Fun place, but out of my budget. 6/13/2007

I honestly wouldn't have gone if I didn't have a gift card. I received a gift card in a large amount and just decided to use it, so I made reservations. When we showed up for our meal, the hostess was uncommonly rude and obnoxious. I mean, really, everyone knows it's one of the more high-pressure positions in a restaurant, but it's also a position one has to handle with composure. It's a real turn-off for customers to be greeted by a snarky, unfriendly woman who is unaccommodating. Anyway. We got to our table and the rest of the evening was fine. Food was delicious (way out of my budget, but with my gift card, we felt at ease when we were ordering). The waiter's friendly demeanor made up for the hostess's obnoxiousness. I particularly liked the vegetable dumplings and the red curry coconut chicken. Our dessert was GREAT... a nice, gimmicky but delectable Giant Fortune Cookie, filled with mousse and surrounded with a mixture of fruit. The drinks were great also, but a little overly priced. I still recommend the Peach Blossom Cosmo, though, that had a sweet, fragrant taste. Pros: Friendly waiter, good food, great dessert Cons: ordiarily out of my budget, rude hostess more

Worst Waiter I Ever Had! 5/30/2007

Just had dinner at Tao's a couple of nights ago. Hummm, first of all everyone....don't waste your time or money at this place. Go to Koi on 40th, where the service in friendly and the food is wonderful. We had 9:30 reservations just a couple of nighs ago and we were finally seated at 10ish. The (rude) waiter rushed us to order and acted as if we did something terrible to him. He was rude while we ordered and you can tell that he didn't feel like answering any of our questions about the menu. We ordered drinks and (surprise) never came. Finally, we flagged down the busboy (since we never saw the waiter) and finally got water. Our dishes were spicy and all 4 of us had empty glasses from the bar. The waiter never came back to seeing how we were doing. The next time we saw him was when he came with the ck. A lousy tip for lousy service. I walked up to the busboy and handed him most of the tip since he was friendly and made sure that we always had water. The food was nothing to remember ;o( Pros: The Mojitos are good Cons: Food & Service more

Remember when Tao was hot? 5/16/2007

Wow, how things have changed! Went last night, spent about 30 mins at the bar and then had a table. The first thing I noticed was the crowd (I haven't been in 6 months, used to come often), a mix of the ugly, the b&t crowd and a HEAVY emphasis on the abundance of tourists. The place was packed, but I couldn't find a decently dressed or hot person there. Tao used to be great, a hip, sexxy restaurant, but it has turned into a mega tourist trap and a place for people (that normally don't go out, or go out to nice places) to tell all their friends the next day that they ""went to Tao last night!"". Also, the food has really gone down hill and their menu has yet to change. I could get better dumplings at Land or Spice (and pay a 1/3 the price). Overall, Tao has turned into a joke, I will never be back and never drop another benjamin there. Drinks are still great, so are the donuts, all in all, unless you're from out of town, stay away. Pros: the donuts Cons: tourists galore, food, service, crowd more

Was Hip, Now Lame. 5/13/2007

When Tao First opened about 7 years ago it was an incredible experience. Pros: The food is good, beautiful decor. Cons: overpriced, bad service, music too loud, lights too low. more
