An excellent experience 10/16/2007

Master Gohring has asked that I share my experiences with the readers. I have been a student in his Tiger Crane Kung Fu program since February, and I love it. My family first found to Master's Gohring's school from an ad in Austin Family as an activity for my son, and my wife (who takes Tai Chi) and my son and I are all now his students. I've seen a number of benefits from training with Master Gohring: increased flexibility and stamina, more energy, and a group of encouraging, enthusiatic people around me. I won't lie, it is difficult, and you will be tired at the end of each class. But you feel great afterwards too. Also, I was recently away from class for several weeks (I bought a house!), and welcomed back with a smile from everyone at the school. I HIGHLY recommend anyone considering studying the martial arts to consider Master Gohring's Tai Chi and Kung Fu. more

Transformation from Cub to TIGER 10/10/2007

I have been bringing my son Samuel to Master Gohring's class for almost two years now and during this time he has shown great promise. Originally I enrolled him into the class to learn self-defense due to bullies picking on him at school. What Samuel has learned goes further than just self-defense, he has learned and gained knowledge of the Kungfu art and how to incorporate these teachings into everyday life. Samuel's focus in school has improved tremendously, his patience is getting better when it comes to problem solving and his drive to due his best in whatever has improved. Faith, Respect, Perseverance, Patience and Humility is what Master Gohring teaches his students and Sifu's patience with the students and love for the art is what helps all the students understand and enjoy Kungfu and Tai Chi. Samuel really enjoys Kungfu and I really enjoy taking him to class and being around such a cool atmosphere. Lookout bullies the Cub has become the Tiger. more

NO SUCH THING AS "TOO OLD" IN TAI CHI 10/9/2007

I began Tai Chi in Jan. 2005. My first question was “am I too old to start this”. My expectations at the time were simply for stress relief and exercise that would be gentle on my joints, especially my knees. Now seven sashes later, I’m about to graduate to Brown Sash while celebrating my last year in my fifties. My expectations of stress relief and “soft” exercise have been far exceeded. Through the excellent teaching of Master Gohring and his staff, I am able to accomplish things I never thought I could possibly do when I stepped through the door. The benefits of core strength, proper breathing, balance and focus become a part of you while learning the Tai Chi forms, something that I can use daily in my life, not just when in class. Although the applications of each of the moves in the form has never been my strong point, at this level and after a lot of patience on my part and that of Master Gohring and staff, I am finally realizing the power of the form. Although I was asked if I could write a review, I gladly do so and recommend Master Gohring’s Tai Chi for anyone that would like to learn in a caring experienced environment. more

Comprehensive Self-improvement 10/8/2007

After almost a year at Master Gohring's Tai Chi and Kung Fu, I can definitely say that his program is more expansive and comprehensive than any other martial arts studio I have trained at. He presents a wide variety of styles and an ever-increasing array of forms and drills with which to improve one's awareness of the body, self-defense skills and overall health. Empty-hand, weapon, external, internal, fast, slow - it's all there to hone different areas of your mind and body, but Sifu Gohring also retains a traditional code of martial ethics, forming a spiritual framework that elevates his classes from sport training into a life practice. It's not a cult, a religion, or any other subversive faction, but an additional way of approaching the challenges of life with focus, humility, and determination. Master Gohring requests we review his work as part of our graduation application, in addition to the benefits of making us meditate on what we have learned, this shows his constant desire for feedback to make sure he is meeting the student's needs and improving his teaching. Part of his humility admits that no matter one's station, there is always room for improvement, and he practices the focus and determination which by example to show us that reaching our goals is a possibility in within our grasp. more

Best gift to myself 10/8/2007

I joined Master Gohring's Tai Chi and King Fu in June of 2007. Although I have only been a student a short time, I have already experienced a variety of benefits from practicing tai chi. Master Gohring asked me to share some of my experiences with people here, and I am more than happy to help! I started taking tai chi as a gift to myself - something I hadn't done much of in the past. I knew that increasing my activity would be a benefit in and of itself, but I have also seen an increase in energy, balance, and flexibility. I feel better after class than I ever did at the gym. When I miss class, I truly miss being there; when I missed going to the gym, I was relieved to avoid laundry! Any anxiety I had about being out of shape or uncoordinated were quickly dispelled. Master Gohring makes every student feel successful, no matter how small the accomplishment may seem. Even a small correction in position can suddenly make the whole posture make sense! It's these small successes that bolster my confidence and make traveling the path to becoming a Black Sash so enjoyable. The balance of being able to see everything I have accomplished versus the goals I have yet to reach make learning with Master Gohring one of the best experiences I have ever had. I have always had difficulty seeing positives in my progress, but in class I am reminded of how far I have come in just a few short months. I plan to continue with my training for the rest of my life - I am sure that even when I do become a Black Sash, there will still be much to learn! more

Your Never Bored at Master Gohring's School 10/4/2007

I began my adventure with Tai Chi back in Sept of 2005. I first started under my Dr's recommendation. In my case (not scientifically evaluated), I felt the benefits of practicing the form almost immediately. In additon to the anticipated effects, I have lost 40 pounds since starting Tai Chi, mostly due to not feeling the need for a late evening "booster" food bindge. Having been asked to share my story, I have chosen to share one of the many aspects of Master Gohring's school that I enjoy the most. Master Gohring has his classes set up so that you are involved in multiple activities in each class. Yes, you start learning the positions and moves, but you rapidly start learning applications to the moves--"self-defense", and we also learn the use of some traditional weapon forms as well. I think the most interesting aspect of learning from Master Gohring is that he is always looking to improve and broaden his curriculum, a sign of a true Master. more

Great for all levels - Couch Potatoes to Marathoners 10/2/2007

My husband and I started practicing Tai Chi at Master Gohring's in April 2006. We wanted to do something together and Tai Chi was a compromise between my distance running and his computer games. Practicing Tai Chi has been a great experience for us both and I'm glad that we made the investment. It's a surprisingly good workout (I never thought my thighs could hurt more after 5 minutes in a Tai Chi posture than they would after a 2 hour run!!!), but also a great source for stress relief. It is so nice to come in to class after a busy work day because once I'm practicing Tai Chi the postures require my full attention and everything else melts away. I also really appreciate how supportive everyone (from Master Gohring to the brand new white sashes) at the school is - it makes such a big difference to be able to learn challenging new things in a caring environment. In the interest of full disclosure, Master Gohring did ask us to write a review, but I honestly only have nice things to say. more

FUN WITH MASTER GORHING 10/1/2007

Hi, I have been in Sifu's Kung Fu youth classes for 2 years now. I am almost half way to being a black sash. I like Sifu's classes. He makes things interesting and fun. There have been times I thought about giving up but I remembered the life skills and the five hearts which reminded me of my goal to be a black sash. Master Gorhing's school of Tai Chi and Kung Fu is the best out of the three schools I have been to. more

Life Transforming Experience 3/29/2007

I began taking classes at Master Gohring's Tai' chi and Kung Fu in Austin, TX in 2003. At that time I had to literally drag myself in the door using a walker. I had numerous serious health problems including crippling back pain and was severely depressed. I could feel an immediate difference in my state of mind each time I entered the door to the school. Although I could not hardly participate in classes at first, the support I received from the staff and my fellow students gave me the courage to keep coming to and participating in classes. After a few weeks I not only felt better mentally and emotionally but physically as well. Gradually I began to improve more and more. If I missed a class I noticed that I felt "not quiet right" until I made it back to class. After a few months I was able to trade the walker for a cane. As I continue to study at Master Gohring's Tai' Chi and Kung Fu I continue to improve. To date, I no longer use a cane, my endurance and balance have improved greatly, I have lost significant weight, reduced the number of medications that I have to take and generally feel healthier, happier and more confident. In summary, my experience at Master Gohring's Tai' Chi and Kung Fu has completely transformed my life for the absolute best! more

Professional and friendly center for family and personal development 3/13/2007

Our entire family is studying martial arts at Master Gohring’s Tai Chi and Kung Fu in Austin, TX. We have been members for over two years, and it is one of the best investments we could ever make. This is no rinky-dink outfit…Master Gohring’s school is extremely professional and would appeal to the most serious martial arts student as well as the beginner. Learning and practicing martial arts has helped all of us become more physically fit and mentally focused. However, there are some other aspects of Master Gohring’s school that have impacted us on other levels. First, when my husband and I enrolled our two children in the Little Dragons Kung Fu class, we did not know or expect that we also would be able to take Tai Chi or Kung Fu classes at a discount. Because of this generous policy, our family has a common interest that is healthy, active and affordable. We are grateful to Master Gohring for promoting families in this way. Second, I am impressed with Master Gohring’s sincerity. I believe he and his instructors have the best interests of the students at heart. Master Gohring is honest in both his praise and his correction when he teaches. He has a natural style and a true desire to help his students discover their inner teacher. I enjoy the way he provides simple analogies and examples to explain certain concepts. Classes are always constructive and satisfying. I am grateful for the wholehearted commitment from Master Gohring. It is inspiring. Finally, I admire Master Gohring’s ability to command the respect and attention of his students, from the Little Dragons (4-, 5-, and 6-year-olds) to the most advanced. Because Master Gohring creates an awareness and healthy respect for authority, I believe his students are open and able to take advantage of the wisdom of experience. Master Gohring also reminds his young students that they “must do what their parents ask them to do the first time they ask them to do it, every time.” I have quoted him many times at home, and it is clearly understood that this is also our expectation. Master Gohring’s example has made me a better parent, and I appreciate that. In closing, I feel honored to know Master Gohring and to call him “Sifu” and would vouch for his integrity and ability as a teacher without reservation. We invite everyone to visit Master Gohring’s Tai Chi and Kung Fu! It’s the most professional, yet friendly martial arts school in town. You will not only master Tai Chi and/or Kung Fu, but you will become a better person in the process! more

Made the Right Choice 3/12/2007

Studying Tai Chi at Master Gohring’s Tai Chi & Kung Fu has been the best thing I’ve done in my life for my life. Master Gohring is an outstanding Master Instructor who keeps a solid pulse on each and every student. His insight is phenomenal. Tai Chi is not something you can pick up in a couple of sessions and yet Master Gohring keeps track of where each student is then at the right time, he makes the smallest correction that makes you realize how a posture should really be. I know I made the right choice when I was looking for a Tai Chi instructor and recommend that if you are looking too, be sure to try out Master Gohring’s Tai Chi & Kung Fu. more

friendly atmosphere and great martial arts classes 1/17/2007

When I first began training here at Master Gohring's Tai Chi and Kung Fu I was impressed with how friendly the students were. I felt welcomed by beginners and long time students too. There was no clique-type feeling. The Tai Chi and Qi Gong trained me to have better balance, coordination and self-guided relaxation. I was able to refocus myself and my life. The school also has a great family program for kids. I started my daughter in the Kung Fu program when she was 11. I have seen her blossom as a young girl and in the program. She has better self-confidence, self-discipline and self-defense. She has made some good friends here in Austin at the school and she seems to make better friends at public school too. Then I decided to make a big change in my life and take a real chance on myself at the same time. I joined Master Gohring's Certified Instructor Training program about a year and a half ago. At this point I am an Assistant Instructor. I enjoy what I do (sharing martial arts to individuals and families) and love going to work everyday. I will earn my black sash in Tai Chi this December and should earn my black sash in Kung Fu next year. It is a challenging process that is worth it to me every step of the way. I encourage anyone who has been thinking about getting into martial arts to try this school. more

About Master Gohring 1/8/2007

I grew up in Austin, Texas. I began my training in Tai Chi and Kung Fu 20 years ago. After only 1 year of training and at the age of 15 my teacher recognized my talent as an instructor and I was the one my teacher had work with new students. In 1989 at age 17, I finished my Black Sash training. That same year my teacher opened up a school across the street from the original Whole Foods Market. He said, "Your teaching Kung Fu, your teaching Tai Chi and your in charge of the Kids Martial Arts Program." I said, "Yes, Sir." In 1991 I became a certified instructor. I am currently the president of the national black sash association as a 5th degree black sash teacher. I have dedicated my life to helping students and families grow strong together. more

I love my Tai chi and kung fu Classes with Master Gohring 9/16/2006

Just noticed you have a listing on Local.com. I didn't see a place to review you as Master Gohring's Tai Chi & Kung for Austin Texas so I am putting my review here. I am not much of a writer but I will try to explain how your school has changed my life I hope permanently. I first came to you in April 2005 I was stressed out and out of shape tired of the same old everyday grind what I needed was a change of pace what I found was a new way to live my life. I have not been with the school very long but I think I may have a serious addiction to T'ai chi, to which I hope there is no cure. I have notice that even my driving has changed, I don't feel the need to run the person who cut in front of me off the road. Taking a moment to just focus on my breathing has saved my mothers neck a few times this week alone.(she sends her love) Seriously though I really do believe that from here the training that I will and have received will only improve me mentally and physically. I have already stopped using my inhaler so often and I am also no longer having panic attacks. I look forward to your workshops and special events and would recommend that everyone take advantage of as many as they can. I am very glad I found your school and plan to be around along time. more
