Calhoun's Banquets & Catering

We were in TN for a wedding and went out to dinner afterwards with friends. Make sure you go to this Calhoun's because it's on the river and the location is amazing! Food was great, my husband and I split a sampler platter. It had ribs, chicken, and steak with sides. I'm not from the south, but it tasted awesome to me. Ribs were tender and had great flavor. \r After dinner there is a awesome walk way down the river with benches and fountains that is perfect for walking off a little of the huge portions you just ate. Overlooking the Tennessee River near Neyland and Thompson Boling, Calhoun's is the scenic pre- and post-game boozing and eating destination for UT athletic events. Calhoun's reputation is serving fabulous ribs and while they weren't the best I've ever eaten, the ribs were tasty and meaty with little fat. Quality barbecue should have good side items, and Calhoun's met expectations there (though they were temporarily out of spinach maria, supposedly their best side). Wings, spinach dip, white chili and salads were also good. At the bar, microbrews dominate the taps. Thunder Road, Helles and their seasonal brew are fairly decent, with the seasonal tasting the best. Service was fairly good given a big crowd prior to basketball game. We actually ate/drank there before and after the game, and had a great time. If heading to a UT sporting event, I recommend you check this place out. Calhouns is perched on the bank of the Tennessee River, just down the hill from Neyland Stadium. Calhouns is known for their ribs, and they are good, but not as good as you can get at your neighborhood 'q joint. The sides are excellent, especially the spinach maria. This Calhouns has a very nice ambiance inside, and has seating area on the porch and deck overlooking the river. There is a tiki hut bar on the porch as well to serve drinks while you wait, or if you're just hanging out. In Knoxville, this is a place you must try.
