Go to Asia de Cuba, SAPA, Kittichai or even Bao 111... there are so many other far superior fusion places in the same genre! Our group of 7 waited over an hour to be seated for our reservations only to receive the worst service I have ever experienced! Our waiter was awful and just didn't care to do his job- he took our appetizer orders after 15 minutes- then disappeared! Our appetizers came before he took our entree orders- we also wanted to order drinks but he said he would come back for our drink orders. Guess what! He didn't! We had to keep on flagging busboys (who were all so attentive and amazing) to get our waiter- finally, our waiter came back took drink orders from two people and then left again. We again had to ask several busboys to get our waiter back. It was like this the whole night. It was our friend's birthday so we asked for a cake and a candle. He brought out this huge dessert sampler albeit it was really pretty! We were finally starting to feel better about Tao- until we got our bill- they charged $55 for the dessert! It's not the $$ but they should have asked us if we wanted it- we only asked for a candle on a cake! This is a typical request- they usually bring out one dessert ($8-$16) with a candle. Tao should have asked us if we wanted the whole dessert sampler @$55!! It's wrong to bring out the most expensive dessert item- which is pretty much every single dessert they offer. To top it off- 20% gratuity was included, of course! Skip Tao- so many, much, much better fine dining in NYC- where you get good food, trendy scene and top quality service!!!
Pros: trendy atmosphere, beautiful restaurant, attentive busboys
Cons: wait time in spite of reservations, disgraceful waiter service, questionable birthday cake policy
