Editorial review from Citysearch 4/13/2013

I agree with evaccom who wrote a review in 2011. I came in for root touch-up, after having my hair completely done in February. It was a rush job because I had to attend a funeral in two days. Apparently, they say I made an appointment for highlights and was charged for highlights -- but my roots were done! No highlights ordered! \r \r Be careful, something is amiss with this salon. There was one bowl on the table, and it was used for my roots and to pull the color through. I was under the heat for 25 min, washed, and left at the bowl. Had to ask for a towel because I didn't have time for a dry. The comb out was another story too. \r \r Thank goodness there are other organic salons. And, I don't think that a stylist who has adorned her body with tattoos and smokes between customers embodies the environment of a ORGANIC salon. more

Cry No More 5/8/2009

So I orginally had been going to Tenpachi and loved all my haircuts/colors, but unfortunatly my favorite lady left and had to go to a new girl. I walked out looking like fraggle, burned my scalp multiple times, blowdrying straightening and doing everything i could to tame my frizzy short bangs, and wild spiky ends. I have a lot of wavy hair with cow licks and this women cut them wrong every way, my bangs perpetually looked like ""There's Something About Mary"" I suffered headaches for months as hair spray and head bands held down my fraggle-do/troll doll cut. Pros: Naomi Greene, Awesome shampoo girl, no weird smells Cons: NADA (you need to save money-the $70 with tip is worth it) more

great haircut 3/18/2009

The energy at Sprouts is cool and hip without the attitude. The one time I wasn't thrilled with my haircut, Rachel suggested I ""be with the haircut a few days before changing it"" Great advice. The haircut worked after all and grew out well. This past visit was with Naomi, a very talented stylist who gave me an excellent cut, exactly what I was looking for. A good haircut is not cheap and you get what you pay for. At Sprout you get a good haircut. Pros: exactly what I asked for Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

Finally! 3/11/2009

I finally found an amazing haircut that not only looked great leaving the salon, but still looks equally great when i do it myself. As a guy every other cut I have received looked good when i walked out the door, but could not be replicated later by myself. Leah listened to what i wanted and did in a way that worked for me. You get what you pay for!!! Pros: Listened to what i wanted and made it work for me! Cons: Not many styling products for men. more

Sprout is Overpriced 3/6/2009

I went to the salon on the recommendation of a friend. I used her stylist. She gets charged $35 for her cut. I have very, very short hair. I was in the chair for 10 minutes after the shampoo and I got charged $60! I was in and out of the salon in 30 minutes, including the pre-cut discussion and the post-cut payment. It was like I got charged extra to breathe the air inside the trendy and pretentious salon. The salon web site lists men's & women's cuts $35-70. I will not be going back to Sprout. Pros: 'In the neighborhood' Cons: Very over priced more

The review from Last person must be from a salon down the street 3/3/2009

How odd the hair color smelled like coconuts.. How stinky can coconuts be ? I received a beautiful cut.. My haircolor service was exactly what I communicated.. Leah is who I go to..Prices are comparable to an upscale salon.. The color lasts forever.. My hair is left in good condition ..and Hamden is safe and interesting more

Great Haircuts 2/26/2009

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but after spending years looking for someone to trust with my hair, CLIFF IS MY HERO! I am extremely picky about my hair and have been scalped by the best. Cliff has been cutting my hair for about a year and it is always great! No more bad hair days and I can sit in his chair and relax knowing that I'm being cut by someone who really knows what he is doing. more

LEAH TAYLOR IS MY HAIR GODDESS 1/23/2009

Taylor has been pruning my locks for over 5 years now and let me tell you any time i've strayed ive kicked myself. And every time she has accepted me back with a smile. That girl has style and it radiates to her designs. On top of that she is well-rounded, i've seen her go from up-dos to punnnnnnnk rock. I highly recommend her to anyone a little lost and in need of a new style. Just not too many people, I don't want to elbow my way in for a cut and color. My lastest cut is my favorite- thanks LEAH!!! more

Sprout Rocks! 1/22/2009

I had a haircut phobia for years, but Cliff cured it. He's awesome! On my first visit, he took extra time to consult with me (and to reassure me) and gave me the best cut I've ever had. Now I see him regularly for a cut and color, and I look forward to going in. Sprout itself is a beautifully designed space with attention to all sorts of cool detail. The co-owner, Alan, is a total sweetheart, and his organic products rock. I especially like the texture spray. I can't stop raving about Sprout! Pros: Cliff, Alan, the space itself. Everyone who works there is lovely. more

Rip off for crappy work 1/21/2009

Went to Sprout, had my hair conditioned twice instead of shampooed. My hair looked nasty with the excessive conditioning product and the hair stylist ignored it, tried to spritz some water on it but it looked like they smothered Crisco on my hair. more

What a horrible place! 1/2/2009

Organic?? These are a bunch of fakes, who say that they are for the earth and not harming yourself with chemicals, when the owner has more tatoo's than bare skin. Does she think shoving dye under your skin rank as organic? My hair stinks...literally, and they didn't listen to a word I said of what I wanted. Save yourself a lot of money and go to a REAL hair salon. Tabatha would laugh you out of business.....I am more organic than you will ever profess to be. A total sham. Cons: A total ripoff. more

A beautiful cut for me 12/9/2008

I got the haircut I've been dreaming about since 2003 from Holly today. She was fastidious and meticulous and a real Baltimore girl, through and through. She rocks and really knows what she's doing. Beautiful cut in a beautiful place. Pros: good smells and listeners Cons: my posture sucks--but my hair is RAWSOME more

Horrible Expereince.. Where do I begin? . Arrogant Stylists.. Expensive.. No consultation 12/5/2008

I had a similar experience as some of the other reviewers about Sprout. They did not consult with me, just started cutting my hair and coloring it. I asked questions but it almost seemed like I was bothering them by asking. No customer service at all. They almost act as if you should be so worthy to go to them to get your hair cut and colored. Never again. more

Terrible color experience 11/19/2008

Having just moved to the neighborhood, I thought I would try an Organic salon, which is inline with my philosophy about beauty products. I had bleach blonde hair, which was really really bright when I walked into the salon, and wanted to step down to a sandy brown. I choose the color from the swatch book, along with my stylist, which was NOT an unreasonable color (some people want to go from black to blonde or blonde to bright red with highlights which is not possible in one sitting).Anyway, despite my pick being totally do-able my hair turned grey because it was not left on to develop. The stylist meanwhile was going on and on about how she trained in L.A. at Paul Mitchell studios and how she knew all this edgy techniques, and blah blah= I was not impressed because my hair was mother (insert obsenity) gray. Seriously? I am in my young twenties, I want to look hot honestly, and I had gray hair. The stylist realized the color looked like something out of a $3.99 Walmart special and tried to save it, to no avail. Oh, then charged me 200$ which I paid (because I am clearly a pushover). Pros: Nice atmosphere, interesting people to look at, really Cons: Ugh the lack of skill and the ego just made me vom a little more

FABULOUS color & cut from Holly! 11/14/2008

I am the type of person who is never satisfied with her hair, and I am constantly changing styles. For the first time in my life, I've found a hairstylist who makes me happy with my hair that I'm not changing it anymore. I was recommended to Holly at Sprout and have never looked back! Pros: Innovative, Ambience, Service, Organic, Friendly, Clean, Talented Cons: Parking more

Expert color and styling at Sprout 10/14/2008

I recently had highlights, a cut and blow-dry at Sprout for the first time and am thrilled! Naomi was my stylist, and she certainly captured the ""look"" of the photo of the hairstyle I had brought as a guide. I felt I was in the hands of a pro...she was an expert with the color application (base color and highlights went more quickly than I've experienced elsewhere, but without the smears on my neck and face I've experienced elsewhere), and she was meticulous in her styling, taking time to ""finish"" the cut after it was dry with some final snips. It was also a bonus not to be exposed to harsh chemical odors at the salon. I'm getting lots of compliments at work on my hair...and I'm recommending Naomi and Sprout! more

Not worth it... 9/8/2008

I live really close to the salon, so I thought that I would give it a try. I don't mind spending money on a haircut...I have long hair and only get it cut a few times a year. I got an appointment with the owner, Rachael. I have curly hair and she was recommended for curly hair. Since I had never gone to see her before, I assumed that she would want to see what my hair looks like dry. She didn't see me until after I had been washed and didn't really have much of a consultation with me. The cut seemed fine, I guess, but then her next client arrived before she finished. She seemed surprised that I wanted a blowdry...apparently she doesn't really do that. What? So she gave me over to an assistant who had never given a blowdry before. After all the product that was sprayed into my hair, 2 spritzes per tiny section and the not very good blowdry, Rachael used a razor! I have never had a razor used on my hair...a bad idea for curls. So for $80, I got an average haircut and a bad, greasy blowdry. She is the owner so at least I didn't have to tip. more

Saved my wedding...Rachel is the best! 8/22/2008

I've known Rachel as a social acquaintance for a couple of years. Never did I dream that she would be the ONLY reason I looked good for my wedding. Just two months prior to the big day, my groom had a stroke, leaving him with a major visual impairment. Our world was turned upside down. Trying to get all the details done for the wedding seemed impossible. more

Great cuts and Really Good Color 8/9/2008

I've spent 9 years in Baltimore trying to find a place that can give an excellent cut (one that flows whether I style or not) and subtle color that blends for me (and avoids those awful chemicals. more
