be coming over to take your drink order"" and started to walk away but then came back as if he was doing me a favor. Once our waiter finally arrived, he offered no explanation or apology and my coffee was cold. Never again, and not for those prices. We would have been much better off at a local diner. Pros: Nice ambience, Fireplace seating, Location Cons: Bad service, Overpriced, Cold coffee more

Great food, great atmosphere, great service! 12/6/2005

This is the best restaurant in the area. The menu changes for each season so there is always something great to try. The ambiance is warm and comforting. The food is fabulous -- fresh, flavorful, generous portions, and yummy. If you like ribs, this is your place -- they are great!!! The staff is attentive and the owner is often seen keeping a close eye on every detail. I would highly recommend this restaurant!! Plenty of parking! Pros: fireplace, fun, food more

Great spot! 12/5/2005

What a terrific place!! My experience started out with a positive feeling when I found a parking place immediately (there is a lot in the back.) As I entered the restuarant, I was greeted at once and seated within 5 minutes. I almost wished I had to wait longer because I was drinking a great glass of wine and enjoying the warm fireplace as I waited to be seated. The food is incredible -- what flavors!! The ingredients are so fresh and the food was expertly prepared. Throughout the evening, we felt pampered. I can't wait to go back to the Fireplace!!! Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Parking more

Average Food below average service 11/9/2005

I had eaten there before and wasnt impressed but thought I would try it again. When I arrived for my 8pm reservation I had to wait 30 minutes for a table. I was finally seated, given my drink and prepared to order when I was not asked but told I had to get up and move to another seat. Apparently someone reserved the one they seated me at in the dining room and the only other tables were in the bar area. We ended up leaving and needless to say, they lost me as a customer from that point on. Pros: nice wine list Cons: service, parking, service more

Great Comfort Food 10/29/2005

I was surprised by the number of negative reviews for this very nice restaurant. But I only recently discovered the Fireplace, and they may have taken the criticisms to heart and worked out the glitches. My 4 dining experiences were all very good. I was seated promptly, the waitstaff was friendly and the food was all of very good - not quite Spire or Oleana, but still noteworthy. I highly recommend the roasted chicken. It is the best that I have ever tasted. But what I like most of all- besides the good food- is the comfortable atmosphere, and the acoustics are great. You can actually hear everyone at the table! One small note that doesn't bother me in the least, but is good to be aware of, is that the portions are huge. I am getting hungry thinking about my next visit to the Fireplace. Enjoy! more

brookline village's top dining destination 3/8/2005

great little bar area with live entertainment, great house drinks, pricey but nice comfort fare more

Average food, good ambience 3/6/2005

The food here is definitely average and not very flavorful. The ambience is nice and warm though and they have tables long enough to serve big groups. I had the deer and it was OK, but not that good. more

Fireplace - pls replace your angry waitstaff 2/13/2005

I was thrilled to have a another nice restaurant in Brookline. But it didn't take long to realize ""it just isn't worth the frustation!"" On first visit, our angry waiter got our orders wrong and made no effort apologize or correct the mistake. On our most recent visit, our hostess reluctantly seated us as we interupted her conversation with another staff member, the menu took 15 mins to appear, they got our orders wrong again and when we asked for the bill our waiter rolled his eyes and puffed ""ok"" but immediately returned to conversing with another staff. The bill did not show up until we are half way out the door..that's another 15 mins later. In short we felt that we were treat with very little respect and no hospitality. Owner of Fireplace - pls do something about your waitstaff. more

A big disappointment 11/29/2004

I had been looking forward to my night out at the Fireplace but I was sorely disappointed like other reviewers. My boyfriend and I were seated promptly by our server but once we declined the wine menu, he rolled his eyes at us and all but disappeared because we were getting more food than alcohol. We ordered some raw oysters and the steak and specifically asked for the oysters first (DUH!). When both arrived together I was pretty mad especially because our server was haughty. We sent our steak back as we weren't ready for it. The oysters were great and the steak turned out to be okay and the chocolate molten cake was spectacular. But not for what we paid, the prices were out of control for only mediocre food. I don't think I will give the Fireplace a second chance or any good praise. Pros: Great atmosphere, Parking lot, Desserts & oysters Cons: , Only so-so food more

Huge Disappointment !!!! 11/22/2004

My boyfriend and I were excited to try the Fireplace. I took him on his birthday and we were sadly disappointed. Do not waste your time or your money at the Fireplace. The food is awful and very expensive! more

Great Time 9/22/2004

My girlfriend and I had dinner there 2 week ago. This place is Great. Excellent food and the service is great and most importantly not rushed. I highly recommend Pros: Friendly, Food more

SIMPLY AWFUL! 8/27/2004

I agree with the majority of the other reviewers when I say that my dining experience at The Fireplace was down right AWFUL! I made reservations, but apparently that means nothing at this restaurant. The hostess was incompetent at best and sat incomplete parties ahead of us. When we were finally seated, we had to deal with a waitress that seemed bothered to have another table. The food was way too expensive for the quality and service and frankly I thought it was disgusting. I ordered the clambake, which was served in the Boston Harbor water they scooped it out of. The only reason we stayed was to hear the band, but I will never go back to this restaurant and do not recommend it to anyone! more
