Our food came out on time and was prepared just right. I would recommend this place to a hungry person the portions are huge! Service as ok but the food made up for it! I?d go her...

I think the sandwiches are too small and do not hold enough meat to feed a grown man. A 7 year old might like the portions but not me. I can buy a small sandwich like that one i...

Home of the original French dip sandwich. Get the French dip sandwich double dip or single dip depending how juicy you want it more

One of the claimed originators of the French Dip, this place is delicious and a nice detour from more typical dining, with it's retro feel. more

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE???? I've been to Phillpe's for over 50 years! Not that often, but enough to see a big difference over time. Went there last night and could not believe how little you get in the beef sandwich. There was a time when it would fill you up, but now it barely covers the roll and for $6.75, it's the biggest gyp in L.A. At least if they gave you something for your money, but they don't. Another thing; I always thought the dip was beef dripping. Now I come to find out (from the cashier) that the drippings are from beef, PORK, and lamb. Personally, I don't want anything from a pig. more

The sandwiches here are well worth stopping for. An interesting little place with lots of character. Had the beef dip and was surprised it wasn't a massive size, like you quite often get at fast-food joints. more

The best! Simple. Avoid the place on gamedays and weekends. more

I found this joint on the food network a few years back and have been back here ever since then. This place is popular for their french dips, so if you don't like french dips, then you probably will just be ok with this place. Sometimes the line is long (5 or 6 people), and sometimes there is nobody in line, so it all depends. French dips (beef, pork, lamb) are very good. Ask them to do the double dip (double dip= buns are dipped in the juice twice). Even if you do not like the soggy bread, you should try this. Must get the pickled beets and pickled eggs! They are so... good. Eggs are pickled in pickled beets juice. more

Saw Philippes on food network and had high expectations. Not impressed at all! The bread was flavorless, beef dip greasy with no taste at all. Then to add to the atmosphere, there was a guy sleeping in his bowl of soup. I can pass on that type of nostalgia. Try Johnny Pastramis more

Philippe's = Good Grub! 12/22/2009

First bite ""Amazing."" Second bite ""Pure Joy."" Third bite ""Will You Marry me?"" To eat Phillippe's is to love Phillippe's. The recipe is simple... Get some amazingly tender roast beef. Check. Slam it down onto a crispy french roll. Check. Dunk that french roll into some ""Dip"" - the greatest thing known to man. Check Mate.... And let the children sing. Slight exaggeration? Maybe..... but not much. When you've tried it, you'll understand. Come into Philippe's any time of day and you'll always be greeted with the same... 10 lines 10 people deep, rows upon rows of family style tables, saw dust on the floor, and most importantly, sweet old ladies in light brown dresses dipping their hearts away. But equally important, load up your tray with some old fashioned macaroni salad, one giant pickle, a slice of apple pie, and an old school tiny glass of lemonade, and you're on your way. Exploring for a table is almost half the fun, walking through the labyrinth of hallways and rooms, strolling up stairs where you swear the layout must have been from a 1912 elementary school. Wherever you choose to sit, settle down with the worlds greatest french dip and squeeze on just a little of there super-spicy horseradish mustard (you've been warned, don't come after us when your brain wants to exit your body through your nose). It's no wonder the place has been packed for right around a century, put simple, the place has Good Grub. See more at www.thegoodgrub.weebly. com Pros: Grubalicious Cons: Nada more

Amazing French Dips 11/3/2009

If you're looking for an amazing, cheap French Dip, Philippe's is the place. The originator of the French Dip (yes, you heard me right), Philippe's is perfect right before a Dodger game! But get there early, as the lines can get REALLY long before Dodger Games! For dessert, get the Banana Cream Pie. It's AWESOME! Pros: Great Food, cheap prices Cons: Long lines before a Dodger game more

Good place for French-Dip Sandwiches 11/1/2009

I believe this is the only place that serves french-dip sandwiches. Good lamb sandwich but it does not taste lamby. Cole slaw is good, too.\r \r The cons: the service is inconsistent--sometimes good and sometimes bad. And the brownies--yech! Totally skip it! Pros: Good lamb sandwich and parking Cons: Service and brownies more
