Very disappointed 12/20/2008

I was very disappointed with the food at Sullivans. The appetizers we had were excellent - crab and artichoke dip with toast points and cold shrimp with cocktail sauce. However, the steak I had was the same quality I'd expect at Golden Corral - and on the rare occasion I have to eat at Golden Corral, I don't eat their steaks. My steak was full of fat and way too salty. Our side dishes were mushroom caps, mashed potatoes, and green beans. I am a person who uses lots of salt, but the mushrooms were too salty to eat. The mashed potatoes were good, but nothing special. The green beans were barely warm and not cooked. I don't like overcooked veggies, but our beans were flat out not cooked at all. If you're looking for a nice dinner out, I recommend Angus Barn or Ruths Chris instead of Sullivans. more

Great food, good service, expensive 8/31/2008

Very nive atmosphere. Very good service. THe food was great. Everything is a la carte. This makes the meal extremely expensive. Pros: atmosphere, location, food, service Cons: EXPENSIVE- ALL A la Carte more

Mother's Day brunch not up to par 5/12/2008

I've been a fan of Sullivan's for years, and I hoped to walk away a fan as well after the Mother's Day brunch they offered...ehhhh, not so much. Luckily mama was happy, but I (footing the $texas bill) was not . I ordered the waffles and was told they were out. Then our server came back and said they did have waffles. Great! But what I got definitely didn't look like the delicious, fluffy, big triangles with deep pockets that this kid seemed to be enjoying when I first walked in. What did I get?\r \r Eggos...$14 for 4 eggos with fruit topping.\r \r I'll never be attending their Mother's Day brunch again..and probably not for dinner anymore either. This place has certainly gone down the crapper over the years... more

Not living up to the new downtown 5/10/2008

For the price, go to Fin's downtown and enjoy a much better dinner.\r It's Prime Only has steak prepared just as nice. \r Pros: Food Cons: morally corrupt management more

Great spot to bring a group, especially when you want to impress 8/13/2007

We had friends in from New York 2 weeks ago, so we brought them to Sullivans for a night out. I wanted them to see that Raleigh is a nice town and make sure they had a good meal. I think we made the right decision. The food was excellent, I had a nice tender filet cooked as I ordered it. We got several vegetable sides and passed them around the table, everything was flavorful and rich, I especially like the horseradish mashed potatoes. We sat at a big round table so we could all see each other and talk. Our server was fine, just a little hard to hear him at times due to the noise level. Big wine list but the prices are jacked up on the bottles. Sullivan's just is what it is, if you go knowing that you are going to spend a lot, and that you have to have a reservation if you want a good table and don't want to wait forever, I think you will not be disappointed. more

Very good steak restaurant 5/20/2007

We had reservations for Saturday night @ 7:30 and as soon as 7:30 rolled around we were sat. Had the Kansas City strip which was cooked medium rare and it was exactly what I asked for. I did order the peppercorn sauce but you don't need it as the steaks have tons of pepper on them to begin with. One of the people in our party did not like her steak and she sent it back. They took that steak off of our bill. No problem. Wait staff was attentive and fantastic. In terms of flavor for the steak, not the best I have ever had but the best I have had in Raleigh so far. more

Thursday Bar Menu Special Can't Be Beat 5/15/2007

If you've got the bank roll to do it, then eat, drink and be rich in their dining area. But if you're just looking to have a quick meal and cocktail, sit at their bar area on Thursdays and get half off the bar menu. Everything on it is good, minus the stuffed mushrooms. i don't know what they were thinking with putting shrimp in those. more

Great Food, Wonderful Staff 4/28/2007

Walked in on a Saturday night at 8:30, and was told there was a short wait wait, and as soon as we got our drinks we were asked if we were ready to sit. The server was great and by the end of dinner new our names and everything. My steak was awesome- and my dates fish was great. This restaurant is been around for awhile and busy for a reason. I will now dine there 2-3x a month. Pros: Lively, Upbeat, great food and service more

On Expense Account? Then Maybe... 4/23/2007

This is just another chain-version of an ""upscale"" steakhouse built for people on expense accounts, or those who are not but want to impress their friends with what they consider to be an ""upscale"" experience. If you are on an expense account, by all means, definitely go and order everything your heart desires just for the sake of someone else paying for a ridiculous display of excess! That is the reason this place exists and is actually fun to go to sometimes. The highlights are the raw tuna appetizer with wasabi mustard extravaganza, with huge bone-in t-bones of inconsistent quality (sometimes delicious, sometimes taste like a rubber chicken). You'll want to avoid the bar, which appears to be a combination of gray-haired 60-something men, a bunch of cigar smoke, and dancers from Thee DollHouse who have the night off. Pros: fun expense account place Cons: fun expense account place more

Forget making a reservation! 4/13/2007

Horrible service from the hostess. We made a reservation for 8pm. After patiently waiting for an hour (we kept being told it will be a few more minutes), we talked to the hostess. We wanted to know why if you make an 8pm reservation it would take an hour. She said ""that's the way it is everywhere"" and was not at all nice about it. So my date said, ""You're telling me if you make a reservation at 8, you won't get seated for an hour?"" And she said yes! Well, than what is a reservation for? I've never made a reservation at 8pm and expected to get seated at 9pm because it just doesn't happen everywhere! I understand things can get backed up, but the snotty attitude ruined the night. We did not feel welcome at all. more

exactly what we were looking for 3/4/2007

This is my first review--after reading the other reviews i just have to comment on Sullivan's. i went with a group of friends on Saturday night for a pre- Billy Joel dinner party. \r \r We were seated promptly and the service that followed was great..The food that followed was even better. \r \r Sullivans was the perfect place to start our night I will be back..FUN!\r \r \r \r Pros: SERVICE,WINE LIST,STEAKS Cons: it was a pro for us but it was loud more

Not a good date restaurant!! 2/19/2007

Unless your girlfriend is a stripper and doesn't mind looking at waitresses wearing fish net stockings I would hardly say this restaurant is a romantic place to take a date. If you are the type that doesn't like to talk during a date this is the place to go, otherwise, bring a megaphone because it is very loud. With these kind of menu prices I would expect impeccable service and superior food quality and during my last visit we received neither. Some suggestions on the wine menu would have been helpful and our server offered none. Our candle was burned out (minor detail but it's all about the little things) and my steak (medium rare) was dry and the sauteed mushrooms were over-salted.\r \r If you are entertaining business clients or friends this would be a good place to go since the majority of patrons were in larger groups and generally the ones making the noise. If you are planning on taking a date to Sullivans I would suggest making a pit stop to the bar beforehand and taking a look around so you can see for yourself. There is live music and the bar scene looks pretty good. Pros: Good bar scene, fast seating with reservation. Cons: Thumbs down on the romantic scene. more

Great food, Bad drinks 2/15/2007

I would highly recommend Sullivan's for dinner and wine, but not mixed drinks.\r My wife and I went to Sullivan's for Valentine's Day. We made reservations and got sat immediately upon arrival. We ordered a couple martinis from the martini menu. I ordered the margatini with an upgrade to patron tequila. Both of our martinis were so weak that we couldn't taste any alcohol, but mine had an overpowering sweet lime taste although the menu stated it had tequila triple sec and a squeeze of lime. The waiter ended up taking my drink back and serving me a regular margarita, which was half the price and you could tell there was alittle alcohol. \r The waitstaff did a great job and our food was amazing. My wife said that her filet may have been the best one she had ever had. After dinner we stopped next door at the art gallery bar, I don't remember what it was called, but they had much better martinis. We should have gotten a pre-dinner martini here and then went to Sullivan's for dinner. Pros: Great food and service Cons: Bad drinks more

Snotty and arrogant. 2/10/2007

We had planned on having a nice dinner for an anniversary. After visiting the Carolina Crossroads and Ruth Chris in previous years, we had planned on going to Sullivan's this time. When I tried to make reservations over the phone for a Saturday night, I was told that only parties of 8 or over could reserve tables, and that the wait would typically be around 60 to 90 minutes. I thought: ok, they do have a bar and live music, so let's just go there, have a drink and wait for a table...\r \r The anniversary came, and we arrived at Sullivan's around 7. We entered and asked for a table for 2. To my surprise, the hostess asked us to follow her right away. And sure enough... this was to good to be true. After walking through the dining area, we were lead to a smoke filled corner room next to the bar area, with bar stools, and most tables empty, for good reason. The hostess told us to just sit where we liked and was about to leave. When I told asked if we could get on a wait list for the main dining area, she just said that they were booked till 9:30, and left without any further word.\r \r Though the food we saw on others' tables looked good, I just don't put up with this snotty and arrogant attitude. If you don't want our business, just say so, instead of treating us like low class dirt. We walked out, across the street, and had a hearty meal and a few good pints, served by friendly waiters at the Hibernian.\r \r Will we ever consider Sullivan's for a night out? Certainly not! Cons: snotty and arrogant wait staff made us feel unwelcome more

Terrible Birthday Dinner 2/6/2007

Took my boyfriend there for his birthday. Called ahead and made reservations, telling them it was for a birthday. It was a Sunday night after 8pm so not very busy. We did get seated right away at a small table that was connected to a lamp table and then another table. Asked to be moved to a booth, guess I am too picky. Our waiter started out great. However, after we ordered my boyfriend watched our waiter getting fussed out by the manager(?) while staring at our table. After that our food was delivered and our waiter came back once, never asking to get us another drink or anything else. At least 3 other tables were celebrating therefore getting a sparkling dessert while I had to request a dessert menu. Overall just made to feel like we were invisible. Food was pretty good but not worth the $ for the service we got. more

Best Crab Legs Ever! Didn't care for the Mussles, but everything was clean and tasty. The staff is incredible. Ask for private seating if the occaion permits. 1/14/2007

One of the best dining expierences in Raleigh. Everything went smooth, the staff was incredible and the food was tastefully complete. We had the sampler to start, along with 1/2 pound of King Crab legs. The King Crab was possibly the freshest I have ever tasted. The only item my wife and I didn't like were the mussles, but that is just my tastes...I lived in Charleston, SC for years, and I appreciated the seafood at Sullivans. I also recommend a small filet with a side of something special, like lobster. I just had the filet, and couldn't possibly finish the plate, but I wanted to! Dessert was nice, it was my birthday so they were kind and did a nice happy birthday without too much embarassment. All in all, it was a great expierence. Pros: Crab Legs, Steak, Wine, Dessert, Ambience, Staff, Service more

GREAT FOOD & WAITER 12/11/2006

I HAD A GREAT EXPERIENCE AT SULLIVAN'S. IT WAS WORTH EVERY PENNY OF IT. I AM THE HEAD OFONE OF THE BIGGEST HEALTH FACILITIES ON THE NC COAST. WE ARE PLANNING ON BOOKING OUR BIG DINNER AT SULLIVAN'S AND GETTING OUT WONDER WAITER TO ATTEND TO US GALS. JASON (WIGGS) WAS A FANTASTIC WAITER & I HOPE HE WILL BE AVAILABLE. VERY WELL WORTH\r THE EXPERIENCE Pros: EXCELLENT STEAKS & WAIT STAFF Cons: A LITTLE NOISEY more

Great steak, great service 11/19/2006

Went to Sullivans on Saturday night with reservations and was seated immediately. Server (Barbara) was attentive, fun and knowledgeable. My steak was tender and cooked as ordered. It was a pleasant evening and would recommend to anyone. Pros: Steaks, Service & Ambience, good for special occasions Cons: A little pricey more
