Worst

Went here for a bday party...and it was actually a great space...but I left deaf. That decibel level is just unnecessary. Really. Bring earplugs.

rude bar staff, horrible service 9/12/2010

Bartender refused service because he said I didn't tip him last time. Normally, I would sympathize even though bartenders should by rule never serve based on tips (I've worked many years as a manager of a lounge in nyc), but the fact that I was ordering my first round of drinks so obviously he was rudely mistaken. Never go here- weak drinks, overpriced, rude and lame crowd. more

awful experience 9/11/2010

Really? Are 2 bouncers (rude, grunting, overly confident) necessary at this empty bar? Apparently. Went here a couple weeks ago with my girlfriends and found the place overcrowded with under-age NYU guys and the bartenders (also all men) were completely rude and ignoring us (mid-20s, ladies, full-time jobs, with someplace laid back to unwind). Overall, lame music, lame group, skip it and go to one of the 500 bars in the area... more

Good Venue for Private Parties 8/1/2010

Solas has become a popular venue for birthday parties among my friends. There is a dance floor in another separate room and there are two floors on the other side where they play different music and offer a quieter lounging area. I like it because you can choose to be dancing on the floor or chill on the couch sipping cocktail with friends. Pros: Separate Dance Floor and lounge more

The Go-To Spot in the Hood 4/25/2010

Solas is our go-to spot in the East Village no matter the group we are with, time of night or level of intoxication. The place is completely unpretentious and has an overall good vibe. The front room offers a bar with board games, a floor above is a comfy lounge and the side room is a spacious dance floor complete with another bar and DJ. Though there are doormen of sorts, there really is no dress code here. Most of the crowd is trendy-casual but there are sneakers and prom dresses alike. My favorite part of the dance floor are the tables/booths (no, you don't need to buy a $400 bottle to reserve) to hang out, rest your feet, and watch crazy dancers. The crowd is mixed as well, though it usually leans toward the young professional 20s-30s group. Generally a crowd pleaser and great last-minute spot when it's 3 am and you just have to get that last bar in! Pros: plenty of space, board games, music Cons: drink prices more

RUDE RUDE MANAGEMENT! 8/10/2009

I was in one of the side rooms last night for a meetup.com seminar. Not only did the room smell like turpentine (i guess they were renovating) but the manager (a tall, bald, brut of a man with glasses and a LOUD Irish accent) walks into the room and starts showing it to prospective clients interested in renting it. In the middle of our class. We were all clearly in the midst of something. The class leader went to speak to him and he basically dismissed her. She asked if the a/c was turned on and his first response was yes it was (it wasn't) and his second was are you drinking (??) come to find out he didn't want to turn the a/c on unless we were buying drinks. MIND YOU we already paid for the event, AND most of us had already purchased drinks before the class. He mad this clear when he turned on the a/c and said you need to buy drinks a/c is expensive (or something to that effect). TERRIBLE TERRIBLE DONT GO! more

Would never have an event here! 8/10/2009

I was also present at the meetup group written by another poster on here. The manager was rude beyond belief...I concur with everything she said. The female bartender on the job that evening was very nice though- I know-because contrary to what the manager believes- I had two drinks prior to the start of our class! I think the manager needs to learn a little something about customer service. Not only would I never attend an event there ever again...I would never recommend the bar to others and will never be a patron there again. more

Great place to bring a party 4/8/2009

One of those reviews you don't really want to write because you don't want a different crowd showing up at a place you really liked. I brought a group of about 10 people here last Saturday and had an awesome time. I had called well in advance and the manager was cool and reserved a table for us. Everyone was very comfortable -- the music was good, the bartenders were busy but very nice and worked FAST. Despite a full house we never waited more than a couple of minutes to get drinks... much better than most places. There was plenty of room to dance and to hang out: full, but definitely not elbow to elbow. We liked that there are other rooms but stayed nearby our table; we'll have to come back a different night to explore further. Overall it was a fun vibe -- not chaotic and not uptight. Everyone had a great time and we closed the place. The only complaint we had was that sometimes they'd play a great song for maybe 45 seconds and then switch. Mostly we liked the music though; not enough to keep it from getting 5 stars. Pros: Plenty of people yet plenty of space Cons: Music medleys more

Good Pint o Guinness 3/7/2009

They pour a good pint here, and the decor and feel is a bit different from a standard Irish pub. Solas sets itself apart. The upstairs space is cozy, with texture and small tables. Downstairs is the full bar. The service is pretty friendly, and the vibe is a bit younger than some other Irish bars in the hood. more

Great Birthday spot 2/2/2009

I wanted to have a bunch of my friends go out for my birthday, and I know I usually have fun at Solas. I spoke to the managers at Solas, and they really took care of us. They kept our tables like they said they would and they kept coming back to make sure we all had enough drinks. It's great that they have different areas with different stuff going on within the bar. The place started emptying out a little around 2:30, but it was a freezing January Saturday night. more

left hand doesnt know what the right hand is doing 8/15/2008

The day manager is extremely accommodating, thorough, and organized. The night manager on the other hand is a rude power tripping fool. He instructed his wait staff to remove guests who were occupying booths from a previous party (who'd rented the room) and told them to leave! What bar does that?!? Excuse me, can you leave the bar since you're all drinking and making us money Then when the event organizer and patron who'd rented the spot confronted him, he denied it and backpedaled a bit.. then accused the patron of only having 20 or so guests when there were obviously 40 people there. It was such a mess, they bumped our DJs, kicked our guests out.. some people were so disgusted they left the premises even before we could migrate the party to a more friendly venue. Thanks a lot Solas. It'll be a cold day in hell the next time any of us grace this place with our business ever again. more

Really Bad Policy 8/9/2008

If you plan to have a party here, get everything in writing! A verbal agreement will only get you so far. Here's how last night's private event panned out.... there is a 20% gratuity added to all credit cards, which was not clear at first when cash tips were implied. A private event with professional DJs lined up to play until 4am was agreed over the phone among several constituents. Then at 11pm Solas decides to bring in their own resident DJ blasting Hip Hop music. Really bad policy is that they booked three parties on the SAME night. Feeling very unwelcomed by the staff at SOLAS, we managed to get VIP treatment at Saphire Lounge off Houston St. at Midnight. more

spacious and fun 8/6/2008

Though it gets crowded on weekends it's a big place and the bartenders are all pretty awesome dudes. Wish there were more ladies working there...saw a gorgeous brunette once when I went in but she either just started or was learning there...and haven't seen her since. too bad...she was nice too! Pros: good staff Cons: a bit crowded on weekends more

Owner Message
  • A fun, relaxing place for all. Let your inner star shine with Monday Night Karaoke or jam out on Sundays with 80's Music Request Night. Tuesdays thru Thursdays offer just as much excitement at Solas. This loungey tri-level bar offers great specialty drinks including margaritas and martinis with hip music, all served up by a cool and inviting staff. If you want to catch the last inning of the game, no worry the bar has a huge flat screen. After work with a group, grab a couch and a cocktail at Solas. Solas- the only spot to cocktail in the East Village.

Editorial
  • The Scene
It could be said that coming back to this place (many folks are repeat customers) is like slipping into a favorite pair of sexy jeans--comfortable, familiar, yet still a little exciting. The main floor combines an embracing Irish-pub feel with lanterns and sculptured-metal hanging lamps that glow a soothing orange. Happy hour is rousing, but Friday and Saturday nights groove with a DJ and shameless flirtation.

    The Draw
Upstairs, a lounge vibe sets in--it's a slightly evocative red room snug with couches, mirrors and candles, and another adjoining area spotted with armchairs. With a fine-looking clientele, Irish bartenders who remember names and faces even if it's been months, and a warm atmosphere with potential to heat up, Solas is hip without trying to be the hippest.
