Impeccable preparation and ingredients are the hallmarks of this Austin institution. Go with friends during social hour and order one of everything-- you won't be sorry!

Worst

I've eaten sushi all over the world, including Nobu. Uchi is just silly. The host staff was pretentious and somewhat rude (girl with short black hair) and the food is just plain m...

uchi#1 10/18/2003

ive been going to Uchi since they first opened. the place is beautiful and the food outstanding. All of these people with negative reviews need to get a life and realize what a gem Uchi is to austin. Pros: food, decor, location more

unbelievable!!! 9/21/2003

Uchi is the best food ive had in Austin since i moved here last year from San Fransico. The tuna and goat cheese dish is amazing!!!! im so glad to find such a great new place. i highly recommend it to anyone looking for something new. hats off to uchi! keep it up! Pros: innovative, taste, wallpaper Cons: crowded more

Outstanding 9/8/2003

My husband and I visited Uchi shortly after its opening and left impressed. Having spent the summer traveling and eating sushi in several places (including NYC), we decided to see how it measured up. We were very pleasantly surprised. Uchi is an outstanding blend of traditional sushi, Asian fusion and South Austin style. Chef Tyson Cole is to be commended for creating a world class sushi restaurant! I would recommend it highly to anyone, including sushi aficionados Pros: Excellent service, Fresh fish, Cool style more

First Timer 9/4/2003

I had not had sushi before. But a group of my friends asked me to join them to a new sushi restaurant that they wanted to try. It was Uchi. WOW! What an experience, my previous idea of sushi was only HEB and California rolls? This place was off the hook! The flavors, the presentation, and what a great décor. Uchi takes everything that you think you know about sushi and corrects it. Service A+, Food A+, really no fishy taste at all!! I was very impressed, Thanks Uchi you made a sushi fan out of me. Pros: Service, Food, Presentation Cons: Little Expensive, for Austin more

all style! no substance! 9/2/2003

I was really impressed with the decor of the place when I walked in but that was the only thing I was impressed with. The food was just not very good and the service was even worse. The food was bland and blah. The servings were also the smallest in town. I've eaten at almost every sushi place in town and I can honestly say I've had better sushi at some buffets. I'm usually pretty easy on the wait staff but our waitress was just awefull. We had to remind her to give us plates to eat on and it took a while for her to get to it. If you want to go to place that is in a nice building and don't care about the food. This is your place. more

Uchi iss soushe numba wawn 8/26/2003

I'm a regular at Uchi. Uchi's been open only 3 months and now i only get my sushi from here. Uchi is 1of2 places in town that do NOT get their fish from a local distributer, but through NYC. Fish is fresh everywhere, but at Uchi it's a matter of quality. I don't know what happened with the previous 2 people, but Uchi is a place that takes care of its customers. The waitstaff are all highly experienced, no highschoolers. Nick's the smoothy in the glasses. Decor is soothing and pleasant. Lighting is perfect. Food is always innovative and flavorful. Uchi isn't the cheapest place, however, it's the best. But for the tremendous dining experience that it is, i'll always be glad to shell out that extra dollar. i strongly urge you to ignore the previous reviews, go to uchi yourself, and discover the sushi shangrila of south austin. Pros: Tyson Coles, Quality Fish, Decor Cons: Small Parking Lot more

Ouchi! 8/25/2003

What a major disapointment! The sushi is the worst that I've ever had. No taste! Prices are high, servings are small. Be prepared to leave hungry or broke or even both! We had the scallop scewers which were good but a tad salty, the spicy tuna roll which was dry and bland (spicy mayo served on the side), the eel roll (don't remember the exact name they used) it was bland and dry and we had the giant clam special which was tasty but again salty like the scallops. The worst, was the service! The waitress was rude, pretentious, slow and forgetful. We were also charged (group of 6) 18% gratuity for BAD service! I will NEVER go here again and I am recommending that no one I know wastes their time or money on this place! Pros: Decor Cons: Bland Sushi, Small Serving size, Bad Service more

ughi 8/25/2003

I was very unhappy with Uchi. The service was absolutely horrible. Our waitress was bothered by any questions we had and was extremely unfriendly. The sushi was NOT good. The taste was really bland and the portions were tiny. Pros: ambiance Cons: cost, bad tasting food more

Outstanding- best sushi in Austin 7/16/2003

Very inventive, with a wide array of menu choices. I found heaven on a skewer when I tried the big eye tuna sashimi with a piece of watermelon. He loves to pair the freshest fish with fruit and other non-traditional fare. The hot rock is awesome, reminds me of Tei Tei in Dallas (the best sushi in big D). It's definitely not cheap, but if you want the best quality sushi with the most exotic flavors, this is your place. The atmosphere is wonderful too. Musoshino and Kenichi, watch out!! Pros: Quality, Originality, Atmosphere more

dissapointment... 6/19/2003

the food selection was incredibly small, but definitely not as smaill as the size of their dishes. A $7 appetizer is literally two bite sizes. I spent well over $45 on my dinner alone and still left feeling quite unsatisfied. However, wonderful decor and atmosphere...i just wished they had put some thought into their tiny psuedo-exotic dishes. more

Great atmosphere and sushi 6/4/2003

As one of the reigning sushi-teers in Austin I give this place Kudos! I have had the pleasure of watching the transformation from the old French restaurant where is seriously lacked a decent decor to Uchi where the decor is reminiscent of Japan. With the late afternoon/early evening sun setting the asthetic was great. Although the sushi is pricey, it is good and the service was great. The menu is more diverse than most sushi joints. But I believe Uchi is more of a Japanese Restaurant than a sushi place. If you like to be thrifty with your sushi, this place is not for you, but if you are into quality, fresh fish and experiencing some different flavors Uchi is the place for you. My next vist I plan to partake in the Hot Rock...you are given a Hot Rock with raw beef and you sear it yourself....looks delicious. Pros: Quality Food, Great Decor, Good Location Cons: Expensive more
