Editorial review from Citysearch 10/8/2013

I have been a regular customer here for over 3 years. I visited on 10/7/13 and was appalled by the service and the way my friend and I were treated. I arrived and sat at a table, Lana Amer (waitress) approached our table and upon looking us over, decided we had to prepay our dinner. I have lived in this neighborhood my entire life and have never heard of such a thing. I questioned the ""prepay policy"" and asked to speak to the manager. The manager on duty took his time coming over and was having a lengthy discussion with Lana. I became upset and got out of my chair and approached the pair. The manager had the audacity to repeat exactly what the waitress stated that there is a ""prepay"" policy at Tonic. At the end of our meal, I approached the manager again and asked if it was also policy for Lana, the waitress to only visit our table once and never return. I was forced to reach out to another waitress who helped us. I WAS NEGATIVELY STEREOTYPED - something that has never happened to me. I WILL NEVER RETURN!!! I will also make sure that everyone I know never returns to this restaurant/bar. I AM DISGUSTED!!! more

Love/ Hate 2/26/2012

Some of the bouncers are complete megalomaniacs! My friend got thrown out for ""looking at me the wrong way"". WHAT THE HELL?!? Some nights it's a lot of fun, and some nights... well. I'd rather be anywhere else. It's a total 50/50. Good luck. more

like a prehistoric tribe of guidos hocked up on moose hormon 12/30/2011

read everyone elses reviews- theyre animals, jersey shore rejects, the dark side of new york- up until now, i was glad i left iowa; but now- i dont even know who i am anymore. more

alright bar, terrible staff 12/4/2011

i read a lot of these reviews about the hostile staff memebers and thought- well it cant be that bad... boy was i wrong! i personally had no problems but witnessed several altercations take place between patrons and the bouncer- even patron and the batender- how does a BARTENDER get into a fight with bar goers? the music and atmosphere is alright, however and IF i happended to be in the area and decided that i was really parched at the moment i may give this house of cretans a try- but enter at your own risk! more

welcome to the jungle- completely barbaric staff, stay away! 11/30/2011

if you read all the other reviews, youll see that they basically echo the same sentiments as mine- the bouncers and owner were exteemly obnoxious and malignant , not very shy about roughing people up for no good reason- im glad they didnt put their hands on me! those guys were like 300 pounds each!! more

Disgusted 10/31/2011

Disgusted. The bouncers and owner are on a serious power trip and do not respect their customers. Let's keep in mind that the CUSTOMERS are the ones who pay the bills and keep your business running. They forcefully & when I mean forcefully (put in a headlock, drop kicked, shoved) out customers this past weekend regardless if you were a guy or girl, They are animals that to say the least might need to step away from the steroids. Will never go back & hope no one does as well. more

HORRIBLE 10/30/2011

I WISH there was a HATE button. Absolutely awful. Everyone from the owner to the bouncers were the poorest excuses for human beings and needless to say you could not pay me enough to go back to this place. Sitting at a table halloween night, after easily dropping over 600$, a man comes over to our table and starts mopping, hitting us in the legs and telling us to get the ""f*** out of the way."" After responding jokingly back, ""hey its alright were almost done give us a minute"" to prevent a dramatic situation, we thought that was that. Two huge black men come and grab my boyfriend and throw him out of the club by the neck. Then they come back for my guy friend and his girlfriend. I grab our stuff and run downstairs to coat check. Not over... Now, the coat check girl shuts the door and is back there with a guy. Another guy comes and says ""shes busy in there. You can get your coat another time."" Waited 30 minutes and still no coat. STILL NOT OVER. My friend realizes that after finally getting her coat back, her camera is stolen out of the jacket pocket. She attempts to made it back inside and the bouncer kicks her in the chest and she goes flying on the curb. Seconds later, the bouncer does the same to her boyfriend, which was immediately followed by the bouncer grabbing an innocent kid by the throat telling him to ""get the f*** out of his club."" The owner came out, laughed in our faces, and dared us to call the cops. This place is currently under investigation and a heavy lawsuit. DO NOT GO HERE. IF U WANT TO BE CHOKED, KICKED AND STOLEN FROM, THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU. more

WHAT A GREAT PLACE ! 10/21/2011

Good Times 7/26/2011

Came to Tonic with a group of friends for dinner and drinks. Its your typical pub food, which was good. People and bartenders were all very friendly, rooftop had awesome ambience and music was good. Only compliant is the selection of the happy hour drinks and the happy hours did not apply to the rooftop. All-in-all a good time with good friends. more

I wish i could give negative stars to this place. Not for the music or the decor but for the service. We went out for a friends birthday party and went to the rooftop and ordered a bottle. We indicated that we would like to split the bill between cash and card. The waitress brought me the bill and asked me to sign for my portion on the card. End of story? NOT BY A LONGSHOT. Turns out that she charged us the entire amount of the bill then decided that somehow the mistake would magically go away and charged me again for my portion. She didnt even have the courtesy to tell me about the mistake so that I could make arrangments so that my bank account would not go negative. I did not find out until the next day when it was already too late. To add insult to injury the owner is being a jackass and not returning my calls and the according to management they dont process returns directly. So now im stuck with a negative balance and 175 in overdraft charges until my banks fraud department settles the dispute. Also, the waitress charged us 46 for 4 shots when we got the same shots at 6 for 48. Doesnt add up. Long story short go find a better place where the service is better and the waitresses arent stupid and the owner isnt a jackass. more

love 11/18/2010

I love going to tonic. I am a huge fan of the music videos that play on the TVs all night. The bar tenders are awesome. Definitely a great place to go with friends. more

Just plain not nice 11/14/2010

Stayed on this block with friends and thought we would check out tonic one night. Looked like a fun crowd. The three of us went up to the second floor to find the roof top rented out to a private party. Ok no biggie, the girl at the stairway was nice and said the party would be over soon. We went into the bar area of the second floor and got drinks, they were good, reasonable priced. more

Great spot for the summer!! 10/6/2010

Very nice place... prices for drinks were cheap... the environment was really good... the girls were hot.. and all my friend had a blast..... highly recommended more

Needs Better Happy Hour Drinks 8/8/2010

This is a great place it's 3 floors. The staff is great very friendly. There drinks are good rather reasonable. There Happy Hour is very limited they have $5 dollar cosmos and draft beer $4 so not much to choose from, and it doesn't apply to roof top which kinda sucks. They have huge big screens so the Yankee game was on that was a check plus. The food is good rather reasonable as well. Overall great experience, just wish they had a better selection of happy hour drinks. more

Great Location & Happy Hour Specials 6/22/2010

I headed to Tonic East for a friend's birthday at about 6 on a Friday evening. We wanted to sit on the roof because it was a beautiful spring day but were told that their happy hour deals ($3 well drinks!) were not applicable on the roof. We moved downstairs and sat near the front windows (it was almost like being on the roof....) and were told that we were not allowed to order from the bar, we needed to order from the cocktail waitress. After ordering one round, the waitress disappeared for nearly 30 minutes - until happy hour was almost over! Thank goodness our bill was so minimal or we would have been cranky! This is a great place to head for after work drinks, but I'd advise buying drinks at the downstairs bar and carrying them up to the roof :} Pros: Excellent happy hour, roof top with great view Cons: Strange exceptions to their happy hours more

bad service 3/15/2010

went last nighy. asked for amstel that was on tap and bartender gives me a bottle. asked for beer that os on tap. he gives it to me and throws the pen to sign the bill. that aint service not matter what city you live in. i earned my money and the beer. show some respect. more

loud and crowded, great rooftop 10/6/2009

went there last thurs for my friend's bday. there was a good crowd for a thursday night. we couldn't get a table so we had to order from the bar, which was better on the first floor than the second. one bartender who seemed like he didn't know what he was doing made our drinks wrong and then refused to even try to fix them, but the tall blonde girl was really nice about it and made sure we were taken care of, so it was okay. she even gave us a round of ""birthday cake"" shots for my friend. overall, the crowd was a little too jersey for me, but we had a good time. would prob go back on a night when its less packed. Pros: music videos, good views Cons: a little too b&t more

Good until the end 9/28/2009

So today a family member and i went into tonic. We had a waitress name Andrea who seemed sweet in the begining. She made us feel welcome and gave me a compliment on my earrings, anyway. Later when my family member and i were finished we asked for the check, once she gave it to us i used my gift card that i got from Tonic to pay, I didn't have any big bills on me all i had was three dollars so i called her over gave her the three dollars, the only money i had on me to her i said ""I'm sorry i can't give more but here this is all i have, i'm sorry"". She said that my three dollars was ""Unacceptable and that she at least makes twenty to thirty dollars in tips"". So being the nice person that i am i gave her my gift card for her to try to take twenty dollars out of there and when she couldn't she came back and slightly threw my card to the table and said nastily ""I can't take the money out so...."" and just walks away. I got up to leave and i didn't even want to see her face because she was rude for saying what she said. She is caucasian with green eyes and short, i thought she was nice but when things didn't go her way she turned into a green eyed monster, even though i still have money on my card i am never going back there again because of her, thanks a lot andrea. Pros: Great food Cons: Horrible Waitress more

Great place for a group 6/15/2009

I went there with some friends the other night and our bartender, Conor McCartan, was awesome!! Very friendly and great service! He treated us well...we will be back! Pros: Great bartender!! more

Fun for a night with friends 1/12/2009

I went to Tonic for Happy Hour after work with some friends. They played awesome music...everything from 80's to the new hits. They have this wheel that you spin during happy hour- who doesn't like winning a free drink? Before we knew it, it was 10pm- time flies when you're having so much fun. Overall, this is a great place for a chill happy hour after work. I definitley recommend checking it out! more
