STOMACH VIRUS 12/28/2009

At first glance the people are very welcoming and the food is good. Priced fairly well. However after ordering breakfast with (garlic sausage which I don't recommend) MY WIFE, 2 KIDS and I got HORRIBLY SICK. Several hours later we all contracted a STOMACH VIRUS and when I called to inform them they quickly brushed me off and did not even have the consideration to at least find out what we ate so it could be checked on. That REALLY SCARES ME. Primarily because they just quickly swept my complaint under the rug and my only goal was to make sure no one else gets sick. Pros: Interesting Menu Cons: Toxic foods more

Good Food- Recommend Take Out 7/31/2009

Working at one of the nearby hospitals, Square One has long been a favorite to order out from, for breakfast and lunch. The brioche french toast is a favorite, as is the beet salad, and anything with the delicious Nueske bacon. Today, with some time to spare, i brought an out of town visitor to lunch. In reading past reviews, I'm happy to say there is no longer a plague of flies. I was less happy with the friendly wait staff. We sat for 20+ minutes, finally flagging someone to ask if we could order. Another 25 minutes passed, watching food arrive at tables seated long after us, asked if where ours might be? When it arrived, it had clearly been ready long before the bus boy was tapped to bring it. It was an interesting to contrast the difference between eating in and taking out- the food was fresher and nearer the correct temperature range with take out. After bringing my check in the cute little bucket up myself, i left with the resolution to forgo the misery, and simply phone in future orders. For those of you who found the food less than stellar, try the take out option. Our staff seems to be happy, and I must say there was a significant difference to recommend it- on many levels. Pros: Good breakfasts, delicious bacon, diverse menu Cons: Nonexistent, but friendly service more

Awful pancakes 4/27/2009

I consider a ""good"" breakfast restaurant one that gets the basic beginner fare right. Namely, French toast, pancakes, waffles. If you can't do that right, much less charge 9$ for 3 pancakes without toppings, you need help. The pancakes I had APR 25 were made from a cheap mix. I could have gotten better pancakes at IHop.\r Try Marston's in Pasadena. Way better. Pros: anything not sweet is probably okay Cons: I know the pancakes sucked. God help us with the French Toas more

Best French Toast Ever? 1/2/2009

Everything on the menu is stellar. The [brioche] french toast will be in your dreams for weeks. My lady prefers the egg sandwich. Coffee/espresso is above average. Pros: Pure deliciousness, good service Cons: Zero more

Stellar bacon, Cake-Of-The-Day, Homemade pickles .. always leave me wanting more. 11/23/2008

Having spent years in hipster dining in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, I am delighted to see such a star in L.A. Everytime I visit L.A. this place is a must. Where do I begin? Cake-Of-The-Day - let's start there. Whoever is the pastry chef here has got their thing down, specifically variance, freshness, chocolate, and some actual spice on certain days (ie. cayenne, or the like).\r Start with the home-made pickles, choose a bacon dish or just take the bacon as a side (bacon being from a local farm), consider the baked eggs - they are excellent. And finish with the Cake-Of-The-Day obviously - you will not find yourself disappointed.\r The only thing missing are Bloody Marys. No matter - for breakfast, this place is pretty close to perfection on a budget. Pros: Pickles, Dessert, Bacon Cons: No Bloody Marys .. yet more

ZZZZzzzzzzzz SPLAT!! 8/18/2008

Bring a fly swatter....\r \r After reading about it for a while, I dragged a friend there--twice. The comment about the flies is correct: both inside and outside the place is SWARMING. That's an easy problem to fix, however, compared to the bland menu. I felt like I had a cold both times. Dull... flavorless... unimaginative.... dull.... And the trendy crowd with their squalling trendy kids was still shoveling it in...\r \r Try Alcove instead... Pros: No waiting now!! Killing flies keeps kids entertained!! Cons: Food is ordinary at BEST and that whole Biblical pestilence thing... more

:( ...Now I'm not so sure... 8/15/2008

After coming to this place for a year now, and telling a million people about it, I went for breakfast a couple times about week ago and was extremely disappointed. Both times. \r \r There were all these flies that they tried to control by one tiny Venus Fly Trap on the windowsill. But really, they were a total nuisance and after seeing them land on silverware on empty tables, I felt disgusted.\r \r Both times, my dishes came out cold - not timed well with my dining companions which came out warm. I ordered a pressed egg sandwich one day and it was not only cool but runny on the inside - not a good combination and it didn't feel safe to eat. It seemed that they were pretty busy so maybe they have a new crew working? I heard that the original owner left and it's new owners...could this be the issue? Because all the times I came previously were exceptional experiences. I hope these were isolated events and at some point, I will try them again, but I've had to be honest to other people about my recent experiences. \r \r The coffee is good though....\r \r Pros: friendly staff, great location with (usually) easy parking, pretty fast service Cons: flies! food is not timed well more

Okay food, slow service 5/22/2008

The food is alright here, it wasn't anything special. I ordered a breakfast skillet, which was okay. The food also took forever to get to our table. I looked at other people's food and it looked better than mine, I don't know, maybe it depends on what you order? Cons: Slow service, food was okay more

Perfect Sunday Breakfast! 5/4/2008

What a perfect sunday breakfast, both food and service were impeccable. My husband and I sat outside on the patio, started with a delicious soy latte with thick and creamy foam, fresh squeezed OJ. We were tempted to get the french toast as we kept seeing big gooey syrupy plates go by but we opted for eggs instead. I had the egg sandwich with arugula, tomatoes and aioli between 5 grain seeded bread. The quality of ingredients is very high and vibe at Square One sweet. We will definitely be back. Pros: Quality of Food, service, vibe Cons: Parking more

Fresh clean food 3/15/2008

I know clean is a weird way to explain food, but somehow it seems like the right word for Square One. They don't overdo it with unnecessary flavors, everything is simply done... and oh so tasty. I've had the beet salad which was great (although I'd prefer goat to blue cheese), the breakfast sandwich is also super tasty. Glad to have Square One in the neighborhood. Service is super fast, but as this place grows in popularity the wait becomes longer! I just wish they were open for dinner too. Pros: Casual setting, great food, outdoor seating Cons: Can't think of any! more

great hidden gem near silverlake 12/27/2007

went there with some gal pals and had a wonderful brunch. i ordered the beet salad which was wonderful. everyone enjoyed their food and the place was very quaint. Pros: food and outdoor patio more

Lovely Cafe for Brunch 12/16/2007

This was a delightful treasure located in the midst of a somewhat dodgy area right behind the Church of Scientology - but once you step into the cute little space and then into the enclosed back patio, you are transported into a calming haven where you can while away the morning or afternoon with your friends and family. The food is pretty straightforward, fresh and good - nothing complicated. My friends had a yummy looking omelette and a breakfast sandwich with potato salad (quite yummy). I had a puree of celery root soup with apples (very appropos for the holidays - sweet, light and homey) and a grilled cheese sandwich (with gruyere and cheddar)(good). I also had a refreshing morrocan ice tea (yum!). The entire experience was great - from the good food, the friendly competent service, the relaxing atmosphere. I would definitely return here to try their other offerings. Pros: Great Vibe, Delicious Fresh Foods Cons: Parking can be tough more

Truly the Best Breakfast in Town 11/9/2007

I've eaten at my fair share of restaurants known for their breakfasts but Square One Dining truly has made their breakfast dishes works of culinary art. Everything is extremely fresh and you can taste the freshness with each bite. My wife and I have gone here many times trying different items on the menu and we have never been disappointed. If I were to pick a favorite, the lox bennedict over a potato pancake paired with a side salad is just amazing. But I like the pancakes and skillets as well. For all you breakfast fans, this is the place to dine. Pros: The great food speaks for itself Cons: Parking can be hard to find and some may consider the menu a bit pricey but you are paying for good quality more

Bad potatos 8/19/2007

I had the breakfast sandwich with sausage, eggs, aioli, and tomato, on brioche. The sandwich was pretty tasty. Unfortunately, the side of potatos was pretty awful. They were overcooked, dry, and lacked all flavor. I think they were supposed to have rosemary and other herbs, but that was not the case. That was a bummer. I recommend Millies in Silverlake for good breakfast potatos.\r \r The other bummer is the table salt. The salt is flaked, however the dispenser doesn't allow the flakes to actually leave the dispenser because the holes are too small (so I made a mess trying to get some salt on my flavorless potatos). \r \r The wait to be seated for Saturday brunch was brief, which is nice. FYI - arrive at 10:30and be seated immediately. Arrive at 11:00am and wait 10 - 15 minutes. Just a heads up. Pros: Fresh ingredients Cons: Uneven execution more

Excellent Baked Egg Dishes 7/15/2007

Overall, a great experience. We got there around 1:30 on a Sunday. Crowded but not a long wait. Good service, a good bottomless cup of coffee and the food was delish. Enjoy! more

Why can't everywhere else be this good???? 4/19/2007

This is one of the only places I will go out to breakfast now. There's just no comparison. The French Toast with caramelized pecans with homemade vanilla whipped cream is to die for. The applewood smoked bacon is great (it's thick so ask for it extra crispy). The muffins, eggs, ommlets, and orange juice are great too! I just haven't had anything there that wasn't perfect. It's really gormet with normal people prices and atmosphere. Very comfortable. Nice outside dining patio. The owner is always there, he is very open to suggestions, and will make sure your order is perfect no matter what. Pros: Excellent food, excellent service, the right price Cons: Parking can be difficult. more

Outstanding 3/16/2007

Probably the best breakfast place I've been to in L.A. The food was amazing, the staff great and the ambience was perfect. You have to try the french toast with their fresh fruit toppings. You will NOT be disappointed. Pros: food, staff more

small, friendly, somewhat unique but tasty 12/12/2006

My wife, 2-year old, and I went here for brunch last Sunday. We had no problem getting a table, even though the place was pretty small. I ordered an omlette, my wife a baked egg fritatta, and my daughter some pancakes. My omlette was tasty and moist; my wife's baked egg meal was kind of dry and disappointing; my daugher's pancakes were pretty good (yes, I ate my share; the syrup was good quality maple, too). The ambience was funky kitsch, which we enjoyed. Both the manager (owner?) and wait staff were very friendly, which is so refreshing. We also found the restaurant to be kid friendly (e.g., our waitress gave my daughter a book to read; she also gave her a crayon to color on our brown paper table ""cloth""). I would definitely go back here because of the unique (possibly healthy) breakfast offerings and the nice, friendly, relaxed atmosphere and service. Pros: friendly service, unique but tasty meal choices, relaxed ambience Cons: small (could fill up, although that wasn't our experience) more
