Best

Hey my name is Avi and i host nightly at some of the best clubs and venues in the city such as: 1oak, SL, Catch, WIP, Stash, RdV, Tenjune, Riff Raff, Greenhouse, Gansevoort Park, ...

Worst

Went here for a bday party...and it was actually a great space...but I left deaf. That decibel level is just unnecessary. Really. Bring earplugs.

satisfying for anyone 5/3/2006

I went to Solas last weekend to celebrate my birthday with a full range of friends (richer/poorer, uptight/laid back, girls/guys). It seemed like each of them had a good time, as at least one of Solas' four or so rooms had something to offer each person. The drinks were good and moderately priced and the service was fairly quick. The bar was full of people but not overly crowded. As a single guy, i definitely appreciated the plentiful girls (although the ratio isn't like the type of place that lets in only one guy for every 4 girls). I'll definitely go again. Pros: inexpensive, fun crowd Cons: line at door more

Great Staff 1/30/2006

I had my birthday party here this past weekend. It was so crowded that a line was created outside of this small bar, because they literally couldn't fit any more people inside. Despite the crowd, however, the drinks are reasonably priced and Kevin, the manager, is really nice and accomidating. The bartenders are also really nice. I recommend this place to hang out.. just not for a large party (unless you rent the place out!). Pros: Friendly Staff, Management, Drink Prices Cons: Crowded more

WORST PLACE EVER 11/12/2005

WE BOOKED A PARTY FOR A SATURDAY NIGHT HERE. WE CALLED SEVERAL TIMES DURING THE WEEK TO CONFIRM AND MAKE SURE THAT ALL OF OUR FRIENDS WOULD BE ABLE TO GET IN AND NOT HAVE A PROBLEM AT THE DOOR - WE WERE ASSURED THAT THERE WOULD BE NO PROBLEMS. WHEN WE ARRIVED, THERE WERE 2 OTHER PARTIES BOOKED. OUR FRIENDS COULD NOT GET IN BECAUSE APPARENTLY THE DOOR MEN HAVE MISTAKEN THIS LOWER EAST SIDE BAR FOR MARQUEE - YELLING AT PEOPLE THAT THEY WOULD NEVER GET IN - AND THE MANAGER AND OWNER WERE RUDE AND UNHELPFUL. THEY BLATANTLY LIED TO US OVER THE PHONE. THEY ALSO DO NOT BELIEVE IN AIR CONDITIONING.THE SERVICE AND TREATMENT WERE APPALING, AND I WOULD NEVER GO BACK OR RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE. Cons: DOORMAN, OWNER, MANAGEMENT more

great place 7/27/2005

solas is a great place to chill out with friends, or even to meet new people. the staff is absolutely amable and the service is great. the dj changes up from time to time, but overall the music there is great. ranges from alternative to hip-hop: depends on the night and where you are in the place. the decor's pretty chill, as well. sola's the type of place you know you'll visit again. Pros: staff, music, atmosphere more

Awesome, must see 10/17/2004

I only went here for like 30 minutes on Saturday after 2:30 but it was enough to see that I need to come back. The atmosphere was really cool, very east village. The crowd was very laid back but still had some potential for random hook ups. Great place! Pros: Atmosphere, Crowd more

Solas (n. pro: ""sull-us"".) 9/20/2004

Solas is quite simply the best bar in New York. Successfully straddling weeknight coziness and weekend hipness, Solas appeal lies is in its incredibly warm staff and management who bring good vibes, great service, terrific music and, for us ex-pats, a place to visit home when particularly homesick. Although an Irish-owned pub, don't expect shamrocks and shennanigans, just the craic, warmth and excellence that is sadly lacking from most bars here and certainly Solas's counterparts in Dublin. Check out upstairs on Fridays and Saturdays for resident Ipod-jockey Kevin's smooth blend of old and new. more

The Best Secret in The Lower East Side 6/1/2004

Perfect combination they have working in this Lower East Side bar/lounge. Staff, atmosphere, music, space, blah blah blah. Come check it out for yourself!! I travel across/downtown to visit the friendly staff, chic(minus the pretentiousness) clientele, and great DJ. Ask for Willy in the front bar, or Ryan in the back.....two of the best b-tenders this city has to offer. BUT KEEP IT A SECRET.........WE DON'T WANT THE B&Ts TO RUIN THE PLACE!!!!! Pros: STAFF, MUSIC, ATMOSPHERE more

Looks nice 5/17/2004

This place is alright. In the summer they open up all the front part of the place which is nice and the downstairs gets jammed at times. If that's the case when you go, head upstairs, usually there is NOBODY up there.....kinda weird it's like people don't know it exists. I've been there a number of times and it's hit or miss in terms of people, women, and good music. Not much in the drinks, stick to booze. Oh yea, there is like one bathroom, but there is one by the kitchen upstairs nobody knows about.....well now you do! Pros: Hidden Bathrooms more

Sweet .... 7/28/2003

I had my girlfriend's Surprise B'day party in Solas which was off the hook. I would attribute it to the cool staff .... u were awesome Juillete. The staff was quite helpful: they kept the cake in their deep freeze. Everyone is still raving about the place and and the crowd. The drink portions were BIG .... and they were quite reasonable. Though I have one complaint: The Coal Room was madd hot, No A.C in there !! Made us madd thirsty for the alcohol ... Pros: Friendly Staff, BIG Drinks, Cheap, Nice Mix of crowd Cons: No AC in Coal Room more

so gonna be there. 6/1/2003

my friend has had her bday party here twice. and they both rocked! I dont know if we were lucky or if some of the other reviewers were unlucky, but we got the private room and it was kept private. the music at first was not all that great, but then picked up after about 10pm or so. i really like the RED private room so much that i am planning on having my bday there. also, you get your own private waitress for the private room. ask for the girl from harrisburgh PA (really cute tiny) she was very friendly and prompt. more

This place is charming and funky 4/15/2003

I don't know why one of the raters had a problem with the crowd. Perhaps she's the one with a complex. This is not the kind of place where you'll find a certain type of person going. The bartenders are very cute & the bar staff is generally friendly. David Holmes DJs there on occasion. Aside from that the music is great. (No they don't only play U2) There is a cool red room upstairs. Downstairs you'll find a dimly lit bar area, and a funky new age bar room. It's great. Probably the type of place you'd pass a few times before you'd notice it's there. The size is deceiving. It has 2 floors...you wouldn't guess it from outside! It could definitely become one of the more popular places in the East Village to go to. My friends and I love it. I would DEFINITELY recommend it. Pros: Nice Ambiance, Good Looking Staff, Great Music Cons: Can be pretty crowded more

Pubby yet loungey--not an identity crisis, but a bar with two sides, both nice.

Owner Message
  • A fun, relaxing place for all. Let your inner star shine with Monday Night Karaoke or jam out on Sundays with 80's Music Request Night. Tuesdays thru Thursdays offer just as much excitement at Solas. This loungey tri-level bar offers great specialty drinks including margaritas and martinis with hip music, all served up by a cool and inviting staff. If you want to catch the last inning of the game, no worry the bar has a huge flat screen. After work with a group, grab a couch and a cocktail at Solas. Solas- the only spot to cocktail in the East Village.

Editorial
  • The Scene
It could be said that coming back to this place (many folks are repeat customers) is like slipping into a favorite pair of sexy jeans--comfortable, familiar, yet still a little exciting. The main floor combines an embracing Irish-pub feel with lanterns and sculptured-metal hanging lamps that glow a soothing orange. Happy hour is rousing, but Friday and Saturday nights groove with a DJ and shameless flirtation.

    The Draw
Upstairs, a lounge vibe sets in--it's a slightly evocative red room snug with couches, mirrors and candles, and another adjoining area spotted with armchairs. With a fine-looking clientele, Irish bartenders who remember names and faces even if it's been months, and a warm atmosphere with potential to heat up, Solas is hip without trying to be the hippest.
