Bad food, Bad service 2/1/2006

I just went here with a few of my friends and the service was so bad. It took over an hour for our food to be served. And our meals were served at different times. Our meals started off with some miso soup, which was actually quite good. But the sashimi had little flavor and the tempura was greasy, overly breaded and tasteless. Go somewhere else for Japanese... Pros: some parking, ok price Cons: low quality food, slow service more

Why is this place so popular?! 1/23/2005

Horrible experience all 3 times I've been to Zen Sushi. Ok food, though mediocre for the price. The customer service is the worse I've ever experienced. Moody waitresses, bouncers tell you to leave and rip drinks right out of your hand (iced water!!!) if you are standing outside the restaurant talking, you pay a lot of money to be treated like garbage by the staff for no reason. I've known many who had similar experiences and known several musicians who played there claiming they were treated horribly and won't return. As a customer, I paid for overpriced food and attitude problems from multiple staff for literally for sitting in their restaurant and then going outside for a brief conversation prior to leaving. The other times I went to Zen were also unpleasant. These people need to take classes in customer service and manners because I'll most certainly never go again. Cons: , average pricey food, bad parking more

Burn Victim from Sushi Hell 4/30/2003

The WORST restaurant in LA! It took over 2 hours (1 waitress for 20 tables, sushi chef also doubled as the whole kitchen staff, busboy was the bartender) to get what we didn't order, then another half hour to find anyone who worked there to get it right. Our food finally came 3 hours after we were seated, all we could do was laugh at our own idiocy for even dealing. The food was hilariously sad, any sushi/roll ordered spicy, had black pepper sprinkled on top, two day old rice was cruchy, salads were drenched with cheap commercial Italian dressing, any other food such as stir fry was covered with some type of thick oil drained from a diesel boat sprinkled with salt. No one at my table had a second bite. When the check came, we were annoyed to be paying for inedible food. It was Hell Sushi. Pros: Absolutely No Pros Cons: Horrible Food, Not Cheap, Hunt for Service more

Terrible Experience 8/5/2002

I usually don't comment on these sites, but the horrible service here warrants it. We tried to order some things on the menu, which we were told that they were out of (such as seaweed salad)... so we ordered other things... It took an hour for our food to come back, and some of the things we ordered did not come out (such as the salmon sushi). So we asked about it, and were told after the fact, that they had run out of salmon!!! Can you believe it?? A sushi place that runs out of salmon!!! So, when the bill came, the salmon was still on the bill.... LAME! more

misleading. rude. 8/1/2002

We went in for the Happy Hour "2 for 1 at the sushi bar" special I saw advertised in a local promotion. We told the manager who sat us that we were there for that special. After eating, the bill came... no 2 for 1. When I spoke to the manager, he said we ordered items that weren't on special. I talked to him at length about how misleading the ad is, how there is no indication of restrictions (there is not even any mention of the special in the restaurant AND the sushi chef himself didn't know exactly which items were on special). With a situation this confusing, you'd think the manager would have made some concession so as to keep the customer. He gave only attitude. I will never dine there again. Going downtown to little Tokyo, where the sushi is fabulous and the people are friendly. Cons: rude manager!, expensive, slow service more

Very Average 5/21/2002

If you're looking for a sushi bar don't go here. It's more like a restaurant that also has sushi -- very average sushi. The soundtrack to The Piano played in the background during my dining experience giving me the urge to commit hare kare midway through my caterpillar roll. more

Bad service, Bad music 5/21/2002

Despite the mixed reviews, my friends and I decided to give Zen a chance. Bad choice. The sushi was bland, the portions were small and the services was slow. Two memebers of our party got their food a full ten minutes before the rest of the group. While we waited for the food they played the most depressing music...it was so bad that we asked for it to be changed...which they did. We still won't be going back. Pros: Cool ambience Cons: Slow service, Low quality more

  • In Short
You might recognize Zen Sushi if you're a mating masochist who watches reality dating shows like "Blind Date" and "The Fifth Wheel." Both have made this alluring sushi restaurant and bar the setting for many disaster dates. Bamboo-lined walls and Asian-inspired decor fill the spacious bar, which has two levels and a cushy outdoor smoking spot. The upstairs area features comfy lounge seating and a colorful Kabuki-like stage. Downstairs is like a low-key dive bar--perfect for watching aan act on the small stage in the adjoining dining area.
