Cozy Wine Bar--Great for groups 4/6/2011

This place is fantastic! Excellent for large parties, accommodating wait staff, quality food, and wide selection of wine. I hosted a party (13 guests) this past Saturday night. The hostess was incredibly accommodating and unlike many NYC venues, they do not charge to hold your reservation or for last minute changes to it. All of my guests enjoyed the wine and the food very much. And the Toblerone fondue is amazing! more

good food, great waiter, manager not so happy with 3/15/2010

Had a party. Food was great. Treated us wonderfully. Had too many people at our little party (by one) who wedge himself in the corner of the table. The room was empty so we asked if we could use more tables - waiter was great and helped us spread out a bit and make room for our extra guest... then, we were told we had to give the table back...WTF? The waiter kept apologizing, said the manager was making him do it and how sorry he was. He was very sweet... So we took our linens and forks and knives and smushed back together.... then the people came and left (maybe we laughed too loud) and the two tables sat there empty the rest of the night.... no apology from the manager. Nothing. And the bathroom was ok, not gross, wet around the toilet seat but there is only one for the whole restaurant - yes girls, share with the boys...yikes. Go for the Fondue! Don't bring a crowd! Enjoy the beer! I will probably go back with a friend one day (my husband won't go back again) Pros: Fondue, beer, service Cons: Manager, bathroom more

Tasty, Friently, and Fun 10/24/2009

Went on a date here with my gf. The staff was SUPER nice and friendly. Our waiter was fun and offered great recommendations. The wine was priced low but was amazing. Had the crab cakes app, not the best but were still good...then had the fondu dinner and it was very good. Didnt have room for desert. The space has nice decor but is a little cold and bland. \r \r Pros: Friendly staff, cheap good wine more

Excellent Eats! 10/19/2009

The mussels are among the best I've ever had (including in Ireland!). The broth just begs for a ton of their fresh bread to sop it up. The cheese plate boasts a great selection and combine and complement well. Service was great, epecially since the place was nearly empty. The atmosphere is warm and inviting- we will visit again during our next trip to the city. Pros: Great service, nice atmosphere Cons: Limited wine selection for the truly dedicated oenophile more

Great place to eat! 10/11/2009

Food is delicious with an amazing menu! There's something for everyone! Ordered mussels and cheese fondue for appetizer, and for entree, we had the meat fondue.... all absolutely delicious. No complaints! Great ambience! Great place to go with friends, on a date, or even with a group! Pros: best mussels in town more

To avoid if you are looking for a Real Meat Fondue 10/6/2009

I have to say that paying $35 for boiled meat is crazy...Partly our fault for being used to a real Meat Fondue (meat cooked in oil) and not paying attention to the menu where it says ""served with Beef Broth"". We decided to give it a try but were so disappointed that we asked the waiter if anything could be done he could not take any initiative and had to ask the maitre d' . She was not very helpful herself, saying it was indicated in the menu that the meat fondue were served with beef broth . She said she could not do anything. Not very accommodating. We asked her if our meat could be cooked maybe like a stri-fry or with butter in a pan, She reluctantly said yes and came back with a disgusting plate of flavorless cooked meat (as bad as the boiled meat). You have to know the real Meat fondue cooked in hot oil gives the meat a crispiness and delicious flavor that can NOT compare to beef cooked in boiled broth(which doesn't get hot enough). I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Pros: Good Cheese Fondues Cons: Meat Fondues=Boiled Meat more

""Brilliant Choice"" for a great evening. 1/26/2009

I was looking for an interesting choice for a restaurant to celebrate my birthday. I found Swizz through an online search, and obsessively checked as many reviews as possible. (one of the guests in our party is notoriously ""difficult"" in his food opinions.) \r I must say that the entire evening was excellent. From the professionalism to the response of my online reservation, I sensed this would be a great evening, and I was not disappointed. Upon arrival, the host was incredibly warm and charming (and good looking too!) And helped us choose a nice Riesling as we waited for our guests to arrive. We decided to have fondue for each course (Cheese, Chinoise, and Chocolate). The cheese fondue (Napoleon) was gorgeous! It had a perfect consistency and had depth of flavor that was not overpowering. Clearly, excellent quality of ingredients went into the dish. (As a side note, my partner who really hates cheese gave the Napoleon a try and loved it!) and we decided to try the Raclette, which was very good, and a unique taste of the traditional Swiss dish. For Desert, we had the Toblerone and the Jacques Torres. Both of which were both euphoric.\r The ambiance of the space is perfectly comfortable, and the staff is incredibly accommodating. A lovely menu without being too fussy. Perfect for conversation and enjoying each other?s company.\r This was a great experience. Highly recommended. I'll absolutely return.\r Pros: Excellent food, service, and comfortable ambiance Cons: none, really. more

Mediocre Food, Way Too Pricey 1/26/2009

The food was very very bland. Our fondue had had almost no flavor, and the sauces were decent but didn't overcome the blandness. It wasn't that the food was bad... it just wasn't really anything. It definitely was not worth the $100 tab for two people. If you're looking to spend this kind of money, I would strongly recommend going elsewhere. \r \r Also, the place smelled like stale cheese. Pros: The food has no flavor, so it can't taste bad. Cons: It is extremely overpriced. Expect to pay triple digits for bland food. more

Maybe Next Time... 10/25/2008

I'm not really a fan. Bad ser vice for one. We ordered a few courses and from appetizers to entrees we had to wait forever. They had cleared one an it was literally 20 minutes before anything else came out. That normal? I know we're supposed to savor the wine but I wasn't e ven that into the wine. I don't know what our server was doing but she seemed more interested in talking to the other servers than in helping us. And they weren't e ven busy so it's completely inexcusable. Pros: wine Cons: service more

Odd place...wouldn't recommend 7/26/2008

We went here for a friend's bday to have fondue. The appetizers came and the food was OK. We'd ordered a bottle of wine and I drank about a half glass and my friend about a fourth when we both ended up with fruit flies in our glasses. We alerted who I think was the host - some small, weird Swiss guy. Anyway he basically said he would either give us each a different glass of wine each (remember we still had most of our bottle left), simply remove the flies from the glass and bring them back to us (the most suprising and disgusting option presented) or we would have to pay for a whole new bottle. It was so weird. I've never had an experience like this in a restaurant. Normally they would just replace the bottle no questions asked. We certainly didn't put the flies in our glasses. This little Swiss midget basically told us the flies would just come back so we have to pay fhalf for the open bottle plus the new one. It was really a weird and uncomfortable situation. To the waiter's credit he ended up bringing us glasses of wine and discounted the bottle 15% not what most places would do but better than having a fly removed from your glass and brought back to you. \r \r The food was OK but someone in our group said the fondue smelled like a$$. Later on our stomaches were doing a dance. We probably should have gone to Artisinal but the reviews on here weren't so great so we thought Swizz would be good. Honestly, I would skip this place the food was just OK and this place is just too weird and gross to even bother with. Honestly, with options like we were presented with about the flies who knows what else goes on this place. Yuck. If you want low-key fondue and drinks try Honey on 14th Street. Pros: We have a odd and somewhat funny story to tell and our waiter was nice Cons: Everything else more

OK date place 5/27/2008

I was there on a date and it was an OK setting. It was dark and romantic inside with the red lined walls but it felt overdone. The front area of the bar was cramped but there were plenty of seats in the back. more

Highly recommended! 5/5/2008

My husband and I had the pleasure of dining at Swizz last Saturday night ...We were celebrating my husband?s Birthday. We started with the chicken-duck and black truffle pate with apple celery salad. Followed by the traditional cheese fondue with apples and air-dried beef. The bottle of white wine from Switzerland, recommended by our waiter, worked perfectly with our amazing fondue. We finished our meal with a wonderful chocolate Toblerone fondue, with Canadian Ice Wine. Our waiter Iqabal was fantastic ? he was well informed, made excellent recommendations and was very attentive. Overall an excellent meal and we?ll be back again soon!! more

Fantastic Fondue and Fabulous Service!! 4/19/2008

First of all, I was impressed before we even arrived at Swizz as they let us make a reservation for after the theatre, during the week, at 11:15pm. Granted, it wasn't busy when we arrived and I was sure we'd feel rushed but I was wrong. The server was very friendly and accommodating and made sure that we had everything we needed. The food was amazing -- a salad and the fondue was enough to satisfy our appetites which was disappointing in a way because we would have loved to try the dessert fondue. I'm sure that we will return the next time we're fortunate enough to get back to the city. Pros: Great food and friendly service more

Excellent Fondue and Wine, Arrive earlier than your reservation frazzled maitre'd 2/25/2008

I took a couple out of town guests for dinner at Swizz last Saturday night and YUMMY!!! We really enjoyed everything we ate and drank. \r \r The Steamed P.E.I Mussels were phenomenal as was the Caser Salad we enjoyed before our fondue pots arrived at our table. We ordered the Traditional (for 3) and the waiter was kind enough to suggest we also order the Herb (for 1) just to try it. We got dried beef, broccoli, potatoes, apples, and sausage to go with them and everything was great - the dried beef was just as I remembered it being in France, the sausage was cooked perfectly, the herb fondue with broccoli or the potatoes was a nice variation and I'll def. try it again and the apples never browned (they have at other fondue places that didn't use lemon juice or another preservative). \r \r We ordered a bottle of wine from the wine list and enjoyed it very much, although we hadn't noticed that the back of our food menu contained three pages of wine separated by region, color and price. We ordered our second bottle off of this menu and it was better than the first for $15 less - tricky tricky. \r \r Our only complaint was the Matire d'. Bless him because he certainly was working hard and putting out fires left and right, figuratively and literally (someone caught their napkin on fire and he calmy carried it outside to put it out). However, when we arrived 5 min. before our reservation (made 4 days in advance) he wasn't so calm. The restaurant seemed to have overbooked and he had to ask an already seated couple to move in order to accommodate us. We were seated near the door and although the table was lovely - we were facing the frazzled maire'd all night and the stress felt somewhat contagious. I recommend requesting a table downstairs when you reserve. If we go back, which we probably will, the downstairs was a much nicer environment. \r \r Also, the bathroom upstairs could really use some work - think I-95, middle of nowhere, gas station bathroom... yuck. Pros: Traditional Fondue, Wine Selection, Menu Variety, Romantic, Cons: Disgusting Bathroom, Overbooking, Somewhat Frazzled Staff, Long Wait for Food more

Best fondue in the city 2/4/2008

I am a bit of a fondue-hunter in the city, especially when it comes to dessert fondues. Who could imagine how great Toblerone fondue could be??\r \r The staff at Swizz are exceptional attentive, and very kind. While the fondue platters are meant to serve only 2 people, they were quick to accommodate our party of three and adjust the amount (and price) of the platter accordingly. Based on the service, I was actually surprised that this place wasn't completely packed and bursting at the seams. I guess its our little secret! ;) Pros: Staff, Ambience, Food, Service more

Major attitude from staff!!! 5/14/2007

Terrible experience! Eighteen of us went there for a dinner party. Everything was fine until the end when the bill came. Since we had a large party, they included the gratuity on the check, which was expected. However, we realized they added the tip on the total after tax, not the subtotal, which essentially meant we had to pay about $175 more. The manager was rude and obnoxious when we brought this to his attention and claimed that there was nothing he could do about it. None of us had ever experienced that before.\r I would never ever go back there, especially with a large party. The food wasn't so delicious to warrant such an attitude. In addition, it's kind of gross that the only bathroom is in the kitchen. Pros: chocolate fondue for dessert Cons: the manager's attitude more

Nice Atmosphere, Good Food 2/21/2007

We had a nice dinner on a wednessday night. It was not very crowded but we still made a reservation. We had a pleasent experience except the line for the one bathroom was quite long. All we wanted to do was wash are hands, but there is only one restroom for both men and women. The host was very friendly, and accomadating. The food was very good, quite heavy but it's what you'd expect when eating so much cheese and chocolate. We had the swiss cheese onion toast to start and we really liked it...tastes like french onion soup without the broth. We also had the weiner scnitzel which was fantastic with a sqeeze of lemon on it since it did not come with the usual brown sauce. The toblerone chocolate fondue was delicious! Our waiter was cordial but not extremely nice. He seemed a bit irritated all night which I feel he should have tried better to cover up. Even if he was in a bad mood he should not have made that known to us. Our interaction with him was a bit awkward. Not sure if that's a reason to avoid the place though, because it was a really nice meal, and fun for something different. \r PS It smells like cheese fondue the minute you walk in, you might smell of the place well after you leave. Pros: really good food Cons: one bathroom more

WOW. Great service & great fondue! 2/15/2007

This is a top 10 place in every single way. It's probably the best customer service my gf and I have ever had (we went for a Valentine's Day dinner), the fondue was incredible, the prices were fair, the decor was really nice. They go the extra touch...hiring knowledgable and friendly Swiss staff and waiters. \r A Totally Hidden Secret, as it's just off 8th avenue and most people miss it. \r This is a place worth giving your business to - the best fondue + the best customer service alone. Go here and impress someone special. Pros: Fondue, fondue, fondue ~ yum! more
