Thank goodness for The Stranger 4/5/2006

With so much of our lives being consumed by the deep, dark issues of our world at war, it is always a pleasure to pick up a copy of the Stranger, found on pretty much every commercial street in Seattle. The columns are not meant to berate readers with the same modern-day politics, but rather to entertain, parody, and inform in a loose manner. You can tell the editors and writers of this paper have fun with their work. This paper works as an excellent guide to life in Seattle, especially night-life. The "I Saw U" classifieds are always so fun to read! Put down that New York Times for once and pick up a Stranger with your coffee. Your mood just might improve. more

Seattle: Things to Do. 3/9/2006

This is yet another excellent reference for things to do in Seattle on a nightly basis. The Stranger is a free newspaper that you can find in cafés or in newspaper stands on the street. It is an excellent reference for pretty much everything there is to do in Seattle each week. A new one is printed every Thursday. I use this every time I want to go out for an evening or to see what festivals are coming up. At times I don't agree with some of the movie reviews but its still a good reference for entertainment. more

Fun read and free 11/2/2005

The Stranger definitely panders to it's readership, but that's why I love reading the columns. I may not believe everything they are saying, but they always lay it on the line and typically have compelling evidence to back up their claims. Also, who doesn't enjoy Drunk of the Week and Dan Savage? Not everything has to be serious to be considered mature, and as far as Dan Savage goes, he really says what a lot of us are thinking, its just that he is willing to put it in print. I have seen instances where I disagree with what he is saying, but I don't think he has ever claimed to have all the answers. I will admit, I probably depend on the stranger for show listings more than anything else, but I always find I have read it cover to cover by the time the next one has come out. more

Hey! At least it's free, right 9/9/2005

All jokes aside, The Stranger is basically a free weekly newspaper distributed widely throughout the city every Thursday. It is the anthesis of Seattle Weekly, or perhaps the Seattle Weekly is the anthesis of The Stranger. At any rate, while the Seattle Weekly markets itself towards an older, more affluent, more....stable population, The Stranger is *THE* read for anyone who is disaffected, still in high school, or who gets atwitter seeing four-letter-words printed in a newspaper. They do have an extensive arts, entertainment, and food directory, but other than that, don't expect hard-hitting journalism from this "Friend of the Street Kid" paper. The stories that are written rarely have to do with anything that is beyond the borders of Broadway and Capitol Hill, and they seem to spend an inordinate amount of column space insulting the readers and employees of Seattle Weekly, and insulting the residents of Seattle in general. If sophmoric writing is your style, then go for The Stranger. In my opinion, the only reason to pick up this rag is for the arts, entertainment, and food listing. Oh, and it makes great packing material and flooring for your animal cages. more
