Best

Hey my name is Avi and i host nightly at some of the best clubs and venues in the city such as: 1oak, SL, Catch, WIP, Stash, RdV, Tenjune, Riff Raff, Greenhouse, Gansevoort Park, ...

Worst

Went here for a bday party...and it was actually a great space...but I left deaf. That decibel level is just unnecessary. Really. Bring earplugs.

This place is charming and funky 4/14/2003

I don't know why one of the raters had a problem with the crowd. Perhaps she's the one with a complex. This is not the kind of place where you'll find a certain type of person going. The bartenders are very cute & the bar staff is generally friendly. David Holmes DJs there on occasion. Aside from that the music is great. (No they don't only play U2) There is a cool red room upstairs. Downstairs you'll find a dimly lit bar area, and a funky new age bar room. It's great. Probably the type of place you'd pass a few times before you'd notice it's there. The size is deceiving. It has 2 floors...you wouldn't guess it from outside! It could definitely become one of the more popular places in the East Village to go to. My friends and I love it. I would DEFINITELY recommend it. Pros: Nice Ambiance, Good Looking Staff, Great Music Cons: Can be pretty crowded more

never heard of it 10/16/2002

after a very, very wet weekend its nice to see some bars in the city still have the power to get you out as the weather gets bad. great music, nice crowd and had a laugh with the bar staff. definitely worth a visit, sat in this cool little red, lowly lit room upstairs. check it out Pros: nicely lit, good music, good fun more

Maybe I went on an off night . . . 9/20/2002

Went on a Thursday and this place was a complete joke. Seemed to be a local bar. Decent music. I suppose you could score here - if there were hot girls. Plus: Sort of hot bartender who has nice lips. She's into karate, so be careful. I guess it could have potential. more

Solas - Drink & Be Merry!! 9/4/2002

I had my 28th birthday party there and got to choose any where in the place that I wanted, and it was excellent. We had our on waitress and were treated well. Sammy, the owner is just the best along with the staff!! Everyone enjoyed it and since then other people are now having parties there. I just would only want to add a small appetizer menu especially coming from work. Pros: Atmosphere, Management, Easy to find Cons: No food at all., Drinks are expensive more

Up and Coming 7/31/2002

Been there lotsa times now out of a group of 20 not 1 dislike it, function room to right very slick for an irish bar resembles actually the new age irish bars of Dublin. Cool party nights and great drunken fun at the bar plenty of floors and space to find a spot that suits you! Getting busier by the day will be a very popular spot within a month or two. I'm happy there. Pros: realistically irish, funky, lighting and happy hr more

Ick, ick, and, oh yeah, icky 6/29/2002

My friends and I went to the newish room at Solas tonight (with its separate entrance just to the right of the main door). We had been there quite a few times recently, but tonight, after our server had brought our second round of drinks, another server, who was shorter with long dark curly hair, came over and demanded we leave our table (hi - how many other empty tables were there?). Apparently, suddenly the bar had been reserved for a private party. Had we known this earlier, and had the server allowed us to finish our drinks at our table, we would have no problem going back. But, now I cannot fathom anybody wanting to subject themselves to such under-hyped, undeserved despicable-ness. This place really sucks, and yet the servers are power hungry losers. No wonder it's almost always empty. Pros: Almost always empty, Good drinks Cons: RUDE service, TERRIBLE service more

Pubby yet loungey--not an identity crisis, but a bar with two sides, both nice.

Owner Message
  • A fun, relaxing place for all. Let your inner star shine with Monday Night Karaoke or jam out on Sundays with 80's Music Request Night. Tuesdays thru Thursdays offer just as much excitement at Solas. This loungey tri-level bar offers great specialty drinks including margaritas and martinis with hip music, all served up by a cool and inviting staff. If you want to catch the last inning of the game, no worry the bar has a huge flat screen. After work with a group, grab a couch and a cocktail at Solas. Solas- the only spot to cocktail in the East Village.

Editorial
  • The Scene
It could be said that coming back to this place (many folks are repeat customers) is like slipping into a favorite pair of sexy jeans--comfortable, familiar, yet still a little exciting. The main floor combines an embracing Irish-pub feel with lanterns and sculptured-metal hanging lamps that glow a soothing orange. Happy hour is rousing, but Friday and Saturday nights groove with a DJ and shameless flirtation.

    The Draw
Upstairs, a lounge vibe sets in--it's a slightly evocative red room snug with couches, mirrors and candles, and another adjoining area spotted with armchairs. With a fine-looking clientele, Irish bartenders who remember names and faces even if it's been months, and a warm atmosphere with potential to heat up, Solas is hip without trying to be the hippest.
