Best

Best idea ever. Late night dimsum in the lounge. The food is good and the drinks are wet. Great time to be had by all.

Worst

First off, I would definitely avoid any Americanized food here. My friend ordered General Tso's (I know, I know, but it should still be edible!) and it was gloppy and greasy, not...

NOT SO GREAT 5/4/2008

Line was long! waited for over an hour for just a table of 3! service was slow... did not get my tea and when i asked for my tea it took another 10 mins! service was just horrible! i dont think i will ever go there again! They need to do a better job on the waiting line! On top of that all the food was luke warm! not hot didn't taste fresh just horrible over all!! I would not reccomend this restaurant. Pros: NOTHING Cons: parking, food, service, wait more

Cute outfits 3/31/2008

I love everyone's purple outfits, it makes me feel like I am on a plane. Anyway. The Dim Sum is really delicious, there is a large varierty and if you can't find something you can order it off a menu. The service is quick and they have a waiting area before you are seated because every weekend they are really busy. Pros: Food, waiting area before you are seated, parking more

Flavorful! 3/30/2008

We had never tried Dim Sum before until or neighbors took us. We didn't know what to expect and were so pleased with the selection and service. Dumplings that look boring have incredible flavor... The seafood and the shrimp dishes were not fishy and perfectly cooked. My husband loved the pork and actually tried chickens feet if that tells you anything! Can't say enough about this place, it's a must try! more

Dim Sum? You have got to be kidding me! 3/25/2008

Do not go there for Dim Sum! We took friends and boy were we disappointed! There was A HAIR in the Har Gow! We have been here many times after that but never for Dim Sum again! And one tip, always search the food before taking a bite for hair. There is one restaurant I would recommend to you if you are looking for great Chinese food and don't care about the atmosphere ad fish tanks around you proving that the Seafood is fresh, OM down the street! more

For Chinese Food Gourmets Only 3/15/2008

Moved to Portland 5 years ago, had completely given up on finding great Chinese food. Then I went here. more

great food but avoid weekend dim sum mob scene 2/3/2008

Having sampled more than 2 dozens of Chinese restaurants in CA, WA, OR, Vancouver BC, Wong's King is probably the best authentic Chinese food restaurant in the pacific NW although there are many more in Vancouver, BC that are better than most restaurants stateside. This is really the place for authenic Chinese food with minimal service at best and weekend crowds tend to make it little irritating at time. Unfortunately for those ppl giving this place low reviews are often used to eating take out Chinese food and paying high prices. If you want atmosphere and mediocre Chinese food, get ripped off at PF Chang's or just opt for a quiet night eating at home with Panda express take out since Pork fried rice, orange chicken, or chow mein is not really Chinese food any way. For those who care more about the quality and quantity of food like a family style restaurant, you cannot beat Wong's King. more

Couldn't get out fast enough 12/20/2007

After reading good reviews we decided to try Wongs King. It was one of the most bizarre and disappointing restaurant experiences we've ever had. Here are the problems: Pros: It gave us a weird dining story to tell people Cons: is the whole thing a cult from outer space? more

Bad service, horrible atmosphere, ok food 11/5/2007

First off, I would definitely avoid any Americanized food here. My friend ordered General Tso's (I know, I know, but it should still be edible!) and it was gloppy and greasy, not to mention barely warm. My house special wonton soup was delicious, but the other stuff we ordered was just plain old ok. The atmosphere in this restaurant is awful - BRIGHT lights, one huge rectangular room with tables scattered everywhere - feels like eating in a high school auditorium. You don't have just one server here - anyone walking around is fair game, and no one was particularly friendly, especially when we asked food questions. I would rather eat less authentic food somewhere more plesant any day. Pros: Lots of parking, cocktails Cons: Lack of ambience, poor service, mediocre food, expensive more

Probably as good a Chinese restaurant as there is in PDX. 10/30/2007

Considering a wedding was in progress during our first ever visit, the staff was highly accomdating and the food top notch. Bonus points for having a fairly large parking lot. and a large modern, almost Vegas looking establishment though a turn off to some, seems to fit.. more

Excellent catering service 9/17/2007

For my friend's birthday party, I used Wong's King catering service. The manager and I sat down and decided menu that suits my budget. The manager was very helpful and advised me what dishes are suitable for catering and what are not. On the day of party, they delivered food to my house on time and set up everything for me. All the guests were impressed with the food and I did not have to cook at all. I will definitely use Wong's King for my next party. Pros: excellent service, fresh food Cons: small portions more

Great customer service. 8/20/2007

Not the typical hole in the wall Chinese restaurant. Fancy big restaurant that has great service. Serving food is kind of slow but most of the dishes are fantastic. I recommend the Peking duck when eating with a large group. I usually get this when eating there. Pros: Great customer service and clean. Cons: A little pricey. more

Two Thumbs Up - Best Cantonese Dim Sum in Portland, Oregon USA 8/4/2007

Please do not listen to these people who are giving these ridiculous 1-3 star comments, claims to lousy service, authentic food that they are not used to, etc. Seems like these people are just too used to the old Chinese-American style foods and have very little to absolutely no idea of what real Cantonese dim sum is all about. Yes, the food here is not top-notch compared to the kind you find in Hong Kong, China, or even California, Vancouver, BC, (never been to NY, but I would expect it to be pretty good there) as well. But for a town like Portland, it's easily 4 out of 5 stars for effort, variety, and authenticity. more

Great Chinese food! 6/22/2007

My friend wanted good Chinese food for his birthday, so I decided to take him to Wong's King, even though I'd never been there before. It was a great pick! The service was attentive and friendly. We had crunchy, flavorful egg rolls with a great dipping sauce. For dinner, we ordered beef & Chinese broccoli, sweet and sour chicken, and prawns with honey walnuts. Each dish was delicious. The beef was tender, the chicken was crunchy (not mushy from sitting in the sauce), and the prawns were plump and sweet. It was a wonderful and inexpensive meal-- an appetizer and three entrees left us (my friend, his girlfriend, and me) stuffed for just $40. more

Best Chinese Cuisine 5/19/2007

This is the best chinese restaurant I've been to. The service there is great as well as the food and atomosphere. They have the most amazing honey walnut prawns, peking duck and some dishes that I've never seen anywhere else. Like king's spareribs, ribeye steak with enoki mushroom rolls and so much more, they have a huge menu and the dim sum is to die for. It was well worth the wait. It's the only place in Oregon that can even compare to china itself. I'd highly recommend this place to anyone who likes genuine quality chinese cuisine. Pros: Award winning chefs and dishes, Service, Clean. Cons: no reservation during dim sum hours more

Overall good service albeit inconsistent, good food somewhat spendy 4/5/2007

- Among the only 2 really for real dim sum (Legin is the other) and top 5 for 'hong-kong style' chinese (legin, gold garden, om seafood, shenzhen the others). Pros: Quality of Food, Capability of Chef Cons: Ambience (not fancy), parking, price more

Tepid food; disinterested servers 3/6/2007

This is my first time on citysearch. I, like another reviewer, need to let folks know of our experience. After reading a number of ""highly recommended"" reviews, I was UP for a great new experience. We stopped on the way home, parked fine, no problem getting seated. We're very obviously NOT Chinese, or even Asian. It would have been nice if the servers explained the process a little. We ordered a very nice chicken garlic dish and some soup. Yes, very subtle flavors. But the food arrived tepid, after an unusually long wait -- when we ordered there were only 2 other tables of diners and at about 6 servers. The price seemed way high for what we ordered. And I did begin to feel I was an interloper, being Caucasian and all. When I asked questions, I was unable to understand the language and began using my ""Ugly American"" pointing, smiling encouragingly method. The server made what sounded like a three-word response and then walked away. I really do like learning new things. I might be tempted to go back to try the dim sum. Maybe. But there are any number of dim sum places I'd try before going back to this place more

Before you go... 2/26/2007

Since we had not been here before, we weren't sure what to expect. I wish someone had warned me about the bright lights. This restaurant is lit up with a number of huge chandeliers, so bright you felt like your table is on the 50 yard line at a friday night football game. With the added noise from the vast amount of diners, this is not a place to have a relaxing dinner. more

Authentically Chinese and Great Dim Sum 2/6/2007

This is an amazing Dim Sum restaurant! The dishes are very authentic, and those from China will tell you it is very similar to what they would find in their home country. If you are more used to an ""American"" taste, start with the Shumai or the Dumplings, then work your way to the dishes that look more unfamiliar and keep an open mind. The trick here is not to get too much of one thing. Just get one small plate and wait until you've seen all the carts before settling on getting another plate of the same dish. Pros: The culture, the food, the ambience...all very authentically Chinese! Cons: Parking--the place is incredibly busy seemingly all the time! Don't risk an accident to park in the lot. Off-street is best. Also, be prepared for a 30-40 minute wait pretty much every time. more

Dim Sum Good. Treating you like an ignorant American Bad! 2/2/2007

I read the most recent review of this place and had to post a comment. While my experience at Wongs was not a good one I can appreciate good food when I come across it. I did not appreciate the service that I recieved while here but felt that the dim sum was very good. The person who wrote the the previous review obviously does not know what dim sum is and was looking for something more like panda express. If you are looking for broccoli and beef and fried rice then authentic chinese cuisine is not in your vocabulary. While the menu has offerings such as those for picky non adventurous americans I don't suggest they come to a place that specializes in so much more. The haw gow and the hom bow as well as the duck feet are so delicious that I couldn't imagine why someone would order a plate of sweet and sour chicken unless they were an ingnorant tasteless being. I do have to admit that the service here was terrible and that the table that they seat you at determines the service that you receive. Not to mention that the seating is preferential due to your ethnicity. Pros: Dim Sum Cons: Poor seating and not fair in seating American customers more

Gut bomb 1/24/2007

I just finished my first meal at this place after I heard good things. Those things were false. Everything I ordered was disgusting. I spent almost $30 on an entree, fried rice and appetizer and I couldn't eat a quarter of it. I can honestly say that this was the worst chinese food I've ever eaten, and I've eaten in some divey places. I was so disgusted about how bad the food was that I signed up for citysearch just to keep people from eating at this place. The ""chicken"" fried rice was bland and rubbery. The molgolian ""beef"" was far too soft and fatty and if you can believe that scezhuan can be bland, it was. The crab puffs were the best thing I had and the fried exterior was chewy and doughy instead of being light and crispy. I really can't say enough bad things about this place. I've heard that there is no good chinese food in Portland and if this place (getting a 9.1 on citysearch before I went) is any indication, I'll drive to seattle before I eat chinese in this town again. DID I SAY DISGUSTING??!??! If it was that bad going in, I can only imagine how bad it will be coming out. I've already got a gut ache. Steer clear of this place if you like good food and want to avoid stomach pain. Cons: Everything more
