On my recent trip to Manhattan, wanted to indulge in some fine cuisine so on Saturday we made reservations at Tao. Like everyone else has pretty much said, the wait is extended, n...

Overdone concept - between the Buddha and the DJ playing the most BORING and UNINSPIRED techno I think I've ever heard. But have to say it matched the food and the service! Noth...

what's the point of making a reservation? 10/2/2007

We made a reservation here for 8pm and showed up at 8pm, but waited for half an hour and left. more

The worst sping roll I've ever had. 10/1/2007

Just don't order the peking duck spring roll. It tastes terrible. Other dishes are only ok overall. Pros: Great place to get a drink and hang out Cons: Long wait for a table more

PF Changs meets Studio 54 9/29/2007

Crowded bar, crowded restaurant. Seems like a cool place to be...saw 3 celebrities. Very loud, could not hear the people at our table...conversation was challenging. Food was slightly better than PF Changs... Pros: Celebrity gazing and bar area Cons: Too crowded (even the people at our table were scrunched in), too loud more

not too good 9/18/2007

crowded with people hanging over you while you eat, people bumping into you Pros: if you like to see alot of people Cons: attitude with the bar tenders and very loud and noisy with people standing over your head more

Average food and experience 9/2/2007

My husband and I, both New Yorkers, went to Tao mainly because of the hype. Tao was the place to be about 5-6 years ago, but being students at the time, we never went. Now, after experiencing Tao in its post-glory, we will not return. Pros: dramatic Buddha statue Cons: everything is just average more

Over-priced, Over-rated and Over-hyped 8/30/2007

Went to Tao a few weeks ago with some co-workers. Although the decor is fantastic, the food was less than enjoyable, and for the price, sadly disappointing. I highly suggest going for a drink or 2 - the lounge in the front is quite cosy. And make sure to steal a glimpse into the dining room to see the buddha. Food is much better at Lemongrass, and half the price. Pros: Decor Cons: Price, Food Quality, Portions more

Beautiful people...delicious food 8/28/2007

The waitstaff was very easy on the eyes. Great place to people watch as everyone looked like they belong on a movie set. The leather lounge was well orchestrated with modern asian furniture. The wasabi peas were much better than the standard peanuts. The dining area was very attractive too. We sat next to the 16-foot Buddha with glass table. Rose petals and lit candles were underneath the table. The food was abundantly satisfying from appetizer to entree to dessert. Asian Fusion is definitely a person's interpretation and my stomach tended to agree with how it was prepared. However, I was more than pleasantly distracted by the multiple beautiful women who would invariably walk by our table. Definitely a place to appreciate the ambience/ view. Pros: Beautiful people watching Cons: The price point may be a bit high for some. more

Good Food 8/10/2007

Went there for my wedding anniversary. Did not make reservations, but they managed to squeeze us in. Liked the food & the service was attentive. Pros: Nice Interiors Cons: Tends to be quiet noisey more

Over Priced 8/3/2007

What's all the Rave? Avg food but charge 50%-60% more than any other asain restaurant. It must be the decor they are charging. Don't go there unless you have RSVP, else you can't get in. Worth trying out. Pros: Great Ambience & Service Cons: Too Pricey more

Great place to go before you party!! 7/18/2007

I was there for a birthday party. Everything was so wonderful. This is a place you want to go before you out for a night on the town, not when you have had a long night at work and you want a relaxing dinner. Was perfect for the birthday celebration. Food was delicous, great sushi!!!! Desert platter was also amazing and I love there special cocktails. Wish I could remember the name of the one I liked, Dragon something...haha more

Avoid Tao at all costs! 7/2/2007

Go to Asia de Cuba, SAPA, Kittichai or even Bao 111... there are so many other far superior fusion places in the same genre! Our group of 7 waited over an hour to be seated for our reservations only to receive the worst service I have ever experienced! Our waiter was awful and just didn't care to do his job- he took our appetizer orders after 15 minutes- then disappeared! Our appetizers came before he took our entree orders- we also wanted to order drinks but he said he would come back for our drink orders. Guess what! He didn't! We had to keep on flagging busboys (who were all so attentive and amazing) to get our waiter- finally, our waiter came back took drink orders from two people and then left again. We again had to ask several busboys to get our waiter back. It was like this the whole night. It was our friend's birthday so we asked for a cake and a candle. He brought out this huge dessert sampler albeit it was really pretty! We were finally starting to feel better about Tao- until we got our bill- they charged $55 for the dessert! It's not the $$ but they should have asked us if we wanted it- we only asked for a candle on a cake! This is a typical request- they usually bring out one dessert ($8-$16) with a candle. Tao should have asked us if we wanted the whole dessert sampler @$55!! It's wrong to bring out the most expensive dessert item- which is pretty much every single dessert they offer. To top it off- 20% gratuity was included, of course! Skip Tao- so many, much, much better fine dining in NYC- where you get good food, trendy scene and top quality service!!! Pros: trendy atmosphere, beautiful restaurant, attentive busboys Cons: wait time in spite of reservations, disgraceful waiter service, questionable birthday cake policy more

Excellent Food, Service and Atmosphere 6/25/2007

We dined at Tao on Thursday night and all expectations were met. We were promptly seated for our 9pm reservation on the 2nd floor at the railing with a beautiful view of the restaurant and the surrounding scene. Our waiter was superb with suggestions and the food was outstanding. The sea bass, wonton lobster and Kobe Shabu were all prepared above our expectations. The dessert of bread pudding was very good and the fortune cookie was just ok. We will be back again for a special evening. more
