Best

Best idea ever. Late night dimsum in the lounge. The food is good and the drinks are wet. Great time to be had by all.

Worst

First off, I would definitely avoid any Americanized food here. My friend ordered General Tso's (I know, I know, but it should still be edible!) and it was gloppy and greasy, not...

Finally! 1/15/2007

I gave up eating Chinese food when I moved to Portland 8 years ago. I grew tired of neon pink BBQ pork and fortune cookies. Wong's is the best Chinese in town and I will go back for sure. The variety on the menu was endless and the food reminded me of my summers in China. I highly recommend the prawns with honey walnuts. The servings are large so expect to eat family style. Pros: Clean, variety Cons: loud more

Best Dim Sum in the Portland Area 12/25/2006

Wong King's is hands down the best dim sum food that Portland has to offer. I've eaten in Hong Kong and the BC areas and although this restaurant is not quite as good as those other places, it still can hold its own. I would recommend to every dim sum lover to try Wong?s King at least once because you will not be disappointed. Also, once you?re there ask for eggplant shrimp, it?s one of my personal favorites and most of the time you have to order them. more

Best Chinese in Portland 12/11/2006

Whoever wrote the last review must be an idiot. Wong King is simply the best Chinese food there is in Portland. The chef is actually a high ranking chef in China, winning many culinary awards. Seafood dishes are, of course, their strong points. Their BBQ duck is pretty good too. Order a whole duck and they'll cut it up for you at the table and make 2 dishes out of it; one with rice buns wrapped over crispy duck skin and another that's chopped up and stir fried. Pros: excellent food, great selections Cons: long wait during weekend dim sum more

A joke of a chinese restaurant 12/3/2006

Wongs king looks nice, but the food and service is third world rated! They try to be first class chinese restaurant but is no better then your local american chinese restaurant. The food is NO WHERE UP to the standard of authentic chinese food. I been to many of the best chinese restaurant in the west coast and in asia. IF you want real chinese food go to KIRIN in richmond BC. Pros: Looks nice Cons: FOOD and SERVICE more

bes dim sum 10/25/2006

Portland's Premier Chinese Food 9/28/2006

The first time we tried Wong's King Seafood Restaurant (not to be confused with the other Wong's King outposts) we were intent on picking up a late dinner on our way home. We sat in the bar and were absolutely underwhelmed by the chilled ambience, and somewhat disinterested service. There seemed to be a meeting of some kind going on away from the bar with thirty young people around one central speaker, speaking in Chinese. There seemed to be a couple of individuals acting as semi-guards, it was all quite intriguing. The group was certainly not drinking or dining. The barstools were all occupied by guys smoking up a storm and the smoke was not pleasant at that temperature for some reason. I've nothng against smokers, mind you, but a little ventilation in a new building isn't asking for much. All that being said, our menus arrived and they were brown leatherette binders with dozens of enticing offerings, many with color pictures. We ordered King's Ribs, a shrimp fried rice, Salt and Pepper Calamari and a vegetable dish. We left, poring over the trophy cases near the entrance which housed awards the owners had won in an international competition, whetting our appetite for what was to come. We've grown tired over the years of the inconsistency of the some of the city's Chinese restaurants, the General So-So's chicken, mixed vegetables dominated by sharp tasting and unfresh ingredients, fried shrimp that are fileted in half lenghtwise before breading, etc. We arrived home and made preparations for a meal with fairly high expectations. As we sampled the Calamari, we looked at each other in surprise, this was fantastic! Long a proponent of Alexis stellar Kalamarakia, this actually was as good. Different, but every bit as exciting and well executed. The King's Ribs were astounding, apparently deep fried and sprinkled with dried garlic, laced with fresh cilantro. I've returrned many times for dim sum, takeout, lunch and clearly, Wong's King is King. Pros: Superb and varied dim sum, efficiently offered, unreal lunch plate #1 for $6; killer salt and pepper calarmari Cons: Parking lot almost always full, bar nothing to write home about more

We love it! 9/8/2006

My entire family goes as often as we can. Even the 3 year old loves it. We found the service to be fine and the different choices are great. If you go early the wait is much less. Pros: Great choices, fresh food, and clean Cons: If you get there at noon the wait can be long. Go early or late. more

sucky service 7/13/2006

I went there for lunch one day with a friend. We asked to see a menu for items other than dim sum and were rudely given one menu to share between us. When the dim sum carts rolled around, if we asked what the dishes contained, we received eye rolls and even had a server shake her arms in exacerbation and storm off. It was unreal. We tried a couple of plates of dim sum, each of which were not what was described by our server (yes, we know the difference between black bean and pork). We asked 3 servers to allow us to order from the menu. All 3 servers refused to take an order from the menu or try to assist us in any way. They do advertise dim sum as well as a full menu. Other tables were ordering plates of delicious-looking food. Wish we could have tried some. I am far from a difficult patron, and this is the worst treatment I've ever received at a restaurant in Portland. Pros: nicely decorated Cons: horrendous service more

Favorite Chinese In Portland Yet Too Popular 7/11/2006

Yeah, the prices have gone up and the service sometimes has too big of a head, but there is no denying this restaurant serves some of the best (if not THE best) Chinese in the area. Decor is nice, the food is fresh and presented well, and it seems most of the Chinese community has preferred this restaurant above the rest. Wong Fu is a funny manager, comes out to get to know his customers all the time. Pros: Food (dinner), Presentation, Ambiance Cons: Dim Sum, Crowded more

escaping bankrobbers 7/10/2006

So the police were chasing an escaped bankrobber the night we went to Wong's. It was a totally unexpectedly awesome place! The roasted squab was delish, kind of perfumy and tea-ish. I can't wait to go back and try some of the stranger things on the menu, like geoduck, duck chins, etc. Impressive service, and totally inexpensive. Can't wait to try the dim sum as well. Very excited to have found this place! more

Fu, you are the man 6/5/2006

First time I went to Wong's King, someone got shot dead 10ft from my car and I had to wait for the cops to gather evidence for 4hrs after dinner before I got to leave. Since then, I've gone back 20 more times. Their dim sum's nothing special in Taiwan or Hong Kong, but it still beats all hell out of Legin and anywhere else in Ptown outside of making your own, and making your own dumplings takes time people. The lip-smacking King's ribs everyone should try at least once, as well as their calamari, which may be the best ever anywhere, definitely in portland. Their ginger scallion crab pot with vermicelli is great as well. Some menu items aren't all that but the ones I named you can't miss with. Now if only they bought out that magazine shop next door and turned it into a beef noodle joint... Pros: Fu, calamari, king's ribs Cons: bar's too small more

Popularity has destroyed their service. 5/30/2006

The management here really needs to get a handle on how to handle the crowds. We waited over an hour (after being told 20 minutes) for a table of 3 and were skipped several times. Some groups simply went in and and sat down with no questions from the hostess. We reminded them of our party and we were told it would be another 40 minutes to wait. When finally sat they put us in the bar! The Dim Sum came infrequently and they were out of many dishes. Worse, some of the noodle dishes were undercooked. Drinks were never refilled and dirty dished were rarely removed. We actually had to go find someone in order to pay. This was a real disappointment. Pros: Sadly, none for us. Cons: Disorganized, Poor food , Bad service more

the best 4/22/2006

the best dim sum in portland... some of the best I've ever had, including multiple restaurants in Boston, Houston, Dallas, New York, San Francisco, and LA. Great choices, great service - English well-spoken - and very fresh food. Pros: everything Cons: wait is long more

Best Dim Sum in the US Pacific NW 4/15/2006

It's about time!!!!! Portlanders have had little choice when it came to Dim Sum until now. Wong's King serves the best!!! Dim Sum in town hands down. It's fresh, hot and very tasty. The service is always great and the price is unbeatable. It's Clean. Get there early or be ready for a short wait ( there is a relatively fast turnover of table in this large restaurant). If you can't get enough Chinese in the restaurant, there is a take out ministore attached that serves great BBQ Pork and Peking Duck to-go. Pros: Food, Service, Price Cons: Nothing!!! more

best dim sum place in town 3/11/2006

The dim sum is awesome, both in terms of variety (go with a big party so you can try as many different dishes as you can) and taste (authentic, delicious, and fresh). Compared to the other dim sum places in Portland, this one definitely has the best ambience (clean, spacious, relaxing but not sloppy, classy but not pretentious), and the best service (every single server is ultra courteous and attentive - both times I ate there anyway). I actually felt guilty for giving only 20% tip because the service was sooo good, and the food was sooo inexpensive (last time I went with two friends and spent only 30 bucks and all of us were stuffed). There are plenty of places in town, dim sum place or not, where the wait staff are snooty or downright rude, while the food might cost twice more. Pros: food, service, parking Cons: long lines on weekend, so... go early more
