We first discovered this place a few months ago, and have since been back about a dozen times. We're nothing short of dazzled by the food -- pastries or sandwiches all handmade at S&S! -- and coffee. Our Saturday morning ritual involves a long walk with our dog and a stop at Sweet and Savory for a snack and an espresso. The tables and chairs and benches outside are perfect for lounging. I agree with the other reviewers - the place is decent, but the service is horrible. In all fairness, it has some tasty items, but how can you enjoy when it is so ICY in that tiny little shop? It wouldn't be so noticeable if the place is big, but it is seriously a tiny little place. I don't need anyone to bend over backwards to serve me - not at all. But a simple smile or ""hello"" would suffice. Despite the (lack of) service, I have returned several times, because I don't take the owner's nasty attitude personally. But it sure does keep me and my husband from going back as often as we would had she been a bit friendlier. I guess I wonder...if you don't like people, why did she go into the service industry. more

I was really looking forward to a cozy Saturday morning breakfast based on the editorial reviews of Sweet & Savory. I'm sad to say that the customer service was the worst I have ever experienced at any restaurant or coffee house... anywhere... ever. The woman behind the counter (owner?) was busy preparing baked goods and did not look up or acknowledge our presence when we entered. She seemed angry that we had interrupted her work. When her younger counterpart behind the till stared at us until we assumed it was time to order, we ordered the morning special, a farmer's breakfast - baguette, jam, egg, coffee, and juice - presented on the chalkboard at the entrance. We were then redirected to the full case of baked goods with a scowl, as the owner noted that there were many fine baked goods worth having for breakfast instead of the labor intensive farmers breakfast (special!) that our party of 4 was interested in ordering. We waited for coffee that never came (don't bother ordering decaf, there isn't any). When we asked for a napkin, the owner looked at us like we were insane and without a word pointed to the stack on the buffet behind the cash register, blocked by patrons waiting in the entrance doorway. The whole experience was truly the worst I've ever had at a place of business. The only explanation is that the proprietor forgot her medication or has yet to be properly diagnosed with a social behavioral disorder - or is actually a wicked witch attempting to change careers. I like good coffee and often find myself cringing that I still go to the chains for a fix. This place was mentioned to me by a friend. Coffee is pricier than average--but I can deal with that at a mom and pop shop. Pastry prices however are a little more than ridiculous. At $4 for a muffin about half the size of the large ones available at Tully's or Starbucks, I could have made a sweet and savory competitor with a box of Jiff and some frozen berries. Good service is a must for me and service here was terrible. In the few moments it took to look annoyed that my girlfriend was entrenched in the paper and didn't rush up to grab her coffee, the coffee could have just as quickly been placed in front of her (it's not a large shop). I didn't feel welcome there at all and as a new resident to the area, I can't say I'll be back. There are more reasonably priced and hip places in Mt. Baker to get an espresso. The place is so tiny - you would think it would be warm & charming! But no...the icy service made me feel totally unwelcomed. Won't go back. Additionally, it was really overpriced. Coffee and pastry shop, small and friendly. Very talented baker putting out some of the best pastries in Seattle. The pain au chocolate is special. more
