Houston's Best Kept Secret on the West Side 5/21/2010

After being a Visible Changes customer for years I recently switched to The Upper Hand - Royal Oaks. I absolutely love the salon. Courtney is fantastic! Cut and color are fab. This salon is very relaxed and well run. I've now made two trips for cut and color and each time Courtney made me feel right at home. I hate giving away the best kept secret on the west side of Houston! Pros: Friendly staff, clean, excellent cut and color! more

I started going to the upper hand after my mom came home from Jillian the first time and her haircut/style made her look 15 yrs younger, it was amazing. I thought, wow this girl must be good! So I went and I have always been satisfied. I used to get very nervous at the hairdressers, as they were cutting my hair I'd be trying to look down at the ground to see how long of pieces they were cutting off, because I have had many bad experiences, BUT since I've been going to Jillian, I don't even worry anymore, to the point that I would even say, just do whatever you think will look good! She has really good styling/cutting techniques and a good sense of what will look good. I love the upper hand at royal oaks and if you're looking for a consistent place to go to, you won't be disappointed! Pros: excellent service, fun atmosphere, cookies! Cons: none! more

I've been going to see Lisa for years for my eyebrows. As soon as I found out she changed locations to The Upper Hand, I started going there. It's a great environment and such friendly people working there. Pros: Clean facility, friendly staff and great location more

Houston's Best Hair Salon 5/9/2010

Jillian and Courtney are superb! I had hair extensions for the first time by Jillian and they lasted up to 5 months! Awesome hair cuts and color and 2 minutes from my house in Royal Oaks! Pros: Service & Quality of Products Cons: None that I have found yet! more

Fabulous Haircut 5/6/2010

After having neglected my hair for at least a couple of months, I finally made the decision to get a major haircut. Bryan listened to every word I said, looked at the picture I had brought with me and finally acted as the hair guru that he is. I wound up with a cut that made me feel five pounds lighter and five years younger. Kind of like painless plastic surgery with the very good humor of Bryan thrown in! Love him, love my hair! Having spent YEARS trying to find a professional that listens and understands my needs, I was delighted to have found Shiva at The Upper Hand. A next day appt. was available, all staff were courteous, there was NO wait time, and most importantly, my color and cut correction were handled expertly. Though I live in central Louisiana, The Upper Hand is now ""My"" salon, and well worth the drive! Pros: Stylist LISTENS! Cons: An 8 hour round trip! more

Best hairdresser 5/2/2010

Nancy has been my hairdresser for well over a year now, and she is terrific at cutting my curly hair. Her haircuts are very easy for me to style which means a lot when I am rushing to get ready for work. In addition, she is the best at giving manicures and pedicures. My nails are soft and yet she can get the polish to stay and stay. Everyone at the salon is very friendly and I enjoy my monthly visits. Pros: Terrific haircuts, manicures & pedicures more

All they care about is money, not about customer service 4/24/2010

I have been a loyal customer for over 3 yrs, and today was turned away for being 9 minutes late... I understand that everbody needs to make money, but when you manage your appointments so tight that you can't stand to start an appointment 10 minutes late, there is a problem. The best salons and stylists know how to balance a schedule so that they are able to make a profit but still provide the best in customer service. I thought this was one of those places, but I was wrong. It's pretty sad too, because the skill of my particular stylist is very good. Not good enough for me to ignore such cruddy customer service, though. Pros: consistent haircut/color, but that's not all that matters Cons: overbooked schedules, rude employees, no loyalty more

I really enjoy going to the UPPER HAND! my stylist is JILLIAN and she always has fresh ideas for me so i never get bored. I have referred all of my co- workers and friends to her. From the Receptionist Desk to the Owner to the Stylist this place is NOT Friendly or Professional. They try to say they do celebrity NEWS hair style and that should be enough of a sell for you I guess. Let's not mention their RUDENESS and inability to cut hair! I've been to Minneapolis, NY & Chicago with fabulous hair stylists that are able to look at your hair and say: this will look great on you!! Sadly I did not find this here. My hair was cut funny...left with a ""tag"" in the back, whatever that is, and when I went back to see if they could fix it, they were defensive and short. Okay, clearly this is not where you want to go to get a new, great, sexy hairstyle. One star given for the friendly staff. Now we need to work on the confidence of the employees and decrease the defensiveness when someone comes back with an issue. Pros: Nice, Friendly staff Cons: No confidence. more

SHIVA IS THE BEST 3/4/2010

Shiva always gives the best haircuts and color! When I was in Paris the salon I went to for an updo commented on how great my color was. They say usually American hair stylists do a bad job on color.
