Impeccable preparation and ingredients are the hallmarks of this Austin institution. Go with friends during social hour and order one of everything-- you won't be sorry!

Best sushi in Austin 3/2/2012

Love, Love, Love this place!!! Our last trip to Austin we decided to eat at Keniche because we had such a great experience at the Keniche in Hawaii....Not the same in Austin!! We walked out after seeing the crowded grandly crowd and a bad experience with a very rude bartender. We asked around and found UCHI....SO glad we did!! The atmosphere was perfect, the sushi was unique, super fresh and delis and the service was impeccable. They also have a great selection of Saki and tastings... Love this place!! more

Over-hyped, bad hostesses 8/2/2011

Overrated. We ended up walking out after first appetizer due to lack of service among other things. Very frustrating experience. Sushi appetizer was ok, but not worth suffering through the cramped waiting/bar area, noise levels, dealing with ditzy hostesses (who we saw wrote our name down, and we had to even spell it for her, but she later denies and says we are not on the list...), and therefore having to wait far too long for a table. We love sushi--have ordered it in many other countries and other American cities. Trust me--this place is not about the sushi and food, but hood-winking Austinites into thinking that this is the best place ever. Based on some ratings here, it is working. We know better--not returning. more

Delicious!!!!!!!! 2/27/2011

Seriously, the best Sushi in Austin by far, and among the best I've ever had. more

fantastic 2/20/2011

I have been eating here for years and the quality and presentation of the food just keeps getting better. I was concerned that the level of service and food would decrease with the opening of their 2nd restaurant but it did not. I only wish that they took reservations. Dustin more

Austin's Best Restaurant 5/30/2010

Is waiting 2 hours to be seated on a warm muggy Sunday night and then being presented with a $180 tab for three worth it? Most definitely, if you want to explore your gastronomic limits to the fullest. Fresh is the key word to describe the fish. Flavor comes to mind when experiencing the meal. Tyson Cole brings it all to the table with each creative selection. The well trained wait staff never appears in a rush as they present and explain each serving in detail. What a delight to find such great service and amazing food! It's beyond expectations. Pros: Fresh Fish, flavorful& creative Cons: Wait to be seated, pricy more

A Ridiculous Sushi Kabuki 5/15/2010

I've eaten sushi all over the world, including Nobu. Uchi is just silly. The host staff was pretentious and somewhat rude (girl with short black hair) and the food is just plain mediocre. The quality of the food product is high, but the sushi chefs are not at all professional. the rolls were not well compacted nor organized. The median age looks to be 28, which means that you are getting junior chefs. The best sushi shops should have an average age for chefs of at least 45. The non-sushi dishes were small and over-seasoned and the drink selection is ridiculously limited. All in all the atmosphere is akin to a Japanese steakhouse chain....good kabuki but no substance. I recommend finding something with more meat and experience. Pros: Grade of Sushi Cons: Pretense, Preparation more

Fantastic 1/11/2010

Went to Uchi at 6 pm on a Friday, best time, as the place is just starting to rev up and the servers are fresh and friendly. Got some of that great unfiltered sake in a box on special, then sat back and let them bring whatever they cared to make for us.\r \r Everything put before us was utterly fantastic; whoever brought the dish to us would explain what it was, and how to approach the dish both from a taste perpective and from how to physically approach eating it (fork, chopsticks, etc).\r \r Service was extremely friendly. They would stop by after each course (I think we got 8-9) and ask how it was.\r \r The bill was high, but it was an occaision. Pros: Omakase Cons: Crowded more

Cheap Atmosphere limited food selection 11/18/2009

Maiko sushi is 100x better than this place with a much better atmosphere. Sushi blows Uchi out of the water. I WILL NEVER GO BACK!! IT WAS HORRIBLE!!!! Pros: hot towels before meal Cons: plain tasting food more

Good Happy Hour 10/22/2009

Went to Uchi a couple weeks ago for the 5th or 6th time, but it was my 1st time to go for Happy Hour. They had pretty good happy hour prices. I think the spicy crunchy tuna was $7 and sake is $3... I will definitely be back. more

Loudy non-chic place 7/4/2009

I went to Uchi to celebrate my wedding anniversary, and this was the mistake. The place is very loudy, as if you were in a street market, everybody shouting. Food: sushi is good, but everything that is fusion is terrible. I´ve been eating in some of the best restaurants in the world and their raw tuna & goat cheese (which they are so proud of) makes no sense at all. Their chocolate sorbet was also made of very poor chocolate quality. Pros: Sushi Cons: Salads and fusion more

Too Expensive 5/23/2009

Good atmosphere, but that was the most expensive place for the amount they serve. Great Service, nice waitstaff, but the food is extremely expensive. Reminded me of an over priced Hollywood hangout adhering to rich celebs. I used to live in Vancouver and for the meal we had tonight, would have spent 1/8 of the amount. We wont go back for this reason... Pros: The cooking stone Cons: The price of Sushi more

Great food 5/8/2009

A few weeks ago I went to Uchi for the first time after hearing about it from a few other friends that are sushi fans. I took a date out to the restraunt and there was a wait so we hung out for a bit before being sat. When we were sat our waitress came up to us and took our drink order. When she came back I decided I wanted a seaweed salad with octupus 1 for each of us. She proceeded to ask me if I've ever had this and go on to explain very poorly how their seaweed salad is different from the seaweed salad we are used to (it seemed she was trying to talk us out of getting it) anyways we sat for a few minutes before someone came by and dropped 1 seaweed salad off at our table. I looked around and it sat in the middle of the table for a few minutes because we were'nt going to start eating at different times. After having to flag our waitress down she said she thought we only ordered one and ran to get another one. While she was in the back someone brought us out 2 delicious soups and when our waitress returned with the 2nd salad (the other one by this time was not fresh like it should've been and I could taste it, I gave my date the fresh 1) she said ""Enjoy those soups that are on us I guess?"" so someone made another mistake but this time it benefited us so thats a plus. After the salads we were brought the most delicious appetizer. I believe it was called an avocado bake. Trust me and try it if you go but the huge problem was that we were'nt giving any utensils to eat it with. The amazing looking appetizer sat in front of us for at least 3-4 minutes. By this time I was really feeling just ignored. The only person who was taking care of us was this AWESOME server assistant. He was tall bald and older than myself (sorry if you read this s.a. just wanted to include you in this and i dont know your name so i thought i'd describe you lol ) anyyyways I didnt want to complain because my date was in town from Cali. and I wanted to have a nice evening. She did point out the poor service though. By the end of the meal I just expected more to go wrong. Our waitress didnt talk to us and I'd of rather tipped the S.A. A BIG positive was when our sushi was dropped someone who looked like a manger dropped our sushi rolls off to us and explained all the food with great detail, I was impressed. I'd like to close saying I am a waiter at a very nice restraunt that I won't name for several reasons. Great food not a great waitress. I hope to never give service like the service that was given to me here. Pros: Food Cons: Waitress more

uchi thinks it super cool 4/14/2009

uchi has really gone down hill from the heights they once were. the portion sizes get smaller each time i go, and don't bother ordering off the specials page. i had a truly horrible lobster dish there the last time i went. \r \r it just seems like this place has lost its sheen. maybe its because the head chef is NEVER there. the waiters seem pretty full of themselves, and honestly kind of put out to even be at work.\r \r fav menu items:\r \r carpaccio, crunchy tuna roll, great toro, and a yummy peanut butter dessert. \r Pros: excellent fish...most of the time Cons: snobby, loud, don't bother with the cooked food more

Best restaurant I've ever been to... REALLY! 12/3/2008

Amazing restaurant with amazing food every time. Try everything when you go (not just the stuff that doesn't scare you). The people watching is fun when you have to wait outside and the servers and cocktail waiters are awesome.\r \r I highly recommend going before you get hungry as you'll probably have to wait a long time for a table. If you are with a significant other, SIT AT THE SUSHI BAR. It's a great experience. Let them put together the meal for you. The goat cheese and apple sashimi is amazing. Pros: The food is amazing. The servers are very nice. Fun atmostphere. Cons: Bar and sushi bar are both too small. Long wait. more
