I just had a pole dancing class for my future sister-in-law's bachelorette party with 8 girls total and all I can say is ahhhh-mazing! There are 8 poles total in each class so be ...

Interesting. I did a search to read these reviews again, after taking a really awful hiphop class at Shockra. I saw the one review that panned the class, which really confirms my ...

a great place to learn samba 4/12/2009

I took the 6 week absolute beginner samba/pole class at Shockra with Keisha and it was GREAT ! Pros: class size, instructor more

doesn't get any better 4/11/2009

I started off with my sister for a 6 week kettlepole workshop with Vicky. We LOVED it so much that we put together a group of our own to do a more private 6 week kettlepole series. Although we are still in the middle of this series, I love Vicky SO MUCH that I actually signed up to do 20 private personal training sessions with Vicky. Now, for me, this is HUGE. It's HUGE b/c I am in no way, shape, or form, a physically fit person. I'm pretty uncoordinated and my endurance for exercise is not very high at all. However, even with all this to take into consideration, Vicky is SUCH A GREAT MOTIVATOR and TRAINER that I actually felt motivated enough to do personal training with her. She knows how to push you in a HEALTHY and FUN way. She realizes everyone is different and tries to accomodate that into how she teaches you to do different things. I ALWAYS said I'd NEVER have someone personally train me b/c too many trainers just don't care and push people to injury. Vicky is the exact opposite of this and I can't see myself training with anyone else. Pros: EVERYTHING Cons: nothing more

Hooked on Bellydance! 4/11/2009

I've been taking bellydance with Keisha for about a year and i'm hooked! I regulary take open class and have signed up for several 6 week workshops as well. Classes are fun, unintimidating and everyone is really friendly. Keisha is very knowledgeable, extremely patient and breaks down all the steps so anyone can do them. Overall she is an excellent instructor. I'm so happy to have found this class! If you're lucky to be close enough, I highly recommend taking bellydance class with Keisha at Shockra Studio!! Pros: Unintimidating, fun way to sneak in a workout more

practical dance instruction 4/10/2009

I took the 6 week absolute beginner hip hop class at Shockra and it is by far the best beginner dance class I have taken in Manhattan. I love to go out dancing, but wanted to improve my coordination, to learn a few more moves, and to be able to keep up with the dance classes at the gym for exercise. Unlike most instructors who only like and/or know how to teach to naturals, Jessica can break things down into simple steps and she is genuinely enthusiastic to offer as much explanation and repetition as needed. The atmosphere of the class (6-8ppl) is comfortable, very non-judgmental. By the end of the six weeks you learn a routine of basic moves you can do for the full length of almost any song. I also did two private sessions with Jessica and she really helped me hone in on how I can improve my movement. Overall, I highly recommend Shockra and I look forward to taking more classes there. more

Great Hip Hop classes! 4/10/2009

I just wrapped up my 6-week beginner hip hop class with Jessica and I can't say enough good things! She really broke down the steps and by the end I didn't even realize that I had learned enough to do a whole routine. I loved the class so much that I am already signed up for level 2! Pros: FUN Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

I'm learning to shimmy! 4/8/2009

All I wanted was a new way to stay active. Going to the gym had lost its appeal and I’m not interested in sports. I was drawn to Shockra Studios because it has a belly dance class for ABSOLUTE beginners, which I am. When I first started I was self conscience, awkward and stiff. Keisha, the instructor, leads the class step by step through warm ups, isolations and dance steps. She gives pep talks that melt away inhibitions and self consciousness. She’s alert and attentive to anyone who’s having a difficult time catching on. And if laughter can be considered part of the workout, Keisha’s wonderful sense of humor will have those core muscles contracting like crazy. She obviously has a passion for dancing and for teaching others to dance. I’m glad I found her. Since I’ve started taking classes at Shockra, I’ve lost weight, I’m not ashamed to expose my jelly-belly and I’m not as awkward or stiff. I have lots of fun there and I look forward to going week after week. I could ramble on forever, but I’ll just end by saying, if you’re considering taking a dance class, check out Shockra first. I think you’ll really like it. Enough said! I gotta go practice my shimmy! Pros: Example: best croissants in town Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

Highly Recommended 4/7/2009

I can’t recommend SHOCKra studio enough. This place is exactly what I was looking for: relaxed, professional, high energy (at the same time as relaxed, yes). It has been the perfect environment for me to learn hip hop dance and salsa. They really care about the development of their clientele and the classes are a lot more functional than those I’ve taken elsewhere. By this I mean that a lot of studios concentrate on showing you one routine, while SHOCKra focuses on your body awareness and basic moves so that you can actually develop your own personal style rather than a canned 30-second show. The staff are all very friendly and take a personal approach to teaching. Pros: Too many to list. Read the review... Cons: Studio space not huge, but this is NYC... more

Keisha Rocks!!!! 3/28/2009

I absolutely love belly dance with Keisha. The vibe of the class is really relaxed and Keisha breaks down all the moves in a way that anyone can understand. She's super patient and positive and by the end of class you feel like a goddess who can conquer the world. \r \r I've been taking classes for about a year and look forward to belly dancing weekly because its fun,its exercise without having to go to the gym and you feel se xy and confident shimmying and moving your hips to the music. I'd recommend this class to anyone even if you're shy or have never taken a dance class in your life. Keisha goes out of her way to make sure everyone is on the same page and feels comfortable in class. Pros: You come outta class feeling like a goddess! Cons: Class goes by too quickly! more

Top 5 favorite things to do 3/15/2009

Absolute beginner fantastic classes! no judgement! no show-offs! just people learning to dance and having a blast doing it! the teachers are so talented! they have tons of personality! And the classes are so challenging and so fun! I can't stress this enough! I seriously dance and laugh, mostly at myself, for an hour! I go home so happy! What more can you really ask for?! Oh. I know! progress! confidence! Shockra is just the best thing ever! Go dance! Pros: instructors, environment, class size Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

I used to say, 3/7/2009

So it's New Year's Eve and I'm at a loft party in DUMBO. By all accounts I should be having the time of my life. But no. Instead I'm ""that guy"" you see at every party; standing in the corner with hands in my pockets and a very serious look on my face. It didn't take too long to realize that I'm that guy because I wasn't dancing. Right then and there I realized what my New Year's resolution was... In 2009 I will dance! The afternoon of January 1st I registered for the beginners class with Jessica and I haven't looked back. I went dancing for my birthday (Feb. 24)!\r \r I registered for another series of classes. The beginners classes are not only small but all the students are new to the world of dancing so it's impossible to even think that you're making a fool of yourself. If your fear of stepping on the dance floor is as socially debilitating for you as it was for me I highly suggest taking a class at Shockra. I can't say that I'll be dancing in any music videos tomorrow, but if I stick to it maybe that will be my resolution for 2010 ;o)... For now, at least when I go out I'm not wallflowering it anymore.\r \r Shockra Rocks!\r \r -Marko Galjasevic Pros: I catch myself dancing in public Cons: I catch myself dancing in public more

Great dance studio, great teacher and great fun! 3/5/2009

I really enjoy the classes here and I have signed up for another class. I am not a good dancer, but Jessica's fun and relaxing classes have taught me some good moves and also taught me to enjoy myself on the dance floor. The class sizes are small and non-intimidating and Jessica really helps people learn and enjoy themselves. Pros: Great atmosphere, fun and entertaining Cons: You will catch yourself trying your new moves in public places more

Jessica is a real find! 3/4/2009

\r \r Amazing hip hop teacher Jessica not only teaches you (with TLC) how to move like you know what you are doing. She also teaches you the right dance protocol and body language so that you never give yourself away as a beginner. She?s a real find. Sign up early so you are not closed out. Don?t miss Jessica! more

SHOCKra: The Perfect Place for the Uncoordinated 3/1/2009

I took the 6 week beginner pole/kettlebell workshop with Vicky. I am not really that fit and am too uncoordinated to be good at sports, but I thought this class would be different and exciting, and I was right. I've tried other fitness classes before and usually lost interest pretty quickly (either because I got bored or because the instructor was more like a drill sargeant), so for me to get so into something says a lot. Vicky is a great instructor. She is not intimidating at all, but pushes you in a very positive and motivating way and gives you a lot of great pointers on how to nail down the moves. Pole dancing requires a lot of strength. For those of you who are as uncoordinated as I am, I highly recommend it because you can go at your own pace and it is so much fun (so addictive you'll find yourself wanting to practice spins on the subway poles or get your own pole for home like I did!). And if you just let yourself go and trust that the pole WILL hold you, you'll probably find you're not as uncoordinated as you thought you were. I think that even many people who are ""in shape"" could work up a sweat on the pole. Kettlebells were also challenging, you feel the burn EVERYWHERE, and Vicky keeps a very close eye on making sure you have good form (VERY important for your safety). Shockra management is also great, they are very helpful and quick to respond to your e-mails. They offer other fun classes like hiphop and bellydance, and if they are anything like the class I took, you can't go wrong if you go to Shockra! Pros: Small class size, instructors, non-intimidating more

i heart (absolute beginner) hip hop... 2/15/2009

...the instructor jessica, and everything shockra studio stands for! they deliver on the promise of ""providing an un-intimidating environment to those seeking health and happiness""... and make learning dance fun, even when it's pushing your limits of skill, rhythm, and cooridination. i enrolled in the absolute beginner hip hop workshop having NEVER taken a dance class, and (as much as i enjoy dancing to hip hop) having NEVER danced in daylight/sans cocktail. jessica made the whole experience comfortable, engaging, and fun and helped the handful of people in my class learn as a group, with individual pointers when needed -- which was never awkward since she is so bubbly and encouraging. she always makes sure we all are on the same page before moving on, and tailors the lesson accordingly, which i think is essential to a beginner class.\r \r my highest recommendation to shockra, ABHH, and jessica! Pros: amazing for beginners who want to build dance floor confidence! more

Amazing dance studio 2/15/2009

Today, I finished my first hip hop series with Jessica Hayden at Shockra Studio. This past six weeks has been the most exciting dance experience for me. Although I love music but I am never comfortable with my coordination, let alone dancing in front of other people embarrassing myself. However by the end of the series, with Jessica?s support and skill sets, I really started to believe that I can dance! Jessica is an amazing instructor. She is full of energy and life. Each week, I look forward to her class in such a supportive environment, believing that one day I can dance! I encourage anyone who is interested in learning how to dance to give this place a try. As a beginner, you can?t ask for a better environment to learn, to grow and explore new territories. I can almost guarantee that by the end, you will be more confident than ever! Jessica and other instructors in the studios are just amazing! I will recommend this place to anyone! more

What a great find! 2/11/2009

As part of an all day bachelorette party outing, a bunch of my friends and I took a pole dancing class at Shockra, which had been recommended to us. I noticed that the studio offers a variety of other dance classes and signed up for one of their hip hop workshops, which I'm currently partaking in. I honestly cant think of a single bad thing to say about the studio. The pricing is great for Manhattan, its in a great location, and the environment is very relaxed. The instructor/owner Jessica Hayden put everyone (of all dance levels, believe me, I didnt come in ready to be a hip hop video) at ease and breaks down the moves really well. Its so much fun that a person doesnt even realize that they're getting a workout as well. I'm having a great time and will definitely continue coming back after the workshop is over. more

SHOCKra is the place to go if you want dance, get fit, and have a great time! 2/2/2009

About a year ago, I was looking for adult Ballet classes in the city and came across SHOCKra and the amazing owner and instructor Jessica Hayden. The classes were great- both challenging and fun. I still dream about being a ballerina... \r Recently I joined the 6-week beginner pole workshop with Vicky and I absolutely love it!\r Its a real challenge for a girl who's never been to a gym in her life but this makes it even more satisfying.\r Vicky is super sweet and ever so patient. The classes are small which is a HUGE benefit since you can get personal attention from the instructor.\r \r I truly truly recommend!! Pros: Small groups, great instructors, beginer workshops more

Shockra is a Great Place for Dance Lessons 2/2/2009

I recommend Shockra Studio very highly. I'm taking group Hip Hop and Salsa classes there now. I was a complete beginner to dance lessons and Shockra has proven to be a great place to learn. The classes are perfectly paced for a beginner. The atmosphere is very friendly and I look forward to my classes each week. Jessica is an excellent teacher; she is upbeat and motivational which makes the lessons fun. more

Take a class! 2/2/2009

I have been going to Shockra Studio for a few months now and have taken open beginner pole classes, private samba classes, and now i am taking a samba/pole workshop with Keisha. I love all these classes and would highly recommend any class at Shockra Studio. Keisha is an amazing instructor! She can bring out anyone's inner dancer, no matter what your level! The studio itself is in a convenient location, it is clean, and everyone that works there has been friendly and helpful. Pros: great professional instructors, convenient place and times for classes more
